Re: Hilgerts, Bavaria to Italy to Philadelphia

Hi!
My birth name is Nicole Hilgert Noriega. I'm the last of the Hilgerts in California. My grandfather, Charles Stephen Hilgert, son of Charles Henry Hilgert and Rose Schlegel, moved to California in 1939 from Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. He and my grandmother, Anna Marie Daley Hilgert, had one child, my mom, Anne Marie Hilgert Noriega. She's 74 and was born in Philadelphia in 1935. I too am an only child and I let the name die in our family when I didn't use the Hilgert name for my only child, a daughter as well. I just reconnected with my cousin Mark O'Neill through another post about Hilgerts. He had wanted info about my great grandparents, Rose Schlegel and Charles Henry Hilgert. I am very interested in family history and family is very important to me. I got married back in 1995 using my great grandmother's wedding band. It is still inscribed C.H. to R.S. It's over 100 years old. I wear my grandmother's ring on my other hand. I know that Rose Schlegel was one of 13 kids. I don't know anything about Charles H. Hilgert, my grandfather's dad. I think he died before I was born. (1969) I know that my grandfather's grandparents only spoke German and my grandfather grew up knowing German. My grandfather, Charles S. Hilgert was born in Phila. in 1910. Do you think we're related to the Hilgerts who came from Italy? That would be neat! It's great to hear from you!
Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Wow...I haven't seen you since you were a kid in the early 1980's when my bothers (Jack/Joe) and my mom visited. We still talk about it today.

Here is an email address, please send me a note outside of the site and we can catch up. It is hard to believe that was nearly 30 years ago.

Talk to you then....Mark
audubon@hotmail.com

Michele:
I just noticed you have got 2 Ferdinand Hilgerts confused.

My grandfather, James Ferdinand "Ferd" Hilgert, (6 May 1900-16 Oct 1989), was the son of Frank Michael HILGERT and Martha Moss "Bea" BAGBY HILGERT. He was born near Mound City, Holt Co., MO on 6 May 1900, not 1876. He married my grandmother, Buelah Blanche TERRY, on 1 Aug 1925. They would have been living in St. Joseph, MO in 1930. He later lived in Kansas City, MO with his second wife.

Evidently he was named after his uncle Ferdinand HILGERT, born in 1876, son of Nicholas HILGERT and Almyra SHACKELFORD HILGERT.

Michelle,
My great-grandfather, Frank Michael HILGERT, (29 July 1879-20 Dec 1959), is buried at Ft. Logan National Cem in Denver, CO.
My great-grandmother, Martha Moss BAGBY HILGERT, (06 July 1879-24 Nov 1961) is buried in Kansas City, MO.
My grandfather, James Ferdinand HILGERT, (06 May 1900-16 Oct 1989) is also buried in Kansas City, MO.
My grandfather had a brother, Joseph Paxton HILGERT, who only lived from about 1902-1903. He is buried in Holt Co., MO.
I knew my great-grandmother very well, but not my great-grandfather because he left the family when my grandfather was very young. I don't know if he had any other children. There is a woman buried next to him (sorry I don't have the name in front of me) I assume this was his wife at the time of his death. Look him up on interment.net.
Also, on Frank HILGERT's funeral card, it says Christian Science Services were held at Chapel of the Chimes on 24 Dec 1959. This would probably have been a major split? with both his HILGERT family and my great-grandmother's BAGBY family as they were devout Catholics.

I am searching for my great aunt, Irene Krazalkovich Hilgert Presby (or possibly Pressdee). I don't know if she was widowed or divorced from Hilgert. Her date of birth was 1900 in FelsoTelekes, Hungary. Any help is greatly appreciated, .
Her last know residence was Akron, Ohio
