Hildinger family Washtenaw Co., Michigan

I am looking for help on the Hildinger family of Washtenaw Co., Michigan. Bessie Hildinger was the daughter of Charles J. and Marion (Babcock) Hildinger. Bessie was born 3 Jul 1900 in Jackson Co., Michigan, in the twp of Napoleon.

On 30 March 1918 Bessie Hildinger married Alfred Douglas Graves, in Jackson, Jackson Co., Michigan. Alfred was born 26 Mar 1896 in Chesaning, Michigan, the son of Stephenson and Mary (Robbin) Graves. Alfred and Bessie had a son Alfred Graves on 17 Mar 1919, born Michigan, not sure where, and he graduated from Manchester High School in 1935. I was told that during high school Alfred Jr lived with the Sodt family headed by father George with a son Clifton who was the same age as Alfred jr. But he is not with them in the 1930 census.

In 1920 census Bessie Hildinger Graves and infant son Alfred G. Graves were living with her parents Charles and Marion Hildinger in Manchester Twp. Washtenaw Co., Beessie's husband Alfred Douglas Graves and father of her son Alfred was killed (non comnbat) in France while in the military during WW 1. Alfred Douglas Graves died 13 Jan 1919 when his son Alfred was only about 10 months old. There is a VA military tombstone for Alfred in Norvell Cemetery, Jackson Co., Michigan

I can't find Bessie and Alfred her son in 1930 census. Did Bessie Hildinger Graves re marry? Does anyone know if she did, what is her married name, who her husband was, is she still livnig, or deceased, if deceased, do you know when and where she is buried. Did she have other children???? Where was she and son Alfred in 1930???

Now I need to also know on Alfred Graves son of Bessie and Alfred. Alfred again was born 30 Mar 1919, he died 20 Aug 1983 while living in West Palm Beach, FL. Did Alfred Jr. have a family, a wife and children, does anyone know of any descendants???/

thanks

Karen Jenter
Washtenaw Co., Michigan

Laura Beard, William Oliver Beard, Anna Patricia Beard Crane

Hello Everyone!

I'm hoping this post will lead me to some answers that I have been searching for for quite some time!! My g g grandmother was Anna Patricia (possibly Tarthrina instead of Patricia) Beard. She was born approx 1874. She had a brother named William Oliver Beard (he went by Oliver, b approx 1870). I believe their mother was Laura Beard (maiden name unknown)and father was Franklin Beard. Oliver married Hattie E. and had 3 daughters: Bertha, Lucy Bell, and Maude Beard. He ran an ice cream shop/restraunt in Carthage, SD. His 3 daughters are believed to have returned down south where (it is believed) they were all originally from. Anna Beard married Jesse V. Crane. They had 5 children before her death in 1907 (Raymond, Franklin, Oliver, Ethel, and Baby Crane). Only 2 of the 5 children lived: 2 died of pneumonia and one was a still birth. The 2 that lived were Oliver Irvin Crane and Ethel Ann Crane. Anna had died when Oliver was 7 years old. He remembered that his grandmother had came to SD to take care of his mom when she became sick and stayed until she died. After Anna passed away and was buried, the grandmother (who we believe was Laura), left behind her son William Oliver Beard (the only living child she had remaing from what we can tell) and all 5 of her grandchildren and returned to her home. I do not know where her home was. I don't know if she remarried cause it seems odd to leave all her family behind to return to no one. Anyhow, what I know of Anna and William Oliver Beard's mom...........she had a 1st marriage to a minister (name unknown) that ended in divorce. He was abusive. They had no children. She then married Franklin Beard and had 2 (maybe 3 children). But Franklin became sick and she took him to the hot springs to see if that would help him recover. It didn't and he died at a young age. I found a census record from 1880 for Dade Co, MO with a Laura Beard mentioned as a window with 2 children: Anna and Oliver. I believe this to be my family. The census record is for the same county that later shows record of Anna marrying Jesse V. Crane.

The problem I have is I can not find any record of Laura after 1880. I know she was alive in 1907 when Anna passed away. I don't know if she remarried and if she did, who? Did she have more children? Where was her 1st marriage and to who? What was her maiden name? I've looked at census records that William Oliver Beard (her son) had filled out over the years in SD........and every census record every 10 years, the place of birth for his mother changes! He listed 3 different states on each of the 3 census records I looked at. The 3 states were: Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio. The census record I found for 1880 in Dade Co, MO that she filled out (if this is the right woman with the 2 kids), put her birth place as Illinois.

If you have any information that can help me locate Franklin Beard's line, who Laura was and her line, or any information on the children of William Oliver Beard it would be so appreciated!!!!!!!!

Laura?? (B: approx 1840)

Children:

Anna P. Beard (Jesse V. Crane)(B approx 1874)
William O. Beard (Hattie E.)(B approx 1870)

Anna and Jesse Children:

Oliver Irvin Crane
Ethel Anne Crane

William O. Beard & Hattie E Children:

Bertha (B approx 1902)
Lucy Bell (B approx 1893)
Maude (or Maudie Y) (B approx 1896)

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Major William H. Tunner, headof the newly created Air Transport Command (ATC), saw most of his qualified pilots transferred to combat positions. New military aircraft, fresh off the assembly line, were sittting on runways without pilots to fly them to military bases and transport ships where they were needed.
Nancy Love, Leader of the WAFS and later, Executive Director of the WASP in the ATC
In May of 1940, twenty-six year old Nancy Harkness Love wrote general Bob Olds, Major Tunner's superior, with a plan to use women pilots to ferry planes in the ATC. At first the idea of using women pilots was dismissed but in 1942, as the shortage of women pilots became acute, General Olds decided the time was right to put Love's plan into action. Most of his colleges, including Major Tunner, were skeptical or flatly believed that women were incapable of flying military aircraft.
In September of 1942, Nancy Love was appointed as the director of the Women's Auxiliary Flying Squadron (WAFS) under Major Tunner and given a chance to prove the skeptics wrong. Nancy initially sent telegrams out to eighty-three of America's best women pilots recruiting them as civilian pilots serving in the Ferry Command. The women had to be between twenty-one and thirty-five, have logged at least 500 hours in the air, hold a commercial license, a 200-horsepower engine rating, and have recent cross-country flying experience. Twenty-seven women met these rigorous standards and answered the call to serve their country during wartime.
WAFS Betty Gillies seated in the cockpit of a PT-19. Nancy Love standing on the wing.
WAFS Evelyn Sharp stepping into the cockpit of a pursuit aircraft These twenty-eight women, "The Originals" as they would come to call themselves, began ferrying light aircraft and primary trainers such as Stearmans and PT-19 Fairchilds. They quickly went on to check-out in larger aircraft including pursuit planes such as the P-38 and P-51. The WAFS merged with Jackie Cochran's program, the Womens Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) in 1943 to become the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Collectively these women surpassed all expectations and proved that women could fly military aircraft with as much sill and competency as their male counterparts.
WASP History
*************************************************
http://www.twu.edu/wasp/class_43w4.htm
This was her class
TWU Home > Library > Archival Collection
Class 43-W-4
Women Airforce Service Pilots General Information
Graduated: 112 Graduation Date: August 7, 1943
Entered Training: 151 Band: Midland AAF Band
Principal Speaker:
Maj.
Hi Lori,
I am taking a chance your email is still the same. I have 2 cemetery books from Oak Grove in Manchester. My great grandfather Ernest Christian Jenter started the funeral home here in 1884. It continued in our family until 1990 when my dad retired and sold it.

I found some Hildinger entries in the books. These books go to the mid 1920's so there are probably more buried in the cemetery here.

If I remember correctly one of our first pastors at our church Emanuel UCC in Manchester was a Hildinger.

I am German ancestry and am related to just about every other German in Washtenaw Co. I have probably30,000 or moire in my family tree.

Let me know if you would like the info I have from the cemetery books. I can scan it for you.

Karen Jenter
Manchester

Hildingers/Indiana

Hi Karen! Because the name Hildinger was not a common name back in the 1800's, I am assuming that all the Hildingers in Indiana were related one way or another. My GR/GR/
Grandfather, Wilhelm Casper Hildinger, was born 03 June 1828 in Wiesbaden,Wurtemburg,
Germany.I do not know when he immigrated to the USA,but that can be researched out of Germany and I hope to do that in the near future. In the meantime, your family may be connected to mine. I do not know if Wilhem Casper Hildinger had any siblings, or if his parents came with him from Germany. He and Catherine Miles had the 3 daughters and a son , John Ulysses. If your family came from mine, then John would be the one they came from to carry the Hildinger name. The problem is that the records I have show John had one child, a daughter, named Stella b 1910
d 1922. So this goes back to possible brothers ,cousins, or uncles of my Wilhelm,
unless I can come up with other children that John may have had. Hope there is a connection with us somewhere. Thanks again.
Email is: ranjstew@home.com

Hi Karen! Thanks for your new reply on 9/23/00. I wish we could link up our Hildingers. Because your Thomas Martin Hildinger also immigrated from Wurtemberg,
Germany, there is a possibility that he is a relative to my William(Wilhelm) Casper, Hildinger even though they lived in different
states! Looking at an Atlas of the states, I went to Ohio and found Hocking CO which is in the middle southern part of the state,s/e
of Columbus. Now, it is possible that your Thomas moved from Indiana to Ohio or my
William Casper moved from Ohio to Indiana. As
far as the last name spelling being Heldinger
instead of Hildinger, you will find many document from the 1700's 1800's mispelling
a lot of names. I have another name I was researching which was Isaac Miles and his Marriage record had his name spelled Miller!
Its a good thing that I knew his wifes name
or I might have dismissed that document. I think the reason was that our families came from other countries and they had heavy accents in their dialects and the compilers of records spelled the names as they heard them! Anyway, I feel that my William Casper Hildinger did not come over to this country alone. Most immigrants came with family or
families of their wives or husbands. On his death certificate,it does not show his parents names or anything new .
He died 23 Feb 1898 in Blairsville, Posey CO
Indiana. He was a Civil War Veteran and is buried with his brother in law, another Civil War Veteran, somewhere nearby. I hope we can continue to dig until we find something to give us a clue to their past from Germany.
keep in touch, Jean Stewart,e-mail is
ranjstew@home.com

I love the Internet ,don't you? anyway , I hope your right about Thomas William Casper being half brothers, because then we can both start filling in the blanks. Like I said before, there was not much known on William Caspers background and this may be our break! thanks again, Keep me posted as to what you find out.

Hi Karen! I hope the 1860 Ohio census can give us some clues. I'm really excited about some new info about our Hildingers coming out now. I'm so glad I started this Hildinger message board, but if I hadn't, you said you were ready to start one also,so either way ,we are going to get to the bottom of the mystery of the Hildingers and their families. Good luck at the courthouse!I hope it is worthwhile and full of good stuff. I will be happy to pay for any fees, such as printing, postage etc!!! after all, we are related if you can find my Wilhelm Casper Hildinger on the census with other members of his family. Talk at ya later,Jean

Hello Joseph! You want to know what this Web site is about? with a last name of Hildinger, you should be able to figure it out.My GR/GR/Grandparents were Wilhelm Casper Hildinger and Catherine Miles. they were married in 1857 in Indiana. The other person responding to this message board is Karen Wise whose ancestors were Tobis Martin Hildinger and Caroline Bloom who lived in Hocking Co. Ohio. I started this message board to link anyone who is related to the Hildinger family who came from Germany.Because you have carried the same last name, perhaps you can help us out with any information you might have on your family and we can try to connect and fill in the blanks of our family trees.Thats what this Message board is about! Hope to hear from you again with hopefully some information or questions to contribute. Thanks, Jean Stewart

Also, the Casper that you said was Tobias's brother, are you saying that is not my Casper?
I did not know that Wiesbaden was linked to Prussia. I'm going to go to the site again in the next couple days and see if I can try to retrieve something again, but I doubt if I can.
Hi Karen, A Web Site would be good, especially if you have names, dates etc. that have been verified. That way , you might get more info coming in from other Hildingers.
You asked me where in Ohio that Casper lived, I have no proof that he lived in Ohio, I only got that info from you a while back when you said that he was on the Ohio Census for 1860. When he emmigrated to the US, I have no idea if he went directly to Indiana where he got married and raised his family. I don't even know what year he emmigrated but I'm working on that. Thanks for getting the films, are you going to a Family History center in your town to view them?
Karen, wish you were here on this past Sunday, Lori Gannon & her husband were here in MI for a family wedding and took the time to come up and see me. Lori brought her Hildinger info for her family and I made copies of some things, but so far, we can't see a link yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. We didn't have much time to talk as they had to get going but I had a great time, they are wonderful !
Talk at ya later
Jean

Dear Marc Speelmon,

Today I started to research the line of Herbert Frederick Baral, my father-in-law. From his certificate of birth I see that he was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on 1 Oct, 1903 to Henry Baral and Wilhelmina Kammeyer (both born in Indiana). Through Ancestry.com, Indiana Marriages, 1895-1920, I learned that Henry Baral married Minnie Kammeyer on 28 Sep 1902, in Allen County.

Johanna Hildinger and Johan Jacob Baral seem to fit remarkably well as possible parents for Henry Baral. Do you have a record of their children? I would appreciate any information you can share.

Thank you.
Susan
Hildingers from Michigan

Hello,
I am from one of the Hildinger families of Michigan. You didn't mention your Grandfathers name, but we don't have a Lucille or Florence that I know of -- but that is where this starts to get fun.
I have a lot of info to share on Johann Georg, Johann Frederick, Anna Maria and others in the family from Wurttemberg that came to this country in the mid 1800's.
Email me direct at lorigannon@oregontrail.net. We have German Hildingers coming over this fall for a visit who researched the family there.
My line Johann Georg lived in Manchester (near Ann Arbor), starting around 1860, had ten children and we can't find some of them. I think we can help each other a lot.
Lori

Hildingers Everywhere

Hi,
How long has this Hildinger Board been going. Unfortunately, I do my genealogy in streaks -- and sometime I don't check all names for message boards. Rats!! I feel like I am way behind.
I have been working on finding the rest of the Hildinger family that emmigrated from Wurttemberg in the mid 1800's. Our family is from the line of Johann Georg (Carolina Klenk) who came to America in the 1850's - had 10 kids and lived near Ann Arbor, MI. I know that three brothers and a sister came over to the US from that family.
We are hosting the Hildinger researchers from Germany this fall for their first trip to America. Hope to orchestrate a gathering of sorts. Anyone interested -- please contact me.
Also would like info from all of you with your Hildinger branches. I know there were many families of Hildinger/Hitlinger/Hutlinger that started from the same family in Germany.
I am in Oregon now but have family in Michigan and that is where we will gather this fall. Any and all inquiries, help and info is appreciated.
Lori Gannon, lorigannon@oregontrail.net

Hi Karen,
Glad you responded. I had tried to reach you when I wrote to Jean Stewartl, but I was using your old address, I guess.
Can I infer that you are currently in Oklahoma? That is where your reference to the family line stops. The name Tobias/Thomas doesn't mean anything to me at this time, but I don't have any of the siblings for my GrGrGrandfather listed by name. I only know there were some.
Our researchers from Germany are coming over this fall and I would like to have info on all the family lines that emigrated. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you snail-mail me a copy of your Hildinger info?
Thanks! Lori

I was thinking he had a couple of other sisters as well, but I'm not sure. William A passed away January, 1976; his wife Lois (Brudi) passed away last October. He had two sons: Louis W. and William A. Louis is my father. If you're still searching for info (I don't know how much I can help) please drop me an email. Best Regards.

Hi Jean! Did you ever find your Caspar Hildinger?

I rented the Family Register from Stuttgart for Weil im Dorf, and sure enough the whole family was listed including Thomas's parents and siblings. His name turned out to be Tobias Gottlob Hildinger. Since the families are listed alphabetcal it was a snap.

Hope everything is okay.
Hi Jean! There was a Casper Hildinger in Fairfield Co. Ohio, but it turned out to be Thomas's brother.

I did look into some things for you at the LDS site. Turns out, and maybe you knew this already, Wiesbaden info is linked to Prussia. There are films I can order for you and would be more than happy to do it. I want to help you as much as I can, because I know how frustrating it can be. My Hildingers were from Weil im Dorf, the films were easy to read although I cant write or speak a word of German. Names are pretty easy to figure out. I am going to LDS tomorrow, let me help PLEASE.

Another thing, Hildingers are on the 1860 Ohio census. Ill check for the name William hildinger and see what I come up with, unless you have a better suggestion.

Karen

The email address is new as of Jan. 2002 and I know I haven't contacted everyone I have corresponded with previously so hope this reminder will suffice.
Erich Hildinger of Germany sent me info that I have put into my files but am not sure I have it all yet. Am willing to share what I have, most of which, unfortunately, is not documented properly. (I was young and didn't understand the need back then.) Reading the recent postings has re-whet the appetite and I will definitely keep unpacking.
Keep digging! Lori
