Mabel Harriet Hills, Nashua
Mabel Harriet Hills, 86, died March 30, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua.
She was born on January 25, 1923 in Nashua, the youngest of five children of the late Edward A. and Mabel M. (Hardy) Hills.
Ms. Hills was educated in Hollis and graduated from Hollis High School at what is now known as the Farley Building. Following high school, she attended Margaret Pillsbury Hospital School of Nursing. She became an RN in 1944 then joined the American Red Cross and the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, serving in the European Theater until the end of World War II. She received a B.S. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University on the GII. Bill after the war and took a position teaching nurses students in Lewiston, Maine. When the Korean Conflict broke out, she joined the Maine Reserve Hospital Unit and was assigned to Basic Training Center teaching aide men and corpsmen from June 1953 to October 1954.
In 1957, Ms. Hills moved to Burlington, Vermont for another teaching position. She then obtained her Masters Degree from Boston University in 1964. In 1972, she became Head Nurse on the Clinical Research Unit at University of Vermont. Finally, in 1986, she retired and returned to Hollis.
Ms. Hills always enjoyed gardening, hiking, camping and cross country skiing. She loved nature and the outdoors.
She was an active member of the Hollis Historical Society, serving as President for four years. Her particular interest was the opening of the Always Ready Museum. She became a charter member of Hollis Memorial VFW in 1992 and continued to be an active member. She also became a member of the Anna Keyes Powers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution while still in Vermont on April 14, 1984. She became an active member and served as Secretary and Vice-Regent upon her return to Hollis. Finally, she was a charter member of Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Besides her parents, Ms. Hills was predeceased by two brothers, James Hills and Albert Hills; a sister, Grace Chamberlain; and a sister-in-law, Harriet Hills.
Survivors include her sister, Ruth Coleman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
