His father wasBenjamin Hinkley, and his mother's maiden name was PollyMoshier. The former was a native of Seneca County, N. Y. , andthe latter was also born in the Empire State. Both weredescended from English stock, and belonged to early New Yorkfamilies, and both, when in their early youth, went with theirparents to Ohio, settling on what was known as the WesternReserve. There they were married, and there passed all theirmarried life, though they removed from Lake County to HuronCounty, where the husband died. Later the wife came toWisconsin, and passed the remaining years of her life with herson and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hinkley. The latter wasone of twelve children who grew to mature years, eight of whomare now living. Austin Hinkley was born at Centerville, LakeCounty, Ohio, February 1, 1826. Very early in 1841, when in hisfifteenth year, he came to the Territory of Wisconsin, accompanying his brother-in-law, William Tucker, and family, whosettled in the town of Brookfield, then Milwaukee County, nowWaukesha County. At the age of nineteen years Mr. Hinkley wentto Fond du Lac County, where he worked for a time at the tradeof carpenter and joiner, returning, however, the same season tohis friends in Waukesha County. The following year he went toOhio to visit his father's family, but returned to this State, living alternately here and there until his marriage. Thatimportant event in his life occurred in his native State, July4, 1853, the lady of his choice being Miss Eliza St. John, whowas born in Rensselaerville, Albany County, N. Y., December 21,1829. Her parents were John Wesley and Eliza E. (Carpenter) St.John, who were natives of the same State, of Welsh ancestry.Mrs. Hinkley's parents removed to Cuyahoga County, Ohio, whenshe was an infant of six months. Many years later they removedto Ionia, Michigan where the father died, and the mother, likethe mother of Mr. Hinkley, spent the last years of her life atthe home of the latter. Mr. and Mrs. St. John were the parentsof twelve children, seven of whom grew to mature years. Theeldest, Jane, died at the age of nine years, and the youngest,Mary, at the age of four years. Mr. and Mrs. Hinkley came toSheboygan County in the fall of 1854, and located at what isknown as Spring Farm, in the town of Mitchell but a year laterremoved to Lyndon Township and about three years later settledwhere they now live. They have two children, a daughter and ason. Marietta was born September 11, 1857 and is now the wifeof Charles E. Radder of the town of Mitchell. They have twochildren, Alma E. and Owen. The only son of Mr. and Mrs.Hinkley, Fred W., was born January 4, 1860 and wedded MissBeulah Tupper, of the town of Lima. They have three children:Austin C., Nina M. and Fred Shelden. Mr. and Mrs. Hinkley losttheir eldest child, Ormal R., at the age of seven years, andanother, Lucien A.; both died of diphtheria the same week. Mr.Hinkley and his wife are numbered among the respected citizensof the town of Mitchell. He came to Wisconsin Territoryfifty-two years age when the greater part of what nowconstitutes on the important States in the Union was wilderness. He and his wife have together endured the hardships that areinseparable from pioneer life, and have always endeavored toperform the duties that devolved upon them in faithful andconscientious manner. In addition to the responsibilities oftheir own immediate family, they cared for their mothers intheir declining years. Mrs. Hinkley's mother was for many yearsan invalid, and required almost constant attention, and thatduty was most faithful performed by Mr. and Mrs. Hinkley. Theconsciousness of having done their duty, as they say it, throughlife is their reward. *James Hinkle received a copy of thisarticle from cousin Richard A. 1913 January newspaper obituary - AN HONORABLE LIFE CLOSED - Mr.Austin Hinkley, the venerable pioneer, closed his eyes in sleepon Thursday morning, January 30, 1913 in his late home inMitchell that has been his abode for fifty-seven years. His son, Fredarrived in time to see him alive. Mrs. Hinkley and Mr. and Mrs.Charley Radder and Fred did all they could to make his lifepleasant. He was kind to his friends and neighbors and a lovinghusband and father and it is doubtful if a man could be calledfrom the community that was more highly respected. Mr. Hinkley was born February1st, 1826, in Ohio, united in marriage on July 4th, 1853, camewith his wife to Wisconsin in 1855 and settled in Mitchell on afarm which has been their home ever since.
