Hi again Rebecca,
Just another quick note: TBH's second wife was Maud E, not Maria E. They were married in London Sep quarter 1897 (only 6 months after Adela's death!!). St Geo, Hanover Square register Vol 1a Page 1141 refers. If you look on free BMD, there are two possible candidates, would you believe - Maud E C Humphery and Maud Evelyn C Slade. I'll leave you to pursue this one.
Regds again
Alan

Hi Rebecca
Have tried all my sources but can't offer any help on Adela's identity...can't even find evidence of her marriage to Thomas B.
About the only additional info I can provide (although I can't corroborate through other sources) is that Thomas was at school at Leamington College in 1851 at the age of 13. (see 1851 census)
Good luck with your research
Regds
Alan Higson

Hi -Thanks for the quick response. Easier to contact by email - laorrell@yahoo.com - as I live in Greece! Would like to know if you have any info on Joseph Higson, born c 1784 Atherton but living in Lowton - occupation silk weaver/agricultural labourer. I found a record of a marriage to Dinah Kay in Winwick in 1816. I'd also like to know if his daughter, Mary b.c.1824, is the Mary Higson who married Joseph Green in Lowton St Luke's in 1848....(think it is so, but have already barked up the wrong tree on this one, so feeling cautious!)
Lesley

My 4th Great Grandfather is a Thomas Higson (weaver) married to a Mary Higson. All the family at this time lived in the Rumworth/Deane Parish area of Bolton. Their children were miners including a Henry Higson my 3rd Great Grandfather who was born betwen 1817 and 1819.

I have reliable evidence of my ancestors from the period you are also searching. Please e-mail me at trevor.higson@tesco.net and I shall be delighted to send you details of my links to a Thomas and Mary Higson.
Thomas Higson in Middle Hulton before 1841

Can anyone help?
I am trying to firmly establish the family link between a Thomas Higson and his parents. He is a "Middle Hulton Higson". In 1841 a "55" year old weaver living in "Got Hill" with his wife Mary, (nee For(r)est), and his three youngest children. The two males Wright(bap.1820), and William (bap.1822), are miners in 1841.
This Thomas was possibly born 1777 - if so his father is James - but there are three possible James Higsons in the area.
He might also be a son of Thomas and Esther - christened in Deane 27/10/1782. He had 9 children starting with Maria in 1804; then James, Esther, Thomas, Mary, Henry, Wright, William and ending with Sarah in 1824.
Has anyone linked this Thomas with this set of children to a father called James, (and if so whic one!), or Thomas, (or alternatively tied the potential Thomas father of Thomas to a different set of children to those above and thus exclude him)? or does a later census for the area give a better check on his age?
JoeL

If anyone in this thread discovers a Mary Higson who married a James Ormrod- approx. 1840- please contact me. They were my g-g grandparents. Apparently they were both from families involved in Brick-making in Bolton. This Mary was born in Over Hulton and they are found in Cannon Street, Bolton on the 1851 census, with their children Oliver, John, Mary and Alice.

Ada Halstead/Higson, born Burnley 1877.

Hi There

Due to a technicality I am unable to respond to a message you posted on another message board (see below). Please see my HIGSONs and HALSTEADs message to you which I posted on the Ancestry.com HALSTEAD surname message board.

Please reply by posting to the surname board, not my email address.

Regards

Jonathan

"Seeking information about my grandmother Ada Halstead, born Burnley 1877. On her marriage cert her father's name is given as John Higson Halstead, however in subsequent censuses he is just John Higson, son of Matthew. I believe she may have been born before her parents' marriage, and that her mother's name was Ruth Halstead. She was later brought up by her maternal aunt Olive Atkinson nee Halstead and her husband James Atkinson, and her father remarried and moved to Yorkshire. If anyone has information about Ada and her family, I would love to hear it."

Re: Higson, Lancashire England

Ada Halstead was my grandmother. She was born in 1877 and I believe her mother was Ruth Halstead, who died aged 24. She is shown in the 1881 census living with her grandfather Matthew Higson and widowed father John Higson in Burnley, but at some point before the 1891 she was adopted by her late mother's sister Olive Atkinson and her husband James. I believe Ada was born before her parents married, and she kept her mother's maiden name. I understand that John Higson and his second wife and family moved to Yorkshire. Ada married my grandfather Alfred Fairey in Burnley when she was 19, and gave her father's name on the marriage certificate as John Higson Halstead, which confused me for some time! She had 2 children, Hilda and Fred, my father, and died in Hest Bank, Morecambe, in the early 1960s.

Please get in touch. I know some time has passed since you posted your message, but Ada's grandchildren would like to make contact with you and learn more about the Higson family history.

Regards,
Gill.

Benjamin Higson b. about 1800? in Bolton

According to family records, my ggg grandfather was Benjamin Higson, of Bolton, Lancashire born sometime around 1800. He married Margaret Lyon (dau. of James Lyon and Catherine Liptrot) and they moved to Pennsylvania around 1825. There they had three children, John , James and Catherine. In 1832 Benjamin was killed in a boating accident and Margaret moved back to Bolton with her three children. There she married a Mr. Hart and had four more children, Alfred, George, Eliza and Susanna. My gg grandfather, John Higson moved back to Pennsylvania in 1857.

I am looking for any information about Benjamin Higson and his family origins, and Margaret Lyon. There seems to be quite a bit of information about various Higson families in Bolton, though I see no specific mention of a Benjamin Higson. Is he perhaps a brother of one of the people mentioned here? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Do you have any Higson's who were born in Yorkshire but lived in Lancashire? My gg grandmother Elizabeth HIGSON was b. 1841 in Giggleswick Yorkshire. She married John Oldham SAVAGE in 1859 in Clitheroe Lancashire. They lived in Clitheroe, Ashton in Makerfield, Billinge and Hindley with their 6 children. I have found one piece of information which states Elizabeth's father was John Higson but cannot find any proof. I have also been able to find a Thomas Higson with a daughter Elizabeth being the right age. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Ann

Later the family branched to Hucknall in Nottinghamshire when the new mine was opened in 1860's . Any info about the earlier or indeed later connections would be interesting. Thanks
