Hi Eric, yes I do remember you and I speaking on the telephone several years ago, at that time I had no idear who my ancestors were, so I just put everthing I came across on Hymel [Himel] lines, in my files, have quite a lot of names in my tree, about 40 thousand names with information, so I do try to helf others if I can, so I am just filling in lateral branches. To my amazement two of David Himel Sr's children Pierre Himel Sr. is my gggg-granfather on my grandfathers side and Sebastien Himel is my gggg-granfather on my grandmothers side. This has been a great passtime for me.

Bobbie Hymel Wade

Dear Bobbie,
The difference is spelling is because of the French to American translation. The age is correct, Amy was born in 1869 and depending on the how fast the census information was compiled and published would reflect the age of Aimee in the the census ledger.
In reference to the census locations in 1880 census it is of my opinion that in 1880 Lovincy was working on and living on Laurel Valley Plantation. I haven't had the chance to find records verifying this at this time.
Lovincy and Josephine's Children
1. Lola
2. Joseph Elvaine (J.E.)
3. Ulysse Paul
4. Rosalie Aloise
5. Nichols Raphael
6. Francois Louis (died within 3 years of age)
7. Edavy EDwin
8. Aimee
9. Charles
Children of Lovincy and Carmelite
1. Lovincy Francois
2. Edee
3. Marie Angelina
4. Adolph
5. Marie Eliska
6. Rebellia
7. Vileor
Some of the children of Lovincy and Carmelite were baptized Faite and some Himel. The last child produced from this union was born about 1862. (Joseph Vileor) He was christened on May 22, 1875. He died Jan. 17, 1930 in White Castle. I spoke with his granddaughetr some years ago and was told of him or his family taking the train to Donaldsonville for Carmelite's funeral. She told me that Carmelite ecked out an existence by being a "treator".
In past years I had communicated with a great grandson of
Carmelite who has since passed on.

Regards,
Erik

Thank you very much for your reply, and the corrections I had found the information about Amy in 1880 Lafourche Parish, La. Census. Who were the children of Loviny and Carmelite, and who were the children of Lovincy and Josephine? It has been a bit confussing.

1880 Lafourche Parish, La. Census:
Lovincy Himel age 49
Josephine age 45
Nicolas Himel, son age 16
Edwin Himel age 12
Amy Himel age 9 [Who was this Amy?]
Charles Himel age 4

Thanks,
Bobbie Hymel Wade

Re: Himel/Landry

Hi Bobbie,
I have some corrections for you. Lovincy's daughter (Aimee) was born May 10, 1869. She was married to T.X. Landry. She had no sister named Amy born in 1860. Lovincy was born May 29, 1831 as stated by him in the census of 1900. The Hebert books have him listed as Jean Marie. Why? I can only think that Jean Marie is what was heard by the priest, sounded like Lovincy.
Lovincy was never married to either Carmelite or Josephine.
By the church or civilly. In the census of 1900 he looked upon his union with Josephine as marriage and is stated as being married for 50 years.
I have a letter my Mora Himel Lincoln who interviewed many who knew Lovincy. She stated that his name was never to be mentioned in their households. Mora said that Lovincy accused Carmelite of running around on him while he was away during the Civil War and that the youngest child was not his. This was the dissolving of their relationship. I also knew Edmond Himel from New Orleans who had done extensive genealogy work on the Himel family. He thought Lovincy was the "most colorful character of the family".
When he died he had just been reelected as Assumption Parish Police Juror.
His will listed no legitimate heirs. Everything to his nephews and nieces.
Josephine had inherited a large amount of money, for the time, from her grandfather. She bought Palestine plantation for Lovincy and helped many of the sons in business ventures. I am not a lawyer, but I believe that him listing no legitimate heirs was to protect Josephine's investments from Carmelite's family. Carmelite is buried in Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Donaldsonville. I visit the grave often.
I have yet to find Lovincy's. His death notice says he was buried in the family tomb. This would be the large tomb up towards the front of the graveyard which Edmond had rebuilt.
In Josephine's tableau it states that money ($115) was spent for a tomb to be built. This was quite a sum of money in 1912. I still can not find her grave.
Josephine was not a Foret. Her name was Josephine Antoinette Boudreaux.

Lovincy died March 9, 1906.
On Aug. 19th 1907, my gggrandmother Josephine drew up "Legitimation Papers" for her 8 children stating how she and Lovincy first cohabited in 1850. She was 15 years old.
The sins of Lovincy must have run deep. My father visited Aimee around the end of WWII. They talked about the family.
But any particulars about this conversation was lost when my dad was killed in an automobile accident.
I am still finding relatives around the country. Some of Lovincy's sons were "chips off the old block". Some deserted their families and their names also were not allowed to be spoken.(sad)
Take Care,
Erik
In my files I have a Aimee Himel [Hymel] born May 5, 1860 in Labadeville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, who married a Telesma Landry, I have no dates on Telesma, Aimee Himel was the daughter of Captain Lovincy Himel, born abt. 1832 in Labadeville, La., married to Carmelite Faite she was baptized Feb. 13, 1831 Thibodeaux, La. Lafourche Parish, Aimee had a sister Amy Himel born about 1869 in Assumption Parish, La. There were 12 children born to Lovincy Himel, he was also married to Josephine Foret Boudreaux born about 1838.

Hope this helps, and I welcome any corrections.

Bobbie Hymel Wade

I would like very much to know their other children and the dates on David Hymel Sr. and Marianne Schantz. Would you happen to have any info on the immigrations to Louisiana? Have you looked to see if any of these men were in the Louisiana militia rosters during the American Revolution? I would love to be DAR.
Thanks,
Kim

Antonise and various other Hymels

My gg grandmother was Antonise Hymel, wife of Francois St. Pe'. She had to have been born in the early 1800s. Some date my great grandfather's birth in 1848 or 1850. If my father is correct that his father was 50 when he was born and his grandfather was 50 when his father was born, that would put his birth as far back as 1838, which would mean Antonise (his mother) was born sometime before 1814 or 1815.

I have other Hymels that are related to my family if not to me directly...
Sydney Hymel b. October 16, 1891 in Vacherie, LA., d. January 26, 1956 in Luling, LA.
He married Helene Cleona Esneault and they had 4 children:
Jules Joseph Hymel
Loyda Mary Hymel
Marc Antony Hymel
Marie Ann Hymel

Helene Cleona Esneault was the dau. of Jules Maxililien Esneault and Laura Bienvenu married October 01, 1884. Helene was the 7th of 8 children born to them. I have more on their ancestry, but sadly lack any ancestors of Sydney Hymel. It would be nice to link them up to Antonise Hymel, somehow.

I also have a Marie Adele Hymel that married Florian A. Tassin and gave birth to Edmonia Marie Tassin about 1872.
I have a number of Edmonia's descendants, but none of her grandparents.

If you have any info/leads on these names, please email me at the address linked to my name above.

Thanks,
Todd St. Pe'

Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. has a genealogy
library and Lake Charles, La. has a genealogy library. There is a book by Olga Laurent that has a section on the Himels or Hymels at both places. The Himels in Louisiana lived first in Edgard, La. in St. John the Baptist Parish ...David Himel (Immel). The Lake Charles library is opened all week, even on Sundays. Sundays is from 1:30-5:30PM. Some Himels moved to Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne.
Meyer, i believe to be Marie Marceline Himel], Elizabeth Duffy, age 11 and Frederick Meyer, age 2.

In 1870 New Orleans Census i find Frederick Meyer, age 12, living with Jacob Klees a undertaker, born in Prussia.

In 1850 La Marriage Index, I Found Jean Meyer, married Azelie Rousseaux Oct. 27, 1846. in Assumption Parish, La., Azelie Rousseaux must have died, and Jean married Marceline Himel, this may be the connection to why the Rousseaux's had Elizabeth Duffy in 1870.

I have nine children for Pierre Hymel [Himel] 2nd and Catherine Conrad, one of them was Adele, but did not have Marceline, but thought she had to be their daughter, because of Adolphine living in their household in 1860 Census. Pierre Hymel 2nd was born May 27, 1794 in Edgard, St. John Baptist Parish, La., was still living in the 1870 Assumption Parish, La. Census. Pierre 2nd Hymel married Catherine Conrad Feb. 3, 1812 in Edgard St. John Baptiste Parish, La., she was born Nov. 25, 1787 Edgard St. John Baptiste Parish, La., she was still living 1n the 1870 Assumption Parish Census, Pierre Hymel Jr. was the son of Pierre Hymel Sr., born Mar 5, 1758 German Coast St. Charles Parish La., died Sep. 25, 1817 in Edgard, La. St. John Baptist Parish, married Feb. 24, 1788 in Edgard, La. to Catherine Juno [Bellegarde], born abt. 1768 died aft 1835. Catherine Conrad was the daughter of Henry Conrad Sr., born abt. 1857 in Edgard, La. St. John Baptiste Parish and died Jan. 22, 1793 in Edgard, La.he married Apr. 4, 1785 in Edgard, La. to Catherine Jacob, do not have birth or death dates for Catherine Jacob. Pierre Hymel Sr. was the son of David Hymel Sr. and Marianne [Marie Ann] Schantz, i also have dates on them if needed.

Thanks you again for the information, it is so wonderful when someone shares, how else will we solve these mysteries. I do have more information if you need it. If you need names of Catherine Conrad and Pierre Hymel's other children.

Bobbie Hymel Wade

I posted this a few days ago, but was not logged in, so I guess I'd better give it another shot (can't seem to find what happened to the other one. Erased?)

I was wondering if anyone has any imformation on Mr. Harvey North, identified in The Assumption Pioneer (June 7,1902) as a New Yorker who purchased St. Martin plantation in partnership with (my great-great-great grandfather) Drauzin Himel.

Also, information on Drauzin's son (from his first marriage to a Miss Terrebonne), Adolphe, would be nice to have.

Re: Marceline Himel

Hi Bobby,
From what I can figure out Marie Marceline Himel was the daughter of Pierre Himel and Catherine Coutratte. She was a twin because South Louisiana Records show both her and her sister named Helene Adelina Himel born 27 June 1823 to Pierre Himel and Catherine Coutratte.
Then Louisiana Marriages to 1850 on Ancestry.com shows John Duffy married Marie Marceline Hymel 18 Jan 1849 in Assumption Parish. Must has been a civil marriage.
The US Federal Mortality Schedule Index 1850 shows a John Duffil died in Assumption Parish at age 27 in the month of Aug. He was born in Maryland and had been a farmer. He died of an accident.
The 1850 US census of Assumption Parish shows the household of the Widow John Duffil age 25, Adolphine Duffil age 2 and Elizabeth Duffil age 1. I am assuming that something happened to Marie Marceine Himel Duffil sometime between 1850 and 1860 because in the 1860 US census of Assumption Parish there is Dolphine Duffy age 12 living in the houshold of Pierre and Catherine Hymel, age 72 and 73 respectively, who should have been her grandparents. Elizabeth Duffy, age 11 we can find living in the houshold of Jean and Marie M. Meyer.
Then the Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records 1868-1870 Volume 11 shows Adolphine Duffy (Jean Duffy and Marie Himel) m. 27 April 1868 Nicholas Duffy.
This is my line. I hope this helps. I haven't been able to come up with any more info on Pierre Himel and his wife Catherine Coutratte. If you can tell me any more I sure would appreciate it.
