Please excuse all of my typos in the last reply. I get carried away and in a hurry - thus making many mistakes.
It was Anna Katherine ETTEN who married Mathias Hilgers - sister of my Agnes Etten. Their mother was Margaret STRUNK, daughter of Christian Strunk and Margaretha STRUNK (both had the same last name).
I'm attaching a website for births and marriages in Walsdorf, and you will see that there are many Ettens, Hilger(s), Strunks, etc. I hope you will be able to get to this website. If not let me know, and we'll find another way. Sure would like to solve this mystery - I'm sure it's connected to the Strunk line.
Pat
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pick/walsd...

I just did a little more digging via the interner, and foud that my Great Grandmother's sister, ANNA KATHERINE ETTEN, married a Mathias HILGERS. Could Anna Katherine be your Katherine Agnes?? I have gotten so confused with Hilger and Hilgers. Could some of the Hilgers dropped the "s" and become Hilger?
Also, I have noticed that there is more than one Joseph Hilger from the Andale area, which made it that much more confusing.
What do you thin?

Thanks for the reply. My Great Grandmother, Agnes Etten Rausch, to whom the letters were written, was born in Walsdorf, Rheinland to Johann Peter Etten and Anna Margaretha STRUNK - so that's where the connection is. They married in Walsdorf 22 Apr 1834. Do you know anything more about the Strunk family and where your Katherine Agnes was from?

Hi Patrica
I am the great granddaughter of Joseph Hilger that you speak about. I do know we are related to the Rausch family and I too wondered how but my mother said we were cosins.
Do you know Joseph and Racine's comman ascestor since they were cousins. Their parents must have been brother and sister. My "Joseph Hilger's" father was Johanna Mathias Hilger and he married Katherine Agnes Strunk.

Joseph Mathias Hilger's son Herman Joseph Hilger married Frances Louise Erker and their daughter Anna Catherine (Hilger) Schwind is my mother who married Clay Christopyer Schwind. They are my parents

So with our branches crossing that makes you and myself about 4th cousins maybe.

I have 2 letters written in German sent to my Great Grandmother in Racine, WI from Joseph Hilger in KS.
One is dated 15 Mar 1905 - return address is Route 1, Goddard, KS, and the 2nd is dated 5 Aug 1905, return address is Route 1, Andale, KS. (Are they one and the same address?)
The letters' opening: Dear cousin, niece and family...
I have yet to determine how Joseph Hilger ties in with my Great Grandmother, Agnes ETTEN Rausch. Other related family names: Dahm, Scholzen - Racine, WI
Looking for anyone related to this Hilger of KS -
Patricia
Oregon

Andrea-

I came across references to the Hilger family in Pierre SD when I was researching my grandmother's uncle, Michael Reisdorfer. One of the witnesses at his wedding in 1883 was Anson Hilger, and JD Hilger was a godparent to his daughter born 1885. I started working on them because my 2g-grandmother was a Hilger...they are all from Sandweiler Luxembourg. Daniel's brother Michael is my 3g-grandfather...I didn't know so many of my Luxembourg relatives ended up in the US!
Don't have much on Anson's family, besides what you have...I do have a son Edward D., age 9 in 1880, 1st communion in Pierre 1883, lose him after that.
For John D- he went back to Minnesota and raised a family of doctors...they seemed to be a fairly prominent family in St. Paul...David, Andrew, Josephine, John, Leo and Robert...I think Andrew W. may be your "Willie"
E-mail me if you want more info...I'd like to compare notes.

Their oldest child was born 1853 in Illinois, so I figure they immigrated prior to that. I haven't found either of them on ship's passenger lists, either together or seperately.
Do you have any information on a John Hilger born 1865 in Carter County, Kentucky married to Harriet Amanda Kibby?

or a Mary Ida Hilger born 1892 Carter County, Kentucky married to William Nelson Perry. I do not know her parents.
