I think the biography written by Anne Shankland is excellent too and I guess that is what you are referring to?
Would be very interested if you can add anything to my research?

Lesley.

I'm also a descendant of John Himbury and you might perhaps be interested to read the biography I wrote of him. You can read it at http://www.shankland.org.uk/JohnHimbury.pdf. The front page shows the drawing of him from the Winchester GreenJackets Museum.

Hi,
Thanks for getting in touch. Have you seen my website Himburyhistory.co.uk? I am effectively doing a onename study on the Himbury name. I would be very interested to see your branch of the tree.
John Himbury's medals can be seen at the Miltary Museum in Winchester and there is a portrait of him there as well, but I am not aware of any photos.
I have quite a lot of information on the Himburys and quite a lot of documents too. If I can help you with anything please let me know.
KInd regards,
Lesley.

Hi,
My link with the Himbury's is through my wife 2nd greatgrandmother Eliza Himbury she married Donald Mcleod in 1883, Eliza father was Alfred Churchill Himbury. It is fascinating to read about John Himbury , (on a strange coincident the chaplin for the Chelsea Pensioners in 1871 was John Deacon Massingham which is my wife's 3rd great grand uncle the two families merge in 1936)so he would of known John.
I would like know where I can view his medals are the in a museum or private hands are ther any photos of John?
regards
John
Hi Neil,
Good to hear from you. Thanks for getting in touch. Can you recieve a GEdCom file as I have the family tree and it is huge? The simplest way would be for me to send you the GedCom.I think we have spoken before. I have the himburyhistory website? The tree is on there too, but unfortunately it is not up to date as I have not had time to update it lately. Also, as it is now so large, people keep telling me that it is almost impossible to see it or navigate around it on there, so I need to do something about it when I have the time. Let me know about the Gedcom and I will happily supply you with what I have.(over 800 family members at the last count!)
Would be very interested in any info you have too. I have heard about the Churchill connection. Several of my direct line ancestors had the Churchill name as a middle name. Someone also told me of a family tradition that we are related to the Stuart Kings, so a possible Royal connection! No luck in proving that so far, but you never know!
Kind regards,
Lesley.

Hi,
My maiden name was Himbury. I am trying to map the whole Himbury family tree and would be interested to hear from anyone with the Himbury name in their family. Please have a look at my website www.himburyhistory.co.uk . If I can help anyone out with their research, I have lots of Himbury info already, but am always looking for more, particularly more recent family members (1900 - ) and any in USA, Australia, or anywhere else in the world. I believe all the Himburys in the world are one family and am on my way to proving it. Any help in this respect would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Lesley Oliver (nee Himbury)

I have recently started researching my Himbury ancestry. My maiden name is Himbury. I noticed you mention the Churchill Himbury name and wondered whether you have managed to find out where the Churchill name came from as i think my great grandad was a Churchill (Alfred Churchill I think, but still waiting to get this confirmed) Any information you have would be very much appreciated.

Oh yes please! I am very new to this research and am finding my way very tentatively so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
When I was about 11 years old I can remember doing 2 weeks of research at St Catherine's House(?) with my father Charles and my uncle Albert, but my uncle kept all the paperwork. My father passed away quite a few years ago and I have lost touch with my uncle so I have to start again. I do remember that they discovered an ancestor with a miliatary record who had been awarded medals and I think he was buried in Woolwich(?) cemetary. I am really interested in trying to find out where the Himbury name originated as it seems to be uncommon. I will be extremely grateful for any info that you are happy to share!
Regards,
Lesley

Looks like we're distant cousins! Your Alfred Churchill Himbury was the brother of my Matilda Churchill Himbury, who was my great-great-grandmother.

I haven't yet identified the Churchill connection but there are two clues I'm keeping in mind, both equally unlikely but still fun to investigate. One is that since Alfred and Matilda's father was a soldier in the Peninsular Wars he might well have admired John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, sufficiently to name his children after him. The other is that there is a family tradition that we're descended from the Stuart kings, either Charles II or James II (who were brothers), and indeed Arabella Churchill (sister to John C above) was a mistress to James II and bore him several sons.
We may never know but as I say it's quite fun to speculate - although I don't relish the thought of being related to the Stuarts.

I have Alfred Churchill Himbury's birth certificate if this is of interest to you, plus census entries etc. for the Himbury family. Let me know if you'd like copies of these. And of course I have the account of their father John Himbury's military exploits in the Peninsular War, and even a photograph of his medals - and himself!
Hi Anne,

Thank you for your response. I think I might have added a few more typos myself when I read the text again the next day! It was late at night when I finished retyping it.

My father is still alive, although 86 and quite frail. He may be able to answer some questions. If you are collecting information on the Himbury family, we would both be really very grateful for a copy of what you have found.

Attached picture of my Grandad, Thomas Himbury, taken in Dover Castle tunnels during the War. He is the man seated in the centre of the picture surrounded by Wrens! Presumably he was in the Admiralty section. We lived near Dover for many years and used to go on visits to the castle often. I believe the photograph is no longer available as the canvas it was printed on rotted very quickly in the constant humid air and English Heritage never replaced it. I asked them if they had the original, but received no answer. My mother never knew where he was stationed at the time, just that he would come home on leave with boxes of blackberries! I do have a larger jpg file of a scanned photograph I took at the time.

Regards, David Bettie
Dear Anne, Thank you for your email. At the moment I do not seem to be able to lay my hands on that article. I wanted to show it to my wife.

It was only a typed out copy of a newspaper article and it appealed for generosity for his widow and family to support them. Very hard times.

If I come across it, and I will look again, I promise I will send it to you.

My grandfather was Thomas Himbury, whose quite well-to-do family was from Plumstead. He married a girl from Canning Town and they had three children Marion, (my mother), Alice and Jack. Thomas Himbury was in the Navy during both wars and served on the trans-Atlantic conveys. He also served in the Dover tunnels, and I have a photograph of him at his desk. I recognised him on a visit there when we lived in Kent! I could send you a jpg of it if you wish.

Regards, David Bettie.

My grandmother was Beatrice E Himbury and died around 1990 aged 102. All we know is that she lived most/all of her life in (South) London (married a Steel) and may have had earlier connections with Sherbourne, Dorset. Can you cast any light?

David, that is so kind of you and I'm really grateful!

I'm also rather gratified to see I'm descended from such an illustrious warrior. And I see that you and I are related too!

I'm intrigued by the tone of the obituary. It was obviously in a local journal of some kind and it even sounds as if it could have been in a church magazine or something of the kind -- it has that flavour. I don't suppose you know where it came from?

Would you have any objection to my using it in a couple of enquiries I thought of making? I'm a member of the Woolwich and District FHS and their last magazine had a picture of a Mission Hall at Plumstead on it, which made me wonder whether this was the origin of the obit. Also I've recently been reading a couple of books, "A Dorset Soldier" and "A Dorset Rifleman", both dealing with private/NCO soldiers from Dorset who took part in the Peninsular Wars, and both edited by Eileen Hathaway, so I thought I might write to her about my Dorset rifleman/soldier!

You say that your grandfather Thomas was a nephew of John Himbury the soldier. This intrigues me as I don't know any brothers of John Himbury who could have been the father of Thomas. Perhaps we should exchange all the details we have of our Himbury ancestry -- probably off-line from this message board? If you like I'll collect up what I have and send it to you. I warn you I do have some little mysteries I'd love to see cleared up!

My Himbury connection is a lot further back - my great-great-grandmother was Matilda Churchill Himbury. I've always been intrigued by the Churchill name given to her as this seems to have been significant in family stories and I've recently discovered it was given to her brother as well. I think her father John Himbury was the person you referred to as being the one who served under Wellington against Napoleon, so I'd be really interested in your newspaper article - what newspaper was it from?
Sad to hear of your loss last year.

My mother's maiden name was Himbury. She died this year of Alzheimer's. She was the daughter of Thomas and May Himbury. He lived in Plumstead when younger and was in the Royal Navy for may years and served in both Wars and was on the Atlantic conveys as a Yoeman Signaller. I also have a photograph of him serving in the Dover Castle tunnels. He lived in Dagenham, Essex for many years and died about 1970. I would be glad to hear of other information to pass on to my father who is now 86.
I have a copy somewhere of the txt of a newspaper article relating to an earlier member of the Himbury family who served under Wellington against Napeleon.
