Angie,

I had replied to Michael 5 years ago, but don't think I left my email address for him, so I don't know if her ever attempted to contact me. My dad is Emmit Hipps, brother to Hoyt Hipps. My email address is ksroadking@gmail.com if anyone wants to know any info I may have. My info is somewhat limited so I may be of no help. But I do have a birth/death certifate of my grandfather Hipps along with the marriage certificate to him and his wife Laura. Feel free to contact me
Steven Hipps

Hello. My name is Joan Hipps. My Dad's name was Joe Hipps. He had siblings on of which was named Jerome Hipps. Jerome had a son named Jerome who had twin girls named Ayana and Ayinke. I am told that they reside in Philly. Also, I have found that Jerome Jr. is a record producer. I have not been able to get in touch with them. My Dad always told me he was born in Starr, SC. I don't know if this is close to Orangeburg County. However the family names are sure a coincidence. We may be related. I have been trying to find info on my Dad's family for quite a while. This may be another avenue to explore. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your time.

Have you been able to trace this line? I've just begun my search and I am looking for information on the George Hipps line that descended from John George Hipps (born before 1740 and died in 1802 in Burke Co., NC).

I have some notes (from many years ago) that John George may have been Hans Georg Hipp that came over on the ship Ann Galley that arrived in PA on 9/23/1752. The Ann Galley came from Rotterdam.

I do not have notation of where the info was obtained from.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Amanda

George, apparently the secured .mil email I use is a little TOO secure. My Yahoo works though. Thanks for the heads up.

About Ruth's Tarheelborn site, it's wonderful. I've gotten much information from it. This time I was trying to send some pics to Ruth and now, talking with you, I'm wondering if I'd sent them to you. If I didn't send them to you, then I ment to. Let me know. They were of Oscar Mackswain and Rose Anna's resting place.

Picking around the Baggett side (Oscar's wife, Rose Anna Baggett) I've stumbled across some pretty good leads that I've already presented to the Sons of the American Revolution. The gentleman I showed them to sounded pretty optimistic and an application is currently being put together. If you're interested in Rose Anna's line check out BAGGETTHISTORY.COM There's a confirmed line going back to Rose Anna's gggGrandfather with the possibility of 2 more generations.

Gary
Tom was the youngest child of this family.
There are at least 38 great-grandchildren and I don't know how many great-great-grandchildren.

I'm not quite sure where all my genealogy paperwork is because I moved from Georgia to North Carolina about three months ago and haven't unpacked all of the boxes.
Gary,
I am a great-grandaughter of Oscar McSwain Hipps. My grandfather was Marion Clements Hipps.
My info is as follows:
Oscar was born June 17, 1849 and died October 10, 1919. According to a newspaper article that have somewhere, Oscar was hit by a switch engine at a railroad freight yard where he worked and died shortly thereafter. This occurred on one of his last days at work just before he retired.
Oscar is buried in Elmwood Cemetary in Birmingham, Alabama.
Oscar married twice. First to Nannie Jane Whitmire. They had two children: Jefferson Lee Jackson Hipps and Emma Agnes Hipps.
Uncle Lee (this is what my mother called him) later moved to Seattle, WA and died there.
Emma Agnes married Henry A. Ward and remained in Georgia.
Nannie Jane Whitmire died 2/20/1886 and is buried in Flint Hill Cemetary in Hiram, GA
Oscar's second wife was Rose Annah Baggett.
She was born August, 1861 and died Feb. 5, 1939.
She is also buried in Elmwood Cemetary in Birmingham.
They had six children:
1. Lucille (lived less than a week)
2. Frank Morgan b - October 14, 1890, d October 14, 1913
3. Marion Clements (MC) b July 18, 1893, d April 15, 1987. Buried in Elmwood Cemetary. MC married Lola Hawkins -- 9 children (one died in infancy)
4. Henry Hawthorne b March 17, 1896, d November 4, 1898
5. Joe Maddox January 23, 1899 - May 21, 1970
6. Lottie Cobb August 12, 1901 - April 21, 1985

Andrew Jackson Hipps and Mary Jane Atcheson, as you know, were Oscar's parents. They are both buried in Flint Hill Cemetary in Hiram, GA. I have some pictures of them. Also, I have AJ's military records and Mary Jane's widow's pension records as well as pictures of them.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
Ruth.

Gary,

The Bible records states his name is Osker Mackswain Hipps and was born 17 June 1849. We know that he was born in Newberry Co. SC. He married 1] Nannie Jane Whitmere 17 May 1874 in Cobb Co. GA. and had two children Emma Agnes Hipps and Jefferson Lee Jackson Hipps.

Then Oscar married 2] Rose Anna Baggett 12 Aug 1888 in Cobb Co. GA [both of these marriages were obtained by me at Cobb Co. GA courthouse]. They had several children-three of which died young Frank Morgan Hipps, Lucille Hipps and Henry Hawthorne Hipps.

The children that reached adulthood were:
Marion Clements Hipps
Joe Maddox Hipps
Lottie Cobb Hipps

The only information that I have on Joe Maddox Hipps is that he married 1] Fannie Mae Haynes and had children Joe, Bob, Peggy, and Jack Thomas Hipps [d. 18 May 1932 Birmingham, Ala].

The name was Hipp [no s] but after they moved to GA they added on the "s".

Do you have pictures or more information on Joe Maddox Hipps? I would really appreciate it. I have publisted a book on the NC Hipps and one day will do the SC Hipps. I have been fighting cancer the last two years but now am feeling much better.

When I get home, then will send you a copy of the Bible record. Our county did a Heritage book in 1999 and I wrote a long article on Andrew Jackson Hipps and his family. If you are interested, I can tell you how to buy a copy [from the genie society].

Write me at KSFarms@aol.com

Sandra

James Gideon Hipps was the son of Nathan Robinson Hipps and was born 30 Nov 1846 and died 16 Aug 1927 in Jackson Co. NC. He is buried in the Olivet Cemetery in Jackson Co. NC.

I have written a book on all the NC Hipps and it includes James G. Hipps with his wife and all his children and many of his grandchildren. It even includes a picture of James G. Hipps in his Confederacy uniform.

The book is hardback, almost 1,000 pages long, full of pictures and stories, indexed. It has all the NC Hipps/Hipp families up until after the 1930 censuses.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy, write me at KSFarms@aol.com

Sandra

Thanks Ruth. After posting what I did about the death of Oscar I came across the obituary/newspaper article that tells of his accident with the switch engine. Perhaps the story told to me by my grandfather was of another family member. My grandfather wanted to say that Frank, Oscar's son, was killed by a trolly (switch engine maybe?) in Birmingham so perhaps he got the two stories confused.

I've requested from Jefferson County the name of the cemetary where Oscar was buried but have yet to hear from them. Since in work in Birmingham I'll go look up Elmwood Cemetary when I get home (I'm currently TDY in Germany for a couple of more weeks.) I also plan on making a trip to Georgia to see both Flint Hill Cemetary and the Paulding County Heritage Book, as they're less than 2 hours away from my home.

What is your link to Marion? My grandfather, Bob, had to live with his uncle MC when his mother died. It seems that Joe Maddox continued to work but had his 2 sons and one daughter live with MC when Joe's wife Fannie died sometime in the '30's. I have better info/dates at home but that's the jest of it. I know that my grandfather would like to know which of his first cousins were still living.

How much trouble would it be for me to get a copy of the service records/pension/photos of Andrew Jackson? Those are a few items I'd love to take a look at. I know that I could get some of those at courthouses, etc. but the photos would be hard to find. Thanks and I hope to hear from you.

GHipps

Re: need sources for Oscar M Hipps

Hello Sandra,

Cousins, ehh? What a small world. Real quick here is where me and mine come into the picture.

According to various census' Oscar M married Rose Anna/Anna R Baggett in 1888 and had three sons and one daughter (Joe Maddox, Frank M, Marion Clemons, and Agnes Hipps Ward, respectively.) Joe Maddox had three sons and one daughter but only one of the sons had any children, Robert Haynes Hipps (my grandfather). That makes Oscar my ggGrandfather. What about yourself? What path does your tree take after Andrew Hipps?

I BELIEVE that my Oscar married Anna Baggett after the death of his first wife Nannie Jane Whitmire. I believe that he and Nannie were married about 30 years when she died in 1886.

I'm hoping that we're talking about the same Oscar M Hipps. As I'm only a month into researching my (now possibly our) family there's still a lot I need to confirm. If you have any info/sources proving that MY Oscar M who was married to Anna R Baggett was indeed YOUR Oscar Hipps, the son of Andrew Jackson Hipps and Mary Jane Atchenson that would be wonderful.

I’m providing my email incase you need it for attachments, whatnot. Thanks in advance for any info that you can provide.

Perhaps one day I’ll be able to see the bible you mentioned. I’m curious as to how far back it goes and which branch it takes.

Gary Hipps
ghipps@gimail.af.mil
Sandra,

According to the Hipps bible, who all do you have listed as children of Oscar? I only have knowledge of Agnes E and Jefferson Lee Jackson from his first marriage to Nannie Jane and then Joe Maddox, Marrion Clemons, and Frank M through his second marriage to Anna R/Rose Anna. Also, there seems to be some confusion as to what year Oscar was born. Some census' state 1849 while others say as early as July 1847.

Here's a little family history told to me by my grandfather (Joe Maddox's son and Oscar's grandson) this past week.

*Oscar died on a Sunday while his family was inside getting ready to go to church. Every Sunday morning Oscar would go out to the porch and read his bible while the rest of the family got ready for church. Usually, by the time they were all dressed and ready he had finished his reading and had hooked up the horses to the buggy. This Sunday in particular the family noticed that the horses weren't hooked up to the buggy yet and they started to wonder why. That's when they found Oscar still on the porch with his bible still with him.

*Frank M , Oscar's son was killed by a street car/trolly in Birmingham but I'm not sure of the year.

*Joe Maddox Hipps had a daughter and 3 sons. The youngest of the three boys was killed in a kitchen accident around 1933 when he was about 2 years old.

Like I said, that's just a little more recent family history of Oscar's son's/grandson's. If you could provide info about Oscar's children and also clear up the birthyear, that would be great. Thanks in advance and I hope to hear from you.

Gary Hipps

Hipp/Hipps book (sandra)
Sandra,

I see that you have a NC-Hipp book available. I was also under the impression that you were working on a SC-Hipp(s) book as well but I can't seem to find the forum post where I might have read that. Any information about this book? As I may have told you earlier, I'm a direct descendent of Oscar M HIpps and I'm really interested in the SC side of our name.

The more I read about Hipp/Hipps, the more I see that others (including yourself) have been doing this same research for quite a while and have really made things easy for the rest of us. Thanks for all that ya'll have done. Let me know what you can about this SC book. Take care.

Gary HIpps

I couldn't find the email in my 'sent' folder nor can I remember much about it either. I may have been asking how much trouble it would be to get copies of info on Andrew Jackson out of the family bible (parents, grandparents+, anything from and before newberry SC, anything else). Obviously I'm also equally interested in learning about Oscar and either wifes as well.

I've only done my research from this site up to this point. I'm gonna start hitting the libraries/courthouses soon. I'm still just a month into this so I appreciate all of the info you and George have given me. It has helped me tremendously.

Enjoy Alaska. I've only spent a weekend there once with my wife. We landed/took off from Elmendorf AFB near Anchorage but we spent the weekend in a tent in Seward. Would really love to do what ya'll are doing.

Take care and thanks,

Gary

Also, I'll see what I can come up as far as photos for Joe Maddox go. I have several photos of my grandfather Bob and I also believe that there's a photo of Bob and Peggy together when Bob got married in 1952 ('1954?). I'm not sure about any pics of Joe jr and I'm sure there was never anything taken of little Jack. I'll try to come up with what little bit I can and you can deciede what you think you may need.

need sources for Oscar M Hipps

I'm looking to locate the parents of Oscar M Hipps. He was born in GA in July 1847 and married to Rose Anna/Anna R Baggett, all according to a June 1900 census. Anna may have been his 2nd wife with a Nannie Jane Whitmire being his first. Census also stated that his parents were born in SC. I BELIEVE his parents to be Andrew Jackson Hipps and Mary Jane Atchenson but have no sources to confirm this. Again, I'm trying to confirm the parents of Oscar M Hipps. Thanks in advance.

G
