I think my grandmother was mary hilferty, daughter of Elizabeth. I have spoken to my great-aunt who remembers Mary's brothers...Daniel the oldest, hugh, ed, francis. The records I have for Mary would put her at about the same age as Mary, the youngest daughter, in the 1920 census. My grandmother mary hilferty married joseph riley. She died in the fall of 1970 shortly after labor day.

hello there, i have just started looking into my family history about an hour ago so my information is few and far bewtween so i apologise in advance. i dont know any dates or even names outside my direct line of family and have never looked into it previously as im only 22 years old.

on another note.
my name is Daniel Andrew Hilferty, 7th march 1986, born Glasgow. my dad is also Daniel Hilferty, and so is my grandad Daniel Hilfery. the name is most deffinately Hilferty and not Helferty though so im not sure if there is any relationship directly or distantly, im not sure.
im not sure of my grandparents roots at present, my grandad passed away afew years ago and and i havent spoken to my granny Betty (Elizabeth Quinn) yet about trying to trace the family. but she currently lives in the greenfaulds area so i believe there may be some connection somewhere along the line.

i am going to look into trying to trace as much family, direct and distant as possible so if you have a compilation of information that i could have that you have collected it would be very much appreciated as it may help me fill in some gaps at some point.

thanks for your time

Sincerely,

Daniel Hilferty

hello there, i was literally 5 minutes ago watching something on tv on ancestry and decided i would do some minor work into looking into my family tree and all branches possible. your message struck me quite quickly for afew reasons, my name is Daniel Andrew Hilferty im 22 years old and live in Cumbria in England. my dads name is also Daniel and his twin brother is Michael so you can understand why within 5 minutes i decided to try and contact you on the off chance there is some link. my grandfathers name was also Daniel (somewhat of a family first name as you may have noticed) my grandfather sadly died afew years ago. my grandparents Daniel Hilferty and Elizabeth (Betty) Quinn have 5 children and i know my grandfather is the youngest of at least 6. i really have never looked into any family history or know of anyone in the family that has so i dont really have much infomation to offer but i am strongly under the impression that my family name has/had roots in ireland and possibly immigrated during a potatoe famine, but i have no proof of that as of yet. i was also told years ago that there may be some roots in the spannish armada but i really dont know how credible that is.
if you are still signed up and have compiled any information of the Hilferty or other derivative family i would be very interested in the information as it may be helpful for me in isolating some missing links as and when i come to researching and recording my family tree.

i have made a short note using the info you have left in your message incase it comes in useful even if you dont manage to get back to me. if you dont manage to get back to me, good luck in your quest.

thankyou very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Daniel Andrew Hilferty
(7th March 1986)
Born: Glasgow

Sir, I have written to you earlier concerning my maternal GGM Mary E Hilferty/Helferty. Her records that, I know of all show Helferty, but we're beginning to believe it s/b Hilferty. We show her as a domestic in Wilkes-Barre in the 1880 census at 16 y/o. Her birth year is estimated as 1861,based on her death in 1926 at 65 y/o.
I have her in 1887, as married to my GGF Edward McGinty in Phila. My problem is where did she come from before Wilkes - Barre,Pa.;when did she leave Wilkes Barre to go to Phila? When and where did they get married. We have looked for Church records in Phila, but haven't turned up anything. When and where did she come from in Ireland. The only referrence to Ireland we have is her Death Certificate, which is very suspect. My GF (Marys Son-in-Law) would have been the surviving kin and next would have been my Mother who was 10-11 years old when Mary died. Marys daughter Mary E McGinty (my Maternal GM) died in 1922 in childbirth. Edward died in 1903 on the job.
We are lookng for sibling info to Mary or her husband. The first two letters of her fathers first name are all thats legible on her documents. They are"JA" or "YA".
This information concerning Mary and Edward is all that needed to put my mothers family history in America in the books-so to speak. Ireland is another issue. Thanks for your help. JIM

I am not necessarily researching Francis Hilferty, but rather a Mary E Hilferty, whom I believe to be my maternal GGM. It is believed that she emigrated t theUS at an early age possibly from England.I believe she lived in a section of Philadelphia Pa knownas "Spring Garden or around 38th & Wallace St., prior to marrying my GGF Edward McGinty.
My calculations based on her Death Certificate would have her as born in 1861,probably in Ireland, perhaps Donegal. She emigrated to the US at an early age(?); Mary and Edward had one daughter Mary McGinty Boyce - my maternal GM,who died in childbirth in 1922.
Please contact me at jim_kirkwood@yahoo.com
Thank you.

At the time they were residing in Drumhearve in the district of Ramelton in the union of Milford in the county of Donegal. My Gmother Sadie(Sarah) was born on the 12th September 1891. Sadie married my Gfather in Revere MA on 15 aug 1914 it shows her surname as Noonan (on birth record it is NOON) Shows Mother as Annie Hilferty(Nancy on birth record)

Yes, there is information regarding Edward F. Hilferty. It was compiled by Cliff Holforty while researching the Hilferty, Helferty, Halferty and Holforty surnames. And, on this same message board there was an inquiry from a Carla Deason concerning Edward F. Hilferty.

If you would like to share more information please contact me and I will see if Cliff will agree to correspond with you as there are several missing links that would be nice to clear up.

My best,
Nina

update wanted

Dear Carla and Clif,
I have read all the messages on the Hilferty message board and found them fascinating. Carla, this is Aunt Kitty. Clif, I am Edward F. Hilferty iii's daughter. Much of what you have researched I already knew. I had forgotten there was an Aunt Fanny and don't ever remember hearing about Annie or Charles, my father's aunt and uncle. Since my father died 36 years ago when I was 24 and my mother didn't know much about the family, there are many gaps in my knowledge.
The census of 1910 confirms the lore that my grandfather maintained two homes, one for his wife and one for his mother. I don't know why Charles was unemployed. I hope it wasn't just to take advantage of his brother's generosity. There was one other child, Frank Christ, eleven years older than my father or 13 years old in 1910. He was the child of Sadie before her marriage to Edward ii. I knew him well as a child so am sure that he existed. His father was Baumgarten? (if I remember correctly0 but changed his name to Christ.
Sadie owned a beauty shop and died when I was three years old in 1942.
The potato famine story was about grandmother Laferty(Lafferty?). I don't know whether she was Margaret or not. Have you discovered anything about her?
Edward ii graduated from Temple University with a degree in medicine and dentistry so I was told.
Edward i was supposedly a drummer boy in the Civil War. He returned home white haired so the story goes.
That's all for now. Please update any information you have. I can fill you in on the current branch of the family if you haven't already done so.
I was fascinated to hear of the origin of Hilferty. No wonder no one from Ireland whom I have talked to has ever heard the name.

My love to you Carla.

I am looking for some information for an 83 year old friend of mine. Her name is Mary Hilferty Paxton. Her father died when she was quite young. She was born in 1917, so her father Fred died sometime around 1920. I forgot to get her mothers name. Fred is supposedly buried somewhere in VA. any help in getting this trail started would be apreciated.

Tom Sandera
tsandera@columbus.rr.com

Hilferty of Woodlawn Ave. Phila, PA

Clifford,
I have just completed a trip to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, PA.
My father's family is burried there. Daniel Hilferty is listed as being 72 years of age at his death in March of 1943 that would place his birthdate some where in the 1871 time frame. James is shown as 46 years 6 months but I believe this to be incorrect because family stories have him living into his 50's and this would be supported by the census of 1920 which shows him 40 years old. James death being listed as October 1935 I believe him to be 56 years of age at his death. This would place his birth year about 1879. Michael's death is listed as Sept 1925 and his age at death 38 years 11 months. That would place him borned Oct 1886 which is right on with the Michael of the family of Ellen and Hugh Helferty.
I have also uncovered an Anna Hilferty burried in the same plot. Her date of interment is 11/2/34 and age at death listed as 59 years 7 months. Anna would be born April of 1875.
Daniel and Annie (Anna) differ by 4 years and James by 2 from the birth records listed for the children of Ellen and Hugh Helferty but the overlap in names is very close.
I am in contact with St. Vince in Phila, PA in hopes of getting a copy of the marriage record for my grand parents. I hope that I can get additional information from it.
Do you have any suggestions on where I should go from here to get additional information.
Thanks so much for you help so far.
Dan

Clifford,
Thanks for the information.
I attempted to confirm some of this information with my mother. My father is Lawrence Edward Hilferty and he was born Nov. 23 1924. The census records of 1920 for Woodlann Ave. Phila, PA are for his family.
My mother knows very little of his family beyond his brothers and sisters. She met my father in the late 1940's long after his parents had died. She remembers one story that tells of seven brothers coming over from Ireland and that there was some issue which cause the brothers to break up upon reaching the US. There was no mention of a mother coming over on the trip. (There is also a story that this is why the spelling of the name was changed.)
The ages of the brothers Michael and Daniel do appear to relate to the relative ages of these individuals but there are only five brothers listed in the family of Hugh and Ellen Helferty.
I am going to visit the grave yard where the family is buried. Michael Hilferty is a WW1 vet and his grave stone, the only one on the plot, may have his birth date.
I'll let you know.
Thanks again for your help.
Dan

Cliford W. Holforty,
I was just browsing the web pages and came across your discussion. I wonder if you can lead me in the right direction.
I have traced my father's family back to the 1880's when I believe by grandfather James Vicent Hilferty left Tenor, Ireland.
There are no surviving members for my fathers family. My best understanding comes from the 1920 Census records. I have discovered that my grandfather came to Philadelphia, PA from Ireland in 1890 with his brother Michael. Michael and another brother Daniel lived with my grandparents. Daniel camed over from Ireland in 1888.
My grandfather died in 1934 my grandmother in 1927.
My own father die in 1965.
I am hoping to trace my father's roots in Ireland. Your discussion is the first I have seen that shows the Hiferty family in Ireland.
I would appreciate any help you can lend in my quest.
Dan Hilferty

He was an M.D. and D.D.S. He was married to Sarah Laferty, died 10/42. His father was Edward F. Hilferty 1st and he most likely came over from Ireland around the time of the potato famine. My mom told me when she was a little girl they lived on Baldwin, MD and used to receive mail for a Joseph Hilferty in Baldwin, N.Y. That's it.Let me know if there is anything in common.
Hilferty Grandfather of Carla Deason

Dear Carla,

I am afraid that I may have confused you with all of the census data that I sent you.

If you look at the 1910 census notation that I sent you will see that the head of the household is Dr. Edward F. Hilferty and he is a Dentist. In that household is a two year old son Edward F. Hilferty who was born in 1908. The 2 year old child, Edward, is your Grandfather and he is the only child of Dr. Edward and Sarah. Dr. Edward and Sarah are your great grandparents and Margaret F. Hilferty, the mother of Dr. Edward is your great great grandmother. The 1880 census notation describes the family of your great great grandparents, E. F. Hilferty and M. F. (Margaret) Hilferty. The 8 year old son, E. F. Hilferty in the 1880 census is to become Dr. Edward Hilferty the father of your Grandfather. Dr. Edward had two sisters, Fannie and Annie which were born before 1880 and one brother Charles who was born in 1882. I hope this explanation will clarify your uncertanty.

I will be glad to send you copies of these census sheets and other information about the genealogy if you will give me an address to send the material to. Researching the Halferty, Helferty, Hilferty and Holforty families is my hobby. They are all descended from the same Gaelic-Irish clan which had it's begining in County Donegal in the Ancient Province of Ulster in the North of Ireland.

If you are concerned about internet security you can send your address to me by U. S. Mail. I do want to find out more about your branch of the genealogy. Perhaps you would prefer that I do that with you mother in which case tell me how to contact her. I exchange correspondence with descendants of the clan all over the world and have personally met and interviewed descendants in Ireland, Canada and Scotland as well as here in the U,S.

Best Regards,

Cliff

Dear James,

Over the last two months I have been working on another Hilferty line and have been corresponding with Anne Marie (Hilferty) Connelly about her Hilferty ancestors. This ancestral family is noted for several generations of John Francis Hilferty men being the head of household. The earliest of this line that I currently have identified is a John Hilferty married to a Catherine and records four of their children living in the 1900 U.S. Census of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The children are Mary (b. April 1876), Anna (b. October 1879), John (b. October 1882) and James (b. July 1884). According to this record John and Catharine immigrated from Ireland in 1870 and Catharine is recorded as having 12 children of which 6 were still living in 1900.

The interesting part of this census record is that the child James is shown to have been born in July of 1884, the same as you listed James B. Hilferty. Your James B. Hilferty died in 1918 and consequently had a foreshortened adult life and as I pointed out in my message on May 22, 2001 his widow and children were living with his wife's sister's family in the 1920 U.S. Census.

The grandfather of Anne Marie (Hilferty) was John (b. October 1882) the brother of James(b. July 1884) and he likewise had a foreshortened adult life having been killed in a train accident in about 1914. John's family is found in the 1920 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania census as a widow and children living with her sister also. What a tragic unexpected coincidence!

I am trying to prove that the James Hilferty (b. July 1884) to John Hilferty and Catharine is the same as James B. Hilferty, your ancestor, but, it will take some time I suspect. One possible way to prove it is if the application for marriage record of both John and James B. record the same parents thus making them brothers. We shall see.

Please let me hear from you.

Clifford W.
Hi Carla,
I am looking at long shots. Looking for the first born daughter of my ggrandparents Samuel and Mariah Sigford, Catharine. She would have been born about 1857 give or take a year, and I believe that she married and E.C. Chandler. They lived in Chicago in about 1901.

Does any of that coincide with your line?

Let me know if it does. /J

Hello Clifford!
I am looking for information on Daniel Helferty who married Mary Friel. They had a daughter Rose Ann born in Scotland about 1854. They were probably born around the 1830s and may have lived near Greenock, Scotland. Any information on this family would be appreciated. Thank you. Lori MacCormack

I am clutching at straws, trying to find a connection to James Madden & Ellen McCarry (McCarey, etc.), who chose James Hilferty (b. Ireland) of South Philadelphia to be godfather for their daughter (my grandmother) Mary Ellen Madden, b. 1885. Could you possibly have information on the birthplace of James Hilferty (could lead me to the birthplaces of James & Ellen Madden). Many thanks.
