HILLIS - HILLHOUSE Surname DNA Project

I have recently established the HILLIS - HILLHOUSE Surname DNA Project.
My great-grandparents, James & Mary (MARBUT) HILLIS, were married in Giles Co,TN, and my Grandfather, Cullom L. HILLIS, was born there. James was the son of Andrew "Jackson" HILLIS & Mary Ann SHELTON. His first wife was Aliza Elizabeth HAWKINS. Jackson lived with his first family, in Lauderdale Co,AL. After Elizabeth's death, he married Mary, and lived in Lawrence Co,TN and Giles Co,TN. It is unknown who Jackson's parents or siblings were, but it is believed that the name was once HILLHOUSE (pronounced HILLIS).
Therefore, we would like for direct lineage HILLIS and HILLHOUSE males to think about joining this study, in hopes of finding out who Jackson's family was... or wasn't, whatever the case may be! At any rate, maybe it will help us figure out which HILLIS and/or HILLHOUSE families are related. My twin brother has agreed to be the first DNA donor. For anyone interested in joining this project, please contact me off the list, at hillisdnaproject@gt.rr.com . Any known adoption of such males will make them ineligible for the project... It must be a direct blood lineage. We think we may be descended from Samuel HILLIS/HILLHOUSE & Ann LUCKIE, and are interested in proving, or dis-proving that theory.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at First Baptist Church in Cooper with Johnny Witherspoon and Richard Tatum officiating. Interment follows in East Delta Cemetery under the direction of Delta Funeral Home.
The family receives friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Biardstown. She was the daughter of Samuel Benjamin Hillhouse and America Whitmore Hillhouse. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Cooper. She married T.J. Scott, April 6, 1944, and he preceded her in death March 21, 1995.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Joe Hoot of Canton; grandchildren, Scott and Kimarie Hoot of Longmont, Colo., William and Jenny Hoot of Garland and Kassaundra Lawrence of Fort Worth; five grandchildren, Ryan Lawrence, Ashton Hoot, Jacob Hoot, Zachary Hoot and Jacquelyn Hoot.

According to NARA, her census card is 1/2 choctaw blood and there is Martha Lewis and Nelson Lewis also in the home. The number at NARA was 251747. The ARC identifier was 635681. I think the instructions say you can contact them and give them some numbers and they can find this for you. I was not able to actually locate her card on the Dawes roll but her name is there and the census card number is 5503. I think that is the number one gives to NARA. I am going to go back to the web site and try to find out what I need to know. One thing I know I need to know, how to tie her into the Hillhouse family. Does anyone know anything about this girl and who her family is and now they tie in.
I also found 43 people listed on the Guillon Miller Roll Index. These people had claims wanting compensation arising from the judgement of the US Court of Claims on May 28, 1906. Although they applied not all claims were allowed. Does anyone know who those people were? You can see them at:

I am seeking information about Mack "HILHOUSE" (HILLIS), who was born about 1874 in Alabama (white). He appears in 1880 census, Lawrence County,Tenn. in the household of Minor W. BUTLER, whose wife Elizabeth, was his aunt. The houshold also includes Lina HILHOUSE (Selina HILLHOUSE/HILLIS), who I suspect may be his aunt also. She is cited as "single", and HILLHOUSE (HILLIS) is her maiden name. Is this Mack a son of John Mac HILLIS, whose wife died between 1876-1880? (John Mac, brother to Elizabeth & Lina).... or IS Lina his mother?...

Hillhouse Cemetary

It is in a very rural part of Missouri. I'd take I-44 to the Highway 7 turnoff to Richland. Follow that highway thru Richland. About 7- 10 miles from Richland there's another turnoff going towards the town of Stoutland. Believe it's T highway. Turn there and start looking to the left, you'll see a little gravel track that leads to the cemetary. It has a beautiful location and was the grass was nice and short when I was there last. I'm not sure if there is a sign at the highway or not saying there's a cemetary. You can also get directions probably by going out to the Camden County Mo. board. I think the man who owns the cemetary has messages out there.

My brother has been missing since July 5 of 2003, he just vanished. His name is Robert Earl Hillhouse and he is 36 yrs old, if anyone knows where he is please let me know. He has a tattoo of melodie anne & shayla kaye on his shoulder. I am his baby sister Terina Fleetwood. He was last seen in San Antonio at Super 8 Motel. He also has a tattoo of a cross on his left ear, and his left middle finger is stubbed at the first joint, and a tattoo of an eagle on his right forearm. front tooth is broken, he is 5"10 weighs between 160 - 180, has brown hair and green eyes, and olive complection.

Mary Ann is some times referred to in the Old Parish Records as Campbell McKinlay, Mary Campbell McKinlay et al. She was born about 1774 and according to her death certificate (died 11.02 1863 at Loudon Kirk Ayrshire aged 86) her Father was William McKinlay

A number of relatives and descendents of John and Mary emigrated to America, Canada and Australia throughout the 1700, 1800 1900s'

Some of the children of John Hillhouse and Mary Ann Campbell McKinlay moved to Glasgow and the surrounding area prior to emigrating.

John and Mary had 5 daughters Mary 03.09.1796, Agnes 17.01.1799, Grizzel
08/10/1804, Sarah 08/10/1804, Janet 28.061807; and 5 sons
John 09/7/1801, William 1810, Ivie 08/11/1812, Robert 1818, James?

Ivie m. Mary Stevenson1836 Their two surviving sons were John 29.7.1838 and Ivie 1853.
Their youngest son Ivie m Janet King Kelly 1873. They and their children continued to live in Ayrshire until at least 1891.
John and his wife Jane Hutcheson m1865 moved to Hamilton Lanarkshire they and their children moved to Glasgow and the Cadder area.
One of their sons namely Robert who incidentally is our Grandfather m. Jane Graham 1/12/1865; and he and his wife and children moved from Cadder to the Springburn and later the Possilpark area of Glasgow.
One of their sons who emigrated to Australia prior to 1914 served in the Australian army during the First War.
It is believed his daughter Amelia emigrated to the U S A
His youngest son Ivey or Ivor emigrated to Australia in 1949

In the 1920 census of Gill Township, Meriwether County, Georgia is an entry for Mack "HOLLES", 45 (born ca 1874), white, born Alabama (parents also), with spouse Jennie/Jimmie (47, b-GA), and son Clifford, 6, born Missouri. Does anyone have information on this family? Could this really be Mack HILLHOUSE/HILLIS?...who appears in the 1880 census of Lawrence County,Tenn.? (with family of Minor W. BUTLER) I found Mack HOLLES while doing a soundex search for Mack HILLHOUSE/HILLIS, and he was the only one whose criteria matched up!

Looking for any info. on Phorton?Hillhouse g-grandfather, wife was said to have died giving birth to my grandfather, Hugh David Hillhouse, b. April 1, 1904, in MS. d. June 21, 1988, in Rockford, IL. Hugh has a half-brother Albert Hillhouse of MS. and a half-sister Annie Hillhouse Whitiker? of MS. and believe there were also stepsiblings.
Hugh married Bessie Tharp,in Louisville, MS sometime in 1929. They had 6 sons Estelle D., Davis O., David L., Donald R., William, and Jesse and 6 daughters Katherine, Betty, Frances, Louise, Pearl,and Ethel (died as a child. Also interested in any info. on the grave of Ethel Hillhouse somewhere in MS.

Her maiden name: Annette May Hillhouse
Born 19 January 1935 in Port Kembla, Wollongong, Australia. Married Gregory Colin McKinnon in 1961 in Australia.

Her mother's name is Carolyn Post, and she was born in Bremmen, we don't know the date/year. Her father's name was Gordon Stewart Hillhouse, born 1898 in Fremantle, Western Australia.

We don't know the date of her parent's wedding, the wedding certificate is in pencil!!! The wedding was performed in the United Kingdom.

Had another son Albert Hillhouse and daughter Annie Hillhouse Whitiker? both of these children are believed to live or lived in MS., they are the 1/2 brother and sister to Hugh.
