Hello Nancy (Hilferty) Buggey

There is a Hilferty in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who may be your ancestors. The 1910 census appears to record this family at it's most complete stage showing the mother, Elizabeth, to have had 10 children with 8 still alive in 1910. The family consists of the father, William @ 54 years, the mother, Elizabeth @ 44 years, and the children, Daniel @ 19 years, William J. @ 17 years, James T. @ 14 years, Hugh B. @ 13 years, Edward @ 11 years, Elizabeth @ 9 years, Francis @ 7 years and Mary @ 2 years. All of the children were recorded as being born in Pennsylvania with the father William being born in Ireland and the mother also being born in Ireland. William is recorded as immigrating in 1892 and Elizabeth in 1887. William and Elizabeth are recorded as being married 20 years in the 1910 census. In the 1900 census there is a John Hilferty @ 50 years old living in the household who is recorded as the brother of William, the father. In the 1920 census Daniel, the oldest child is recorded as being married to a Margaret. They have no children as yet. There are several Hilferty/Helferty families which have children by the name of Daniel and Hugh but, I have only one family which has a Francis along with a Daniel and Hugh. While this family is recorded in Philadelphia the boys, Daniel, Hugh and Francis could have easily established their own households in Delaware County after 1920 because Delaware County is adjacent to Philadelphia to the West.

There is a good possibility that William and Elizabeth are your great grandparents if Francis is your grandfather. I only have two other Francis Hilfertys in my data base and neither has a Daniel or Hugh as a brother. According to these census records Francis would have been born about 1903.

I cannot add anything further because censuses later than 1920 have not been released for public use and I have had no previous contact with anyone descended from this family which could have expanded the information about this family beyond 1920.

I am Clifford W. Holforty, the Compiling Editor of the Halferty, Helferty and Hilferty genealogy. I have been researching these families for nearly 20 years and have developed twenty six branches of this ancient Gaelic-Irish clan with an extensive data base of other families who have not been developed into branch status. Please contact me so we can carry the genealogy of William and Elizabeth and your grandfather further. I would like to assign a branch number to this genealogy.
