I'd love to exchange info and especially any photos you might have. I actually have scanned photos of Hiram Mansfield & Elam if you're interested.

Re: HIRAM's of Hawaii

Aloha E:

I hope this message reaches you both even though your messages are around six years old.

Emily Cecilia NU'UHIWA (HAILAMA) is my great-great-grandmother. She married Solomon David NU'UHIWA who I am named after (in a way, but my name is in Hawaiian and flipped around, Kawika Kolomona).

There has been a story in my family on the NU'UHIWA side that someone in the HAILAMA ohana during the time of my great-great-grandmother Emily, that essentially split the bloodlines on paper by changing their name from HAILAMA to HIRAM (the English translation of the former surname).

It wasn't passed down who did this because apparently it upset allot of people in the ohana and no one wanted to discuss it. Over time, this story has slowsly faded away to the point that no one is quite sure who changed the name.

We, in research for my great-aunty that I have conducted recently, I have deduced that her brother was Moses Kealoha HAILAMA Sr. due to their close proximity in age (five year's differences) and the fact that they were both born in the Kona area (which is where the Hailama family is from).

This would mean that my great-great-grandmother Emily was Moses Kealoha Hailama HIRAM (Jr.)'s aunt and that it was Moses (Jr.) that changed the name as my great-aunty remembers her grandmother Emily speaking of the name change, but wouldn't specify who did it.

Also, if you look closely at Moses (Jr.)'s children, he had a daughter named Emily Kanae Hirm. It is common practice in my ohana (especially on the NU'UHIWA and HAILAMA sides, to name someone after an aunty, uncle, great-aunty, or great-uncle. It is conicidental as well that this young lady was named Emily, the same name given to my great-great-grandmother.

Another clue to this mistery is that Moses Kealoha HAILAMA Sr. married Elena NAWAHINE. I know this to be a fact as my great-aunty and her sisters distinctly emember her being mentioned several times when the family (NU'UHIWA and HAILAMA) would talk story. Moses (Jr.) named one of his children Elena Kamakaeha HIRAM, the same name as his mother, providing another link between him and my great-great-grandmother.

Also, my great-aunty's sister in-law is a HIRAM, and it has always been speculated that these families were related if you talk story to the elders on this side of your ohana.

My cousin is searching for definitive proof through records in the islands so we can finally solve this.

I have an extensive tree containing over 1,540 individual names, 382 surnames, and 180 photos. This site has online been up and running for six weeks, but I have looped in twelve other members of the ohana from various branches who are helping build this. We are growing leeps and bounds every week and I would love for you to join us.

You can contact me directly at: kamakeeainaohana@yahoo.com

Hope to hear from you.

Mahalo and warmest aloha,

Kawika Kolomona Kamakeeaina

I have Hiram lines from both my grandparents on my dad's side. My grandma's uncle, Charles HOKE, married Moses HIRAM's daughter Eleanor Leihua Hiram. John HIRAM is from my grandpas side, I don't know if he was Emma's (my gggrandmother) Hanai father or stepfather. John was married to Manukeliikekulamanu. Emma's father was Samuel SMITH. I don't know if Manu was Emma's real mother or not. I found some John HIRAM's in directorys and census, but they are too young to be Emma's father, maybe they are brothers of her, I just don't know how to connect all these people.

Thank you, any insight he can give would be great. I was going over my genealogy program and I also have a Noah HIRAM, he was married to Agnes Haili Ana Lupua TING-SING. She was Charles HOKE's auntie. Charles' father changed his name from TING-SING to HOKE in the late 1800's, like Moses did. Are Noah and Moses brothers?

I gave the info to my father who is going to do a little research on John Hiram. He is well into geneolgy. On a side note, my father remembers Aunty Elenore and Charles Hoke. My grandfather was William Hiram, Moses's oldest son. It is intersting to see that we are related in a way.
Aloha
