Helen, I do not have your names in my Hills family, but I haven't tried to track all the children of John and Elizabeth forward.

Beth, I would be interested in your Hills list. I have done more research since I posted last, and have the family back to the early 1700s.

Just wanted to go back to the original post as well as ask English cousins for help.

Halstead's History of Kent says the name was originally de Helles. There are various properties that carry the Helles name and are assumed to have been named for the family. The Abby Roll (List of Brompton) also has the name delaHill, There are references to a Gosselin de Helles from 1050 as witness to a charter granted by King Henry 1 of France. The family is said to be named for or to have named Hielles, Beauvais, Normandy.

I'm looking for connections to a Hercules Hills in Canterbury and in Rochester. Hercules Hills seems to go back to Boughton Under Blean. There are records through the 1750's in Canterbury. St. Peter and Paul's parish register takes the given name into the 1500s.

Hi June
Since our last messages in 2004, I have found that my James Hills born 1838, married Elizabeth Cross, father of William James Hills, father of Derek Hills, to me. On the 1881 census, James Ills is living in Cambridge. His parents are Thomas Hills and Mary Grummet. Thomas parents are Thomas Hills and Sarah Pearson. Thomas Hills (married to Mary Grummot) and your James are brothers. I also have heaps on the HIlls line if you wish to compare notes. I can send to you via email. My home email is superjacis@hotmail.com

regards

Lesley in Australia

Hi Cousins,

I am also a direct descendant of Joseph Hills of Great Burstead Parish,
Billericay, Essex, England.
Below is the line that I have- most of which is reportedly from the Hills
Family in America ..Genealogy Book. I do not have access to it right now.
Your message sounded like I might be missing a Samuel!!!
Can you list the dates and spouses of your line to Benjamin? Is your
Benjamin the husband of Rebecca Ordway? Or is it a diferent Benjamin? so
many times there are common names and it can become confusing... I just
wanted to check... Thanks

This is our line:

Captain Joseph Hills ( b 1602 ) - Hannah Smith
- Married June 24, 1651
in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts

Samuel Hills (b. 1652) - Abigail Wheeler
Married May 20, 1679
in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts

Benjamin Hills (b 1684) - Rebecca Ordway
Married November 7, 1709
in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts

Samuel Hills (b. 1710) - Elizabeth Swain
Married - November 18, 1745
in Chester, New Hampshire

Reuben Hills (b. 1752) - Sarah Currier
Married - January 18, 1779
in Chester, New Hampshire

Samuel Hills (b.1779) - Sarah Bradford
Married - December 1815
in Union, Maine

Edward Hills (b. 1816) - Almena Drake
Married November 17, 1844
in Union, Maine

Sorry, I meant Nigel Webb! I think his details go back to Guiliemus Hills in the 1590's.

Like you, I can't find Hill's Passage or Hills Cottages where so many of the Smiths and Marchants who link with the Hills lived, despite my parents and grandparents living in Maidstone, no-one now knows where they were. Likewise Hills Wharf - I have several old maps and can't find it.

Will have to keep looking,

Teresa

Thank you Greg for all the marvelous details. That was kind of you to type them all out and I appreciate the link too. There is a NZ researcher named Meg working on the Robert Golding branch of Hills with data back to 1700s. Perhaps you know of her already or else I can help you with that. She provided me with photos of Robert and his son Joseph, and I'd be happy to send you them.

Hi again.

I had a brainstorm and checked my notes for Hills born in Masterton. I found:

Roy Harold Martin Hills born in 1913
Ivan James Hills born in 1915
Mona Joyce Hills born in 1916.

No promises but as Harriet died in Masterton it's possible that Frederick and Harriet moved there sometime between 1912 and 1913. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the Electoral Roll handy to confirm this.

Here are some early Hill/s from the Maidstone All Saints Parish Registers (not all are relatives):

1653	Hills	John	Richard	Elizabeth
1687	Hills	Alicia	Joseph	Alicia
1688	Pankhurst	Ann	Henry	Elizabeth
1689	Panckhurst	Mary	Henry	Elizabeth
1689	Hill	Christopher	John	Susanna
1690	Hills	Mary	Joseph	Elizabeth
1690	Hills	John	Robert	Elizabeth
1692	Hill	John	John	Susanna
1692	Hill	John	Jonathan	Elizabeth
1693	Hills	John	Joseph	Alma
1693	Hills	Jane	Simon	Frances
1693	Hills	Robert	Robert	Elizabeth
1694	Hills	Mary	John	Elizabeth
1697	Hills	Frances	Simon	Frances
1707	Hills	John	John	Mary
1714	Hills	Sarah	John	Mary
1716	Hills	Mary	John	Mary
1718	Hills	John	John	Mary
1720	Hills	Robert	Robert	Mary
1720	Hills	Alicia	John	Mary
1723	Hills	Elizabeth	John	Mary
1725	Hills	Edward	John	Mary
1727	Hills	Robert	John	Mary
1728	Hills	John	Christopher	Margaret
1730	Hills	Thomas	Thomas	Sarah
1730	Hills	Susanna	John	Mary

As you can see there's a heap of children to John and Mary in the early 1700's but they can't all be the same John and Mary.

Here are some early marriages from the same Parish:
1713	Hills	John	Goldwell	Mary
1714	Hill	John	Pankorst	Mercy
1724	Hills	John	Savage	Mary

The Hill/Pankorst marriage shown here appears to be the one used for the "Guilielmus" line. But as can be seen here, there is a Hills/Goldwell marriage that better accounts for the occasional confusion between "Golding" and "Golwell" in some of Robert Hills's children (Rebecca 1781 and George 1784). The clerks may have remembered that Robert's own mother was a Goldwell.

These are our apparent relatives in the Maidstone Freemen List, with dates Freed. Most got it by Patrimony: one was apprenticed to his father. *** marks our ancestors.

Robert Golding Hills***, 31 Jul 1841, by Patrimony;
Thomas William Hills, 17 Jul 1839, by Patrimony;
George Hills, 20 Oct 1815, eldest son of Robert Golding Hills, late Waterman;
Thomas Hills, 17 Sep 1811***, younger son of Robert Golding Hills, Bargebuilder;
William Hills, 16 Jul 1791, younger son of Robert Hllls, Waterman;
Charles Hills, 29 Aug 1788, younger son of Robert Hills, Waterman;
Thomas Hills, 5 Apr 1784, younger son of Robert Hills, Bargebuilder;
John Hills, 4 Oct 1782, younger son of Robert Hills, Bargebuilder;
Robert Golding Hills***, 8 Aug 1778, eldest son of Robert Hills, Bargeman;
Joseph Hills, 27 Oct 1775, apprenticed to his father Robert Hills, Bargebuilder;
Edward Hills, 13 Jun 1753, younger son of John Hills;
Robert Hills, 13 Jun 1753***, second son of John Hills;
John Hills, 9 Apr 1739, eldest son of John Hills, Blacksmith;

Then come three candidates for Robert's father:
John Hills, 11 Oct 1714, eldest son of Jonathan Hills;
John Hills, 10 Oct 1714, eldest son of John;
John Hills, 10 Oct 1714, eldest son of Joseph.

Which of these is "our" John you can decide for yourself!

There is a problem with Robert and Edward in 1753. There was an Edward born to John Hills but he was born in 1725 and is thus *older* than Robert, who was born in 1727. EITHER they aren't related OR the clerk got their details confused so Edward is actually the 2nd son and Robert the younger.

Hills's Pasage went between the two buildings immediately north of the White Horse Inn. See attached. The brown box is the White Horse Inn (now 46 London Rd). The pink one is where Thomas William and his mother Mary Jane (who was also RGH's mother) lived. The green boxes are the cottages.

I am sure I do here in the D.C are. I will do some checking around and keep you in the loop as to what they have to say. We have the National library about 35-40 min. away.With Historians. I do know that NEHGS in Boston (About 5 hrs away)has several Hills items pertaining to Joseph Hills in their collection.It might be of some interest to them.If not I will keep it in my care and plan on having it sealed and preserved.

What do I do just take it to them? I know the major one in D.C is fairly close,but it will be hard to part company with it. It's kind of like my treasure,however I want to keep it preserved so others can see it. I will have to think about that one.Maybe I will email someone down there and see what they have to say, I just don't want it to fall into the wrong hands.I was thinking about that the other day.My girls are still young and we are still busy, I don't want it to get mixed in with things. I sent to my parents for some time for safe keeping with our move and everything and they brought it back to me a few months back.I will see about contacting someone.

'

I do have an original Hills family Association book.It is in very delicate condition it was published in 1899 and an original flyer that was mailed out to the different Hills family asking for all information. The small delicate book is bound with thread. I want to get it scanned to share with all of you and take it to get it Prof. preserved. It's so old.I came about it a few years ago from a dealer back east,I was surprised when it had shown up with an extra added bonus , the Hills Association flyer. However I am nervous about any handling of it to scan or anything else. It is in wonderful condition but the binding is showing it's age and the coloring of the pages have yellowed a great deal. any suggestions??

Marie

At the moment I am working on the assumption that Hugh Hillis was the first to go. He was the son of Captain David Hillis. The family were from Banbridge, Co.Down[about 8 miles from me]in a very beautiful area with views to the Mountains of Mourne.
Please give me any relevant details you may have and I promise to follow up your query.
My mother is a Hillis who was born in Co.Mayo and her father and his other children were mostly born in Wexford.
Do keep in touch.

Helen Black

Marie- Once in a great while an original copy of Hills Family In America shows at ebay. Last one of the original 1,500 copies sold for over $500.

I bought #4 of the even rare original Descendants of Samuel Hills the 1957 work by Holman for $65 some years ago. The Cd is available for next to nothing. That one hasn't made google's library yet.

What I would like to get my hands on are all the reports of the original Hills Family Association. The Family History folks are missing about 5 of them.

Marie- The problem with many historical items is that they are fairly common - the family bibles. So local historical societies don't want them because of lack of room and care of the item issues..

The Hills Family annual reports are pretty rare. The Family History Centers have about 6 of them in their Utah collection which is why I think your item would be of interest their.

NEGHS has had a fair collection of Hills Family materials in their storage over the years. I believe there is still a Hills Reading Room there.

The Oregon Genealogical Forum accepts donations and has several of the Hills reports in the collection.

Amherst college has a Hills archive- Leonard Mariner Hills family partly endowed Amherst- and there is crossover with the Emily Dickinson collection.

You can call the library archives folks or check with the local historical society. Perhaps, if they are unable to tell you about preservation or willing to add the item to their collections, some referrals might be given for an archivist or restorer?

Do you have a rare book collector in your area- another resource?

Thank you for posting this information. This young hero is my cousin's son. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the visitation and funeral on July 3 and 4, 2009. What a beautiful show of support from that community! Even though it was pouring down rain during the funeral procession, the streets were lined with cars, people and flags. Many people didn't even have umbrellas, and they still stood out there to show their love and respect to our family. Very touching!
sorry it's taken me so long. haven't been researching in quite awhile. My GG George William Hills was born in Hartfield, Sussex, around 1855. It's also referenced in the records as Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and Withyham, Sussex. I found a George that coordinated with the dates and places, also a continuing thread of working as a groom and domestic coachman. His parents' names were George and Sarah. Don't know if they are my relations. My GG George Wm. died in Eastbourne in November of 1920. Distant relations maybe. There are so many Hills! cathie

Sorry for sounding so short...I apologize for that...I would love to communicate with you..the Hills family comes quite a ways down into my more "recent" ancestry. I actually spend some time every summer in Swanzey NH camping but I've never had a moment to spend exploring graveyards...this summer..I will.
Leslie
