If you have or can find a copy of the book "Lownsdale, Hillman, Craigs and Others" by E. H. Brevoort, she may have provided enough information to satisfy the DAR. I have a copy but cannot find it at the moment. The author's niece sent me a copy as well as her DAR papers she used for her application. Whether the DAR will still accept that information is questionnable.
Ralph Hillman

Hillman, Ulster Ireland

I am searching for a Mary Hillman, likely born about 1810-1830 in Ulster, who married a James Black.

Their only known child was Alexander Hillman Black, born 12 Aug 1851, most likely in County Tyrone (not proven, but a family story claims Tyrone).

I would appreciate ANY clues to her family. There were Hillmansin County Derry (Londonderry) and in County Antrim. Since Derry/Londonderry is right nest to Co. Tyrone, ????

ANY clues or help would be appreciated.

Have you got a connection in Hampshire, Portsmouth (UK)area? My gt gt grandfather was a James Hillman. His daughter, my gr grandmother married in 1841 and I know from her marriage certificate that her father was a seaman RN. There are no census records because, I expect, he was at sea on Census nights. He died in 1847 or 1849. His wife was Martha Hall.

I doubt we have a connection to South Wales, but one never knows.. and it is nice to know the boards are looked at.

Regards,
David

The only things I can suggest right now are to haunt Pike County archives, and to check out as many marriage records of Daniel's children as you can. If they are useful they will give the names of their mothers. Knowing their religion may help find a church record. That might be some work. Also it's possible - if they were the kind of family to keep a bible - that one of the descendants has a bible.
Where are the original names you are getting here for the wives? Did you find a death record or burial record for wife number one (that would be pretty early). Sometimes you can't find one record, but can find proof through other means. Perhaps Rachael's death record will give her former name? Perhaps the death record of one of her children will give her name? I don't know what is available for Indiana, as it's not a place I am used to perusing.
Mary Ann would have had to die, and Daniel marry Rachel, all between 1834 and 1851. This is, of course, assuming he did actually marry Rachel. In 1840 the female in the house is 20-30. In 1850 Rachel is 28. This could mean nothing, but it's possible that the woman in the 1840 household is actually Mary Ann. (I wonder if the Elijah LANE next door is Mary Ann's father?) This would narrow down the marriage to 1840-1850. It is possible that Rachel and Daniel did not marry in Pike Cty.

I apologize for the confusion. Daniel was born in Kentucky and moved to Indiana where I believe Mary Lane was his first wife but can find no records of him marrying a Rachel Wright. Also it would be Pike county Indiana. Thank you for bringing this to my attention will remember it for further use.

its interesting
I tell you what i've got:
My Pinkas was married to Gitle Weiss (I don't know about other wives - but maybe...)
I know about 2 kids -
1. the older is Eugenia who married to Wolf Friedlander and both died in a tragic gas accident in their house in 1929. they had 4 kids - the 2 youngest boys were killed in the holocaust. one of their girls is my grandmother.
2. the younger kid of Pinkas was Jacob (b. 1890). he was married to Berta Rosenbaum, they born in Dolina or Perehinsko, lived in Duisburg and both of them with their 3 children (Gizel, Admond and Wolfgang) were killed in the holocaust.

I know that many other cousins were also killed in the holocaust.

anything in common?

The common thing is that my grandfather was born near to the Perehinsko. This town is called Lypiwka - Липівка and it's about 30 km to Perehinsko (old name Ladzkie Szlacheckie or Lackie Szlacheckie).
He went for officer's school to the Austria-Hungary (Vien or Budapest). Propably there he met his first wfie but I don't know her name.... After IstW.W. he came to Cracow and he met second wife. She was my grandmather. Died in Auschwitz. Anything common ? I think there could be some connctions.
Steve,
You may want to try giving more information than this. Try: where the man was from (city and country), where he died, his mother's/father's names if you know them, whom he married...
Also, try leaving a message on the board related to his home town(s).

I have checked FreeBMD (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl) and I believe this many be your man:
Hillman Reginald Sydney Christchurch 2b	684
His name: Reginald Sydney, his birth was registered in the June quarter for the year 1908. It was registered at Christchurch and is in volume 2b on page 684. You can order his birth registration from the record office. To do that you can look here:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html

I then checked for a marriage of a male HILLMAN and a female PLUMB. I found this: Marriages Dec 1901
Hillman William Sydney	Christchurch 2b	1545
Plumb Alice Christchurch 2b	1545
Note the second name Sydney for William.
This couple had their marriage registered in the December quarter of 1901. Unfortunately they won't be together in then 1901 census, but you might be able to see them with their families. Checking for other HILLMAN births between the December quarter 1901 (possibly even before) and the quarter for Reginald's birth might give you the names of other children born to the couple. Registrations were registered for three month time periods, so the first quarter would be registered January to March. This isn't necessarily the time period the event happened, but it is usually close. If you order the certificates I believe they are approximately 10 pounds each. You CAN specify that you only want them if the mother's maiden name is PLUMB. I am not sure exactly how that works, but the page I linked my tell you more.
I believe William may be the William S HILLMAN living at #2 Dorset Place in Bournemouth in 1901. This William is a cabinet maker aged 27 (and born Cornwall). He is a boarder in #383 of the schedule. West Cliff, Bournemouth, (Christchurch)District 2, in Hampshire page 51 (or 54 - both numbers are on the top right corner). I don't know that they married early enough for any children to be eligible to sign up for the war, but you can try. I have to go as I'm supposed to be packing to leave, but if you send me an email at genesaplenty at gmail dot com I will try to find something else for you and give you more ideas on where to look. I believe I have found Alice in Bournemouth as well. She is with her family, which is helpful for later when you want to follow her line.

Maer

Very good to hear from you, Ralph and I hope you're well. I've had to replace my computer and in the process lost most of my email addresses since last we were in touch. But - despite having one of the most dysfunctional ISPs imaginable following successive takeovers of the company with which I signed up - I've not changed my own email address till now.

Yes, I'm still alive and still more or less active. Though in truth the research bit has tended to fizzle out a bit, the easy stuff having been done and the difficult stuff being more difficult. Anyhow, my 'Hillman Genealogy' web page was still there when last I looked and I still update it when there's something new. That's at http://www.hillmanc.fsnet.co.uk/hillman.htm .

Still no known link to the Martha's Vineyard Hillmans, though no doubt Y-chromosome analysis could confirm (or refute) suspicions of a possible link predating the relocation of my lot to Ireland around 1600. Did you ever go down that route?

Best wishes

Charles

(Due to an increasing level of 'service outages' involving Orange, my regular ISP, please copy any substantive reply to this email also to my google mail account at
gimmeldingen@googlemail.com . Thank you. CH)

Your mom used to dress you two alike and used to give you guys the same hair styles too.

I remember your moms, used to wear extensions and your dad was very tall. you should be about 35 at this point, not sure if you are married.

you used to play with Jamil and a bunch of Jamaican girls who lived in the circle.

I think you all moved to plainfield or something. I stll live in new jersey and Im now an attorney. I hope to hear from you soon

Thanks Charles, but I am looking for Hillman's that remained in Ireland.

I am specifically looking for Mary Hillman, who married James Black.

The Hillman family in Castledawson appear to be one of the very few families of that surname in all of Ireland. When I contacted the Irish Genealogy service, they could not identify any Hillman families at all.
