Thanks for so much new Hiler family info, Diane. But it seems like the more I learn the more questions I find. The marriage date for Martin Hiler and Margaret VanDeusen in 1811 makes my original idea that her name was Elizabeth VanDeusen b. 1785/6 could be wrong for that date. I am wondering if Martin may have married two VanDeusen sisters! One older and one younger. You see, I do not have the names of all of Matthew's first family. The 1790 and 1800 census records show more children than I have found names for. Do you have any info about other Hiler families living in Brant Co, Ontario? I have come across Hilers born at Paris, Dumfries Twp, Ontario that I really feel must be related to my family since the VanDeusens lived in that very place in Ontario. But I need to fit them into place and haven't been able to yet.
Betty Brassington

Just saw these great messages for the first time! Get no reminders!

Since I wrote a couple of years ago, I have the good fortune of getting John M. Hiler's will, and his third wife, Margaret's will. They do not name all children, but most. Below are transcriptions. I was also in Washington DC last month and got copy of Martin Hiler's (son of John M.) War of 1812 pension application. Pension was denied because he served less than 60 days. On the application he stated: "wife's name was Miss Margaret Van Deusen, married at Phelps Town, Ontario Co, N.Y 25th December 1811."

photocopy of will from LDS film 1004287, Monroe Co, NY wills, v. 3, 1841 - 1846, transcribed as follows:
The last will and Testament of John M. Hiler of the town of Penfield in the County of Monroe and State of New York knowing the uncertainty of Life, and being of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament revoking all others in manner and form following that is today -
First, My will is that my wife shall have the use of the one third of all my real estate for and during her natural life, which is hereby considered to be her dower of in and to all my Lands and Tenements and is hereby given her as and for her right of dower of in and to my lands aforesaid and is to be in satisfaction of her dower; And I also give and bequeath unto her all her wearing apparel and one bed and bedding for the same, such as she shall choose out of beds and bedding to have and to hold the same to her absolutely.
I give and bequeath unto my sons Daniel Hiler five hundred dollars - Silas Hiler three hundred dollars, to my daughter Melissa one hundred dollars, to my grandson Monroe Miller fifty dollars to be paid by my sons James Hiler and George Hiler out of the real Estate hereinafter devised to them in five equal annual payments with interest thereon which said several legacies are hereby declared to be a lien upon the real estate hereinafter divised to my sons James and George HIler -
I give and bequeath unto my sons James Hiler and George Hiler all my real Estate subject to the devise to my wife Margaret Hiler and the Legacies to Daniel Hiler, Silas Hiler, Malissa Hiler and my grandson Monroe Miller - I also give to my sons James and George one span of horses, one set of harness and a two horse wagon, and to my son George one cow -
I give all the rest and residue of my Estate to my daughters share and share alike - I hereby appoint William Wood and Samuel Miller my executors of this my Last will and Testament
In witness whereof I have thereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three. John M. Hiler
Signed, Sealed etc... E. B. Wheeler, James Lane of City of Rochester, Monroe County

“
Copy of will viewed on LDS film 1,004,291, Probate records of Monroe Co, NY, Wills v. 7, and transcribed by me as follows:
The last will and testament of Margaret Hiler. I Margret Hiler considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory blessed be God for the same do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say -
First - I give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Sally the sum of thirty dollars.
Second, I give and bequeath to my daughter Hannah one hundred dollars.
Third, I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Ann fifty dollars.
Fourth and lastly I give and bequeath to my youngest daughter Melissa Ann all the rest - residue and remainder of my estate - both real and personal together with all the goods and chattels of whatsoever name or kind to have and to hold the same forever and further more all such legacies or sums of money. I will and order to be paid to the said respective legatees within two years after my decease.
I also hereby appoint George Burrow sole executor to this my last will and testament thereby revoking all former will by me made.
In witness thereof i have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourteenth (14) day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven. Margaret Hiler x her mark

Not all 24 children were named in the wills; some probably died before then. Many are still living in 1850, so the census records give us some information about them. It is also not certain that there were 24 children. This information came from my great grandfather, who was about 90 years old when he gave the information.

I still need the names of the first two wives. From the above and other sources I have been able to identify the definite and possible children of John Martin Hiler of New Jersey; went to NY, back to NJ, and then back to NY:

From first two unknown wives:
Samuel ?
Jacob 10 Apr 1784
Martin @ 1789
William @ 1790
Eleazer @ 1790 New Jersey
David @ 1794 NJ
Abram @ 1795
Rachel @ 1797 NJ

By Margaret Onstrot, all children born in NY (New Jersey marriage records for Morris County show marriages of Unstead, Onsted, Onstot, Onstott, Onstet. I have also seen her name spelled Ouisted.)

Peter @1804
Sarah @1806
Phoebe @1809
Silas @1810
Abigail @1811
Daniel @1814
James @1815
Mary Ann @1817
Hannah 26 Mar 1818
George Washington 21 Apr 1822
Melissa abt 1827

Hope this information helps lots of Hiler researchers!
Looking for information about William Hyler/Hiler (b: 1805 in NC) who married Lucinda (b 1806 in SC). I know of one daughter, Nancy. She married Agrippa Hopkins. It has been said that William died Nov 14, 1878 in Union Co., MS and is buried in Beacon Hill Cemetery. I find this cemetery in Arkansas, not MS.
Any info about this branch of the Hyler/Hiler's would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about David Hiler except that my maternal grandfather Leslie Long lived with him and his wife and kids for awhile. Check the 1930 census in Iowa, benton county. It is very hard to read and when someone typed the list up (friends and family) you will see they typed the last name as Helen. I have been checking this all to find information about my paternal grandfather. I believe he was a cousin or brother of David's wife Anna Katherine Brown. I see your name on records that were sent to me by a lady who is researching the Long family. It shows your name and family on the list. She shows David Hiler as being born in 1896 and died in 1974.

Thank you very much! I still can't find a connection between my William "C" Hiler and his possible parent John Thomas Hiler (b. 1807) and Martha Vaughn (b.1813) - both of Pittsylvania. Do you have any info that John Thomas may have been a child of your Joseph Hiler, son to your Sarah East and William ? I am certain my William has a "C" middle initial, from military and widows pension records, but I am just stumped at his parents. My best guess is John Thomas and Martha noted above - but no evidence to support it. It's like I am missing one generation to make the connection. Very frustrating. I appreciate your help though !
Sincerely, Donna

Mary Caroline or Mary A. Hiler md. Lewis M. Thompson 1854 Marshall Co., MS.

I am looking for any information on the woman who was the first wife of Lewis Thompson whose household I found in Tishomingo Co., MS., in 1860. It appeared as follows:
#1913-1913

Thompson, Lewis 28 TN
Mary A. 21 AL
Willialm V. 5 MS
James F. 3 AR
Rebecca 1 AR

I found a marriage record for Lewis M. Thompson to Mary Caroline Hiler in neighboring Marshall Co., MS., dated 3 Jul 1854. I believe this is the marriage record for this couple above.

Lewis was living in Tishomingo Co., in 1850 in the home of his likely parents: John and Mary Thompson. He was 18 yrs old at this time. One other person was in the home: Isaac East, age 25, a grocery keeper, born in AL.
I don't know if this man had any relation to the family or not.

The son of Lewis and Mary (Hiler) is the man who I believe later married my gg.grandmother "Nancy Ann Gist-Butler". They were in Madison Co., TN., by 1900 and named their only son together, "Lewis S. Thompson".

Mary Hiler-Thompson appears to have died bwt. .1860 and Aug. 1863, as I found a marriage between Lewis Thompson and Rebecca Sellars dated 13 Aug. 1863 in neighoring Alcorn Co. (actually was a part of Tishomingo Co., until 1870).
I then found Lewis and Rebecca along with several children living in Decatur Co., TN., by 1870. Lewis appears to have died bwt. 1870-1880 as I found "Becky Thompson" and their youngest daughter "Lucyan" (shown in 1870 as Lucy A) living as a widow in Madison Co., TN. in 1880.
I think James F., (son of Lewis and Mary Hiler) Thompson is living in Hardin Co., in 1880, but am not certain this is the correct James F. Thompson. His future wife 'Nancy Ann" is found living in Hardin Co., in 1880 and both are married to one another and living in Madison Co., by 1900. I suspect James F., may have moved his new family to Madison Co., to be near his step-mother and half-sister or else was left her land perhaps when she died. I'm not yet however certain when Rebecca "Becky" died.

Trying to connect the dots and also would like to know more about this Mary Hiler/Hiller/Hillyer. Family legend is that the children of James F. Thompson were part Indian and several of his children looked it. I don't yet know if it came down in his Thompson/Hiler family or that of his wife Nancy Ann's.

Thanks,
Christi

Martha A. Hiler Lipford - Pittsylvania/North Carolina

John Daniel Lipford married Martha Ann Hiler. She was born Sept 24, 1846 in Pittsylvania, VA. Here is her obituary naming children from March 1924. - Donna

The Bee (Danville, Virginia) >
1924 > March > 25 page 1/14
Another Fatal Burning Reported From Ruffin, N.C.

News of another fatal burning reached here last night when it became known that Mrs. J.D. Lipford, an aged woman of the Ruffin, N.C., community perished early Saturday morning from injuries sustained at her home. None was with her at the time she caught fire but it is believed that she was striken with paralysis and fell against a stove, her clothes ignited in that way. The tragic accident took place on Friday morning at 11:30 o'clock and she died early the next day.

Her husband and son did all they could to extinguish the flames and sustained painful burns of their hands in their efforts to save her. She lived for fourteen hours afterward but was unconscious most of that time, but apparently not suffering. Deceased was 77 years and almost six months old. About nine years ago she suffered a stroke of paralyziz from which she had never fully recovered and since then has sustained several light seizures. For the last three years her vitality has so waned that she was practically an invalid.

Her husband, J.P. Lipford; two sons, C.A. Lipford of Mt. Cross, and D.L. Lipford of Mayfield, N.C., and two daughters, Mrs. L.I. King of Bachelors Hall, Va and Mrs. Jettie Ashworth, of Mayfield, N.C. survive. She has 28 grandchildren and 21 great-grand-children.

The body of the aged lady was buried in the family buriel ground near Bachelor's Hall. Rev. R.W.
I am very interested in your Hiler line. I have an Eleazer Hiler B.1791 in NJ D. 04-May-1873 in Kent Co, Grand Rapids, MI. He was married to a Harriet Castle Sturdevant. I just started on my Hyler/Hiler genealogy again. My grandparents Nora and Joseph Mitchell Hyler visited relatives in Ionia, Mi where I found Eleazer Hiler my third great grandfather. His daughter Phobe Louisa Hiler married my Nathaniel Mitchell Hyler. Grandmother insisted they were NOT RELATED Yes I have been confused between Hyler and Hiler. Please put me on your emails. I had Eleasers father as Nicholas Hyler B. 06-Sep-1769 from a Great Aunt but she wasn't sure. Also looking for info on James HYLER b 1795 I know I have more info on other Hilers as I have a whole file trying to piece together. If you have any information please put here or email me. Tweety91246@sbcglobal.net Thank you Sandy Hyler Wagar
I'm sorry, I do not know where they may be buried. There is an old cemetery located just outside of Briartown OK in which Letha and J. B. Hiler are buried. Their names are inscribed on old stones--actually scatched into the surface by a Hiler son. Another cemetery which another grandfather was buried was relocated due to the location of a lake. Supposedly, most graves were moved and duly marked--however, some graves did not have official headstones therefore some stones weren't moved with the re-interment. The Army Corp of Engineers maintains the records of the moved cemeteries and a library in Stigler (I think) has a copy of those records. The sad fact is--if the family didn't maintain some sort of record of location--it may be impossible to locate the graves if they were not marked with a durable head stone. Good luck in your search.

Martin Hiler was the son of John M. Hiler. John was born about 1760 in NJ and died 1843 at Penfield Twp, Monroe Co, NY. John had nearly 18 children according to the listings here on this site and probably had at least two wives. One of his sons was Martin Hiler (1789-1873) who married one of the daughters of my ancestor, Mathew VanDeusen. I am trying to learn more about Martin and his wife and also about the larger John M. Hiler family.
There have been two excellent lineages submitted to Ancestry about the John M. Hiler family but the online addresses of the submitters have gone out and no responses come back.
Are there any other descendants of John M. Hiler here? Would surely like to hear from them.

I do not have proof as to when Sally Hiler died. My proposal as to date of death is based merely on family member's remembrance (the daughter of Grover Cleveland Hiler who also lived with her grandmother for a time). I did locate the census record as cited in previous message that had Sally's children living with her mother, Letha Hiler, which supported the conjecture that Sally may have been deceased and that her mother was caring for her children. I have not heard any family story that Sally left her children with her mother then left the state. Please cite the census in which you have located Sally with James. Thanks.

Welcome aboard. I have records that show Martha's maiden name was Tiffin - not Flippin. DO you have any information on Joseph Hiler - your Thomas A Hiler's father? I am looking for a copy of his will that was proved 21 Nov 1853 lists the following children: Peggy, Nancy, Martha, William, Susan Gibbs (w/o John) & John. No wife was mentioned.

If you'd like - let me know and I can send you the info on Martha Tiffin. Thanks, Donna

Married a lady by the name of Alice J Young ( MAIDEN NAME) she was married to a Townsend before Hiler. Cyrus and Alice lived in Douglas Co Superior Wisconin in the 1900's. I believe that they both are buried in Superior Wisconsin. One child that I know of a Pearl Hiler who died March 9 , 1900 is Superior Wiscoson. Any info would be great. Thanks

Re: Cyrus Hiler

Cyrus Hiler (born Sep 1853, per 1900 census) was a son of Conrad Hiler and Ann Jennette Baily. His father Conrad was born in New York 19 Oct 1826 and died in Chippewa Co, Wisconsin 2 December 1898. His mother Ann was born in New York about 1832. In 1860, Conrad and Ann were living in Parma, Monroe Co, New York, which is probably where he was born. In 1870 they were living in Owosso, Shiawassee Co, Michigan, and in 1880 Conrad (but not Ann) was living in Clam Lake, Wexford Co, Michigan with two of his sons, George and Chester. Meanwhile, in 1880, Cyrus was living in Granite Falls, Minnesota and in 1889-90, he was living in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin (per Eau Claire directory), occupation listed as brakeman. Cyrus had a son, Roy Leonard Hiler, born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin 15 October 1890, who changed the spelling of his last name to Hiller and died in Dayton, Ohio 28 Dec 1975.

I had surmised that the Alice J. Townsend enumerated with Cyrus in 1880 was the Alice Hiler of 1900, despite an inconsistency in place of birth. I did not know her maiden name was Young. Do you know the names of her parents?

Your recent message in reply to my query of 2005 was much appreciated because the automatic reminder system here let me know that there were two messages to my four year old query. Please read my reply to my recent message from Diane and some of the information I know about John M. Hiler may be some help to you. According to Diane's message, John M. Hiler, born in NJ, had 24 children with 3 wives so there is a probable William. I will put the names of these children here as I got them from this Hiler surname site but, as you can see, I did not find all 24 of them. Probably most of the missing ones were daughters whose married names made them hard to find.
The children: 1. Jacob abt 1782, 2. MARTIN abt 1789, 3. Eleazor 1791, 4. John 1792, 5. (perhaps) Abram 1795 6. David 1794, 7. Rachel 1797, 8.Peter 1804, 9. William ? by 1810, 10. Silas 1812, 11. Daniel 1814, 13. James 1815,
14. Hannah 1818, 15. George 1822, 16. Melissa 1827. I got these names from this Hiler surname site and have put birthyears as near as I could find them but may not be right. My interest is with son, MARTIN HILER who married into my VanDeusen family while living at Phelps, NY. I found many of the other Hiler families in records found online from Penfield, NY and some even in Ashtabula Co, OH.
Betty Brassington

No, Diane, you are the first reply to my query but thank goodness for the automatic reminder about replies -- however, your reply is now two years old and your reply came two years after posted so for some reason I didn't find your message until now! This is why these reminders are so very important -- I got a reminder of the second reply recently. We go on to other family research and forget that we posted a query. The name of Martin VanDeusen's daughter is either Elizabeth or Mary (not definitely known since I have not been able to find birth, marriage or death records that gives the first name but I strongly believe that she is Elizabeth, dau of Matthew and Lucretia Bortle VanDeusen, baptized 15 Jan 1786 at Claverack Church, Columbia Co, NY.) The name "Mary" comes from a descendant. My connection to the family is Lucretia VanDeusen Evans, another daughter of Matthew and Lucretia. Elizabeth/Mary VanDeusen married Martin Hiler at Phelps, NY and at least two of their children were born there. The family moved to Burford, Ontario, Canada after 1820 when the VanDeusen family went there and probably she died there but her husband, Martin Hiler came in his old age to be with his son, Walter in Kent Co, Michigan and died there 16 Feb 1873 and is buried at the Bailey Cemetery at Vergennes Twp. Two of their children (Walter Hiler 1815-1901) and Elizabeth Hiler Mowatt 1808-1863) settled in Kent Co, Michigan and a daughter, Elinor (Hiler) Lown (1815-1900) settled in St. Clair Co, Michigan. She was the wife of Samuel Lown. I will be glad to have your information about the 3 marriages and 24 children of John M. Hiler. I am sure you already know that he last lived in Phelps, Ontario Co, NY. I am now in the process of going back into my four year old notebooks about the Hiler family and will certainly get back to you after I get the information back in mind again. My branch of this family came into Michigan early. I will post info again about them.
Betty Brassington

Hi Valerie! i told you i'd be in Toledo OH at their new library soon and look up anything they had in Brown Co on the Hiler/Little connection.

First off i found a will for George Little written 12 Nov 1844, probated 15 Apr. 1845 - he names his heirs as:  Wife:  Mary;
daughter: Eliza HILER (!) ; son: Henry; heirs of his deceased daughter Katharine Burt; and grandson: Wm. Harrison Little.

so we know from this will that Eliza Little's parents' names were George & Mary Little!

in the marriage listings they had :

Jacob Highler married Eliza Little 14th Dec. 1827 with her father , George Little, present at the ceremony.

Henry Little [eliza's brother] married Abigail Mann on May 1st, 1828 with both fathers present.

Wm. H. Little [the grandson named in the will] married
Lydia Fight on 11 May 1846.

there were more people with the last name of Little, but i couldn't connect them to yours. there was not a whole lot on Brown Co available either - i was sort of disappointed, but i hope this helps you some? -charlotte

I noted that your Hiler family lived in Henry Co VA. A short distance to the south, in Stokes Co NC, was the Asa East (Sr) family in the pre-1830 years. Asa's daughter Sarah married William James Hiler and moved to Simpson Co KY then to IL, then to LIncoln Co MO by the mid-1840s. William & Sarah were born in the 1790s, he in VA and she in Stokes Co NC. Details can be found at http://home.comcast.net/~eazier1/East/index.htm
New to the board! Joseph Hiler and Martha Flippin

Hello everyone! I am new to the board and, in fact, new to the whole genealogy field. I live in Alleghany County, VA and my relatves came to this area in the late 1800's. I have found my way back thru my line to include my grandfather, Charlie H. Hyler, my G Grandfather, Thomas Jackson Hiler, my G2GF, Thomas A. Hiler, (it looks like we changed the spelling of our name when we arrived here in Alleghany County) and I have some basic info on a couple of additional generations back to Joseph Hiler and Martha Flippin. But, as many of you have noted here: we seem to have been fond of using the same names over and over thru the years. I would like to correspond with anyone who might be able to give me some help/additional info. ... and, naturaly, I am willing to share any info I have with you!

Monte

My grandfather had a brother John. I have traced my family back to pre rev war.
Four generations back their was a John Hiler listed on the rev war records however he was from Lancaster County PA his father William came from New York. Do you know if Martin had a brother named William? The birth date of your John could make him Williams father and Johns brother.
