Hello, Frank Hilgefort was my grandfather. He was from Fort Larmie, Ohio. Grandpa died when I was young. What do you know about the Hilgeforts? It is neat to find something out about my family. My parents divorced when I was young and I really do not know much about my dad's side of the family. His name is Ken Hilgefort and Frank was his father. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Annie

Hello, I did my research starting 30 years ago. My grandfather was Lee Hilgeford, son of Jacob Frederick Hilgeford, son of Clemens Hilgefort- Hilgeford, as he is the on responsible for Clemens name spelling change on his tombstone in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. I do have a picture of Clemens that was kept by Lee. I am not very good at this site and do not know how to contact you personally. I would like to get you a copy of the pic. of Clemens and Maria, his wife. I have passed this on to others so they may have already gotten it to you.I was able to research the line in Dinklage through the Catholic church.
I agree with you that so much of what is on the internet is not true. I believe in records. I appreciate any info. you have to share.
Sincerely, Christine

A relative was just visiting a cemetery in Covington, KY (across from Cincinnati) investigating a Hilgefort grave. He said it read: Hien. Friedrich Hilgefort, born June 2, 1823, Holdorf. It also said something about Flatterlow-hausen gest (I don't know what this means. Since Dinklage and Holdorf are only a few miles apart, I was wondering if their might be a connection to Clemens?

If Hilgefort was her maiden name it's very unlikely she came from Scotland. But stranger things have happened. My family consists of Dietrich and his wife, Margaret Barhorst who came here with their 4 children. Henry and Clemens married and had children. Elizabeth married John Willman, had 2 children and died. Joseph had no children. They came from Bremen and landed in Baltimore. I'm assuming they came through Cincinnati.

It isn't unlikely she came through Cleveland. A lot of people came by way of the Great Lakes.

There was an odd Hilgefort here named Barney. I can't find out anything about him. There is an old book floating around by Clemens Heitman, I think, about Hilgeforts. It's in German.

E-mail me what you know about your ancestor and I'll look in my odds and ends.

Catherine

I do not have any information on her parents. Do you have any Hilgeforts that went through Cleveland?

I am investigating Durstocks (or Duerstocks) who originated in Oldenburg, Germany. I noted that J. Will Duerstock born in Oldenburg in 1854 married Mary Elizabeth Hilgefort sometime before 1880 in Cleveland. She later relocated with her husband to northern Kentucky and is buried there. I have a copy of her picture. Is this in any of the lines you have investigated?

Dear Catherine,

thanks a lot for answering to my email. I will try to contact my father as soon as possible to get the information about the Hilgefort who went to Cinncinati and returned to Germany.

All the Hilgeforts we've found here - so it seems at the moment - have the same ancestor: a man named Johan Hilgefort, who was born around 1630 in the area of Dinklage near Oldenburg.

You could please so kind to send me more informations about Johan Theodor Hilgefort, married with Margaretha Barhorst from Steinfeld? I need his birthday (and the day he died), the place where he was born and perhaps the year when he left Germany so I could try to find him in our data.

If we've completed the "path" from the now living generation back to the anchestor from 1630 I will prepare a GEDCOM-file - so we perhaps could exchange the data. You are interested in that data? Or would you prefer to find them in a web site?

Again thanks a lot for anwering. It's quite amusing to email to somebody with - as it seems - the same anchestor and so far away.

Best regards
Ulrich Hilgefort
Hannover
Germany
Ulrich,

Most of the Hilgeforts on the Rootsweb-Hilgefort forum are related. The original ancestor was Johan Theodor Hilgefort from Hone-Dinklage. His wife was Margaretha Barhorst from Steinfeld. Four children came with them in 1847; Heinrich, Clemens, Elizabeth, and Joseph. They settled near the town of Ft. Loramie, Shelby County, Ohio. The area where Auglaize, Mercer, and Shelby counties in Ohio was primarily settled by people from Oldenburg and some from Hanover and Westfalen. Most of those families are still here. They usually came through Cincinnati.

Who was the Hilgefort who went back to Germany?

Catherine Wolken

Dear Madam,

I just found your name via the search engine Google:

Greatings from Old Germany!

My father has started to search for his ancestors and went back until 1630 - when the 30 years lasting war destroyed any further informations. For example he found a Hilgefort that went to Cinncinati, married there and returned to Germany, to a little village near Oldenburg ...

Now I'm thinking about a data base about our family. If you like to help by adding informations: You're welcome!

If not: I will perhaps be disapponnted - but there's no prob.

Anyway: I'd like to hear from somebody with the same name living very far away!

Greetings
Ulrich Hilgefort
Germany

Sorry for my poor english ...

I am also a descendent of the Hilgefort clan from Shelby County Ohio, but now living in southern CA. My gggrandfather, Johan Hilgefort emigrated from Dinklage, Germany and married Maria Meyer, daughter of Johan Meyer, who emigrated from Neuenkirchen and Anna Maria Muhlenkamp, whom I haven't tracked down yet.

Hi there.... I do not live near mercer county at this point (i am now in california)... but I grew up in Fort Loramie (shelby county). Most of my family still lives there, and we were not the only hilgeforts in town. I don't know if this interests you, but I thought I should pass on the info. I will pass on this page to my mother... she will probably get into this. And I KNOW she knows a good deal about the family tree. you can go to www.whitepages.com and search for hilgefort... this will give you all of the hilgeforts registered in the phone book in all of the US. there are 58 of them. most are in or near western ohio, with a few folks in colorado. and according to placesnamed.com hilgefort is the 21,519th most popular last name in the United States. control your excitement... i am trying to contain mine.

Hilgefort Genealogy

After I e-mailed you I noticed that the have a surname message board for this name if you go under the international one, too. I may try there. I don't know if any of my Hilgefort's came to America or when they did. My ggg grandmother remarried after her 1st husband died. That was to a Thobias Hilgefort. I believe I got that name right. We are in the process of moving and I have put most of my genealogy materials away. I am working off of my memory. If you'd like me to check further I can, but it may take a while to find the information. Thanks!
