Very interesting! Edward is a grandson of Johann Hirn, I think his father was Peter. (wasn't Edward a dentist?) I have heard this Jewish ancestry rumor from the Hirns in Escanaba before, but I have never researched the family outside of the US. My email is football@coloradoaggies.com if you wish to discuss more. I am interested in the Heidenheim part you have discovered.

My information is a little sketchy, but a relative of mine did go to Germany to research the family. My grandfather was Edward Michael Hirn (Escanaba, MI). If I am guessing correctly, he would be a son of Johann from his second wife, Maria. I was told that my relative went to the town of origin (Heidenheim I think). I was told that all of the Hirns there were buried in the synagogue cemetery, which would have made them Jewish. My grandfather and his family were all Catholic. There are no family stories about a change in faith, but I suppose there weren't too many places for Jews to worship in rural Wisconsin.

John Hirn's first wife was Barbara Mehring Hirn and they had five children between 1848 and 1857. Barbara died January 1, 1860 and John (aka Johann) married Maria Galles January 31, 1860. The had 13 children from 1861 to 1884. John Hirn died in 1891 and Maria Galles Hirn moved to Escanaba, MI to live with her children there; she died in 1917.

I have done little or no research on the Galles family as I am from the Mehring line of John Hirn's children.

Johann Galles - John Hirn Belgium, Ozaukee, Wisconsin

There are two familys Johann Galles family and John Hirn family. In the 1860 census it lists both families consecutively. In 1860 John Hirn is list as 40 years old and his wife Maria (Galles) is 19 years old. Children listed as Maria 12 years, Cacilia 10 years, Johann, 8 years, Margaretha 4 years, Franz Karl 2 years. It would appear that John Hirn had a previous wife who might have died in childbirth.

In the 1860 census Belgium, Ozaukee, Wisconsin Johnann Galles is 64 years and Margaretha 58 years. They are shown living with Anna Maria Galles 22 years and Maria 7 months. I’m pretty sure the child is not Margaretha’s and Anna Maria shows the same last name Galles.
Joseph and Jane HIRN - Oklahoma, and son John Armstrong HIRN

In the Sinnett Cemetery, Pawnee County, Oklahoma lies three HIRNs:

Jane HIRN (1852-1944) shares a tombstone with her husband, Joseph (1851-1941) HIRN. A military grave marker for John A. HIRN is near them.

His birth: Dec. 6, 1888
Death: Oct. 19, 1868

He served in World War I. I found his WWI draft registration card on Ancestry.com and it indicates his middle name is Armstrong, and his birthplace was "Louisville" or "Lanesville" in Missouri. He was currently living in Keystone, Pawnee County, Oklahoma.

The 1930 census has John A. HIRN living with his mother, Jane in Cimarron Township, Pawnee County, Oklahoma. But no mention of dad, Joseph. The marital status for mom is blurred.

Jane's birthplace, and that of her father and mother are: OH NJ KY.

Her son John's birthplace and that of his father and mother is: MO OH OH

I am not related; just passing this along.
Dennis,
We do have a match, but I didn't know Anton had a sister named Katherine.. The dates and other info do match though.
Anton did have a sister named Theresa who married a Uhl (Uhl being the sir name). Anton married Mary Hangs (Hanks) Feb 23, 1852.

Anton's father's name was Antoni b. 1787 and was married to Marie Anne Ley (not Hey) b. 1790. We have access to papers that said Antoni came to America in 1802 and worked on the Erie Canal. He did not want to send for his wife because of the Indians so he went back to France / Germany.
Anton stayed.
My new e-mail is junkuns@sbcglobal.net
I gave Ancestry.com my new address but they don't have it on the message boards yet.
E-mail me and we can compare more notes.
Hi Dennis and Thanks!
Anton is as far back as I have been able to get, and I don't have his brothers and sisters.
Anton F. (or Antony as he was called later), was my
gg grandfather and he was born in France in abt 1825 or 1826. He married "Mary" who was born in Baden in 1830. If you show Katherine as a sister during this time, and they were in Chillicothe Ohio, it sounds like we may have a match!
Anton's offspring were:
Alfred, John, Theresa, and William. I can provide the line going forward from Anton to his son John and so on. Does this match? Do you have anything past Anton or forward from Anton's brothers and sisters?
There's some neat history with Anton as they owned "The Hirn House" tavern and hotel there in Chillicothe. I have a picture of it that I can scan for you.
We ought to comepare notes!
My e-mail address is unsjunk@charter.net
Let me hear from you!
John Unsworth
Fort Worth Texas

I have researched the Johann (John) Michael Hirn family for 18 years and although I know a lot of information about him and his descendants I can't get back to his roots in Germany.

I learned learned years ago that his father is Michael Hirn and mother is Cecilia Koedel and Johann was born in Heidenheim or Nordlingen Germany but I can't get more than that. I don't even have proof that these are his parents' names.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get the German records or verify his family? I think he had a brother named Nicholas too.

Please help,
John Hirn
