Dear James,
Over the last two months I have been working on another Hilferty line and have been corresponding with Anne Marie (Hilferty) Connelly about her Hilferty ancestors. This ancestral family is noted for several generations of John Francis Hilferty men being the head of household. The earliest of this line that I currently have identified is a John Hilferty married to a Catherine and records four of their children living in the 1900 U.S. Census of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The children are Mary (b. April 1876), Anna (b. October 1879), John (b. October 1882) and James (b. July 1884). According to this record John and Catharine immigrated from Ireland in 1870 and Catharine is recorded as having 12 children of which 6 were still living in 1900.
The interesting part of this census record is that the child James is shown to have been born in July of 1884, the same as you listed James B. Hilferty. Your James B. Hilferty died in 1918 and consequently had a foreshortened adult life and as I pointed out in my message on May 22, 2001 his widow and children were living with his wife's sister's family in the 1920 U.S. Census.
The grandfather of Anne Marie (Hilferty) was John (b. October 1882) the brother of James(b. July 1884) and he likewise had a foreshortened adult life having been killed in a train accident in about 1914. John's family is found in the 1920 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania census as a widow and children living with her sister also. What a tragic unexpected coincidence!
I am trying to prove that the James Hilferty (b. July 1884) to John Hilferty and Catharine is the same as James B. Hilferty, your ancestor, but, it will take some time I suspect. One possible way to prove it is if the application for marriage record of both John and James B. record the same parents thus making them brothers. We shall see.
Please let me hear from you.
