Oh this is wonderful to have this information John- thank you so much for posting it. This solves a mystery for me that I have been wondering about since I was in my 20's and that was a very long time ago. I knew nothing about Rebecca's family of origin and tried to guess many times as to why she went by surnames Oldlum-Hipwell, or why my great grandmother had recorded her as such and now I know!!!!

I will write to you off this board as well.

Nora

Hi Nora,

Glad to hear from you. The following may fill in a few gaps.
You probably have most of the details, but if you want to go back further on the Hipwell side, please contact me sjenterprises@eircom.net

Rebecca Isabella Odlum youngest dau of Humphrey John Hipwell and Anna Madeline Odlum.
Humphrey John bapt 20/05/1846 Died 16/10/1922
Anna Madeline b circa 1850 Died 27/11/1915
Married 06/06/1887 @ St.Peters, Dublin They were double 1st
cousins.
Children:
1/Elizabeth Olive B 17/04/1873 died 24/05/1873
2/Humphrey(herbert) William B 14/10/1874 Married Rita xxxxx
circa 1903 in USA. Humphrey emigrated to USA 1893. He
was for some time an accountant.
3/Henrietta Eugenie B 28/07/1878 Married Geoffrey Kenyon
13/10/1913 in Christ Church, Galle Face, Colombo.
Henrietta died 04/05/1920 at Rebecca's house.
4/Elsie? b 1880?
5/William Odlum B 16/04/1882 D 25/12/1940
6/Humphrey John B 10/01/1884 D April 1938
7/Rebecca Isabella Odlum B 06/10/1887 Married Captain
Edward Arthur Palmer R.F.A. 15/07/1915 in the Mariners
Church in Kingstown(now called Dun Laoghaire). Her address
in 1920 was Ulster Lodge, Kildare.
There is a possibily of another son,Ivan, who is shown on
the tombstone of Humphrey & Ann. This could be a nickname
as I cannot find any Ivan in any of my records.
My late father recalls that the 2 brothers William Odlum &
Humphrey John were dwarfs.
I do hope that you find something of interest in the above.

Regards
John

One of my relatives Thomas Dudley b April 1, 1810 Mountrath Queens County married a Ann A Brian b 1808 Mountrath. They were married Anatrim Coolrain Laois. June 6, 1831. They named one of their sons William Hipwell Dudley and must have been related to the Hipwell Family. There are Hipwell Gravestones in the Old Anatrim Churchyard Coolrain, Laois.

Any relation?

Hi there - thanks for the contact.
Since I posted my original message I've managed to move on in my researches and have established that "my" Hipwells were in West Haddon (Northamptonshire) at the beginning of the 1800s - and it looks like they were there for at least two or three generations before then. My Thomas Hipwell (b.1810ish) left for London before the 1841 census, but returned to Belgrave to end his days. If you think your father may have any information in the light of the above I would love to hear from him or yourself, but otherwise I think we are probably researching two different lines of Hipwells.
Jenny

Hi Bev
I'm not sure I can help you with your query as there are no Elizabeth Hipwells in my lot that I am aware of - I've still not really got very far with them yet. "My" Thomas was born in West Haddon, Northants (I think), then spent some time in Leicester, married in Newington, Sussex, spent a lot of time in Bethnal Green, then returned to Leicester to die! Where his children ended up I'm not sure! I will keep my eye out though for your Elizabeth.

Re: Richard Hipwell/Jane Thompson

My Jane Thompson was the fourth child and second daughter of Joseph Thompson and Mary Fairbrother, born 20 June 1803, Upper Shrahane House, Queen's County, Ireland, according to church records. She first married Richard Hipwell. I have no information about Richard Hipwell. Perhaps he died early on since Marriage Licence Bonds of Ossory, Ferns & Leighlin, 1691-1845, shows an entry in 1832 for Jane Hipwell and Richard Graham of Rosenallis. I have no records of children born to either marriage.
So far to my knowledge there has not been any connection found between the Joseph Thompson family and the Abraham Thompson family.

Hipwell family in Australia

Hello there, by chance I came across this site. My name is Stephen Hipwell and I live in a coastal town south of the cuty of Melbourne, Victoria Australia. There are many Hipwell's in Victoria Australia. More Hipwell's in the Melbourne phone book than in the London phone book in the UK.
I was wondering if anyone had family links to Hipwells who emigrated from the UK around the 1880's. I know my family were millers in a place called Bourne, I think in Hertfordshire England. My side of the family left and settled in Redbank which is a small villagein Western Victoria. If anyone has information or would like information from me please email.
Cheers Stephen

Sorry - I don't have any info on the family you list so can't help you. In that timescale my direct line, to the best of my knowledge, had just moved to the East End of London so I don't think there is any connection with the ones you list. However, there may a link in earlier generations but I have yet to fully explore them.

Jenny

Does anyone recognize the name Isabell Odlum Hipwell?

My great Gran wrote in her name on family tree as wife of one of her brothers- Edward Arthur Palmer. Edward was born 1886 @ Sussex, England. The only Isabel I can find in 1891 census is Isabel Mary Hipwell living at Bedford, England born 1881 at Bedford, England, daughter of Thomas Collier Hipwell and Annie Bella Mary nee?

Great Gran wrote names of 3 children for Edward and Isabel as John, Rosemary and Dennis. I know that Edward was still alive in 1926 as he was mentioned in his father's obit. in England.

I have not been able to find any information these past several years and it is possible that Edward and isabell may have moved away from England at some point in time (or not).

Any help greatly appreciated. Great Gran only had two brothers and I am trying to find desc's who could work on family history with me.

I don't know the significance of the name Odlum- perhaps it is Isabelle's maiden name and she married a Hipwell prior to marrying Edward Palmer?

Thanks from Nora

Sorry for the confusion. I didn't mean to say that Joseph's parents were Abraham and Hester Thompson, nor his grandparents Abraham and Mary Ann Thompson. Rather, the men were HIPWELL and the women were both nee Thompson. The Thompson relationship with Richard would have been with the women not the men. It was poorly written...apologies.

Hi - My ggg grandfather Joseph Hipwell emigrated to Canada from Clonaslee, Queen's Co., Ireland. His parents were Abraham and Hester Thompson and his grandparents were Abraham Sr. and Mary Ann Thompson. His brothers (that I know of) were George Daniel, John Thompson and Samuel. Certainly there likely to be a link here. Samuel had a son Abraham (m. Ellen Power) who had a son Richard Senior Hipwell, but he was born in 1881 - too late. Let's compare notes.
