Charles Wilfrid Bedell Hiscox - Photographer

I am not related, but am researching early Essex Photographers. Am trying to find info on Charles Wilfrid Bedell Hiscox (b.1883 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire)The son of James (Thomas) Hiscox (b. 1856 in Bristol, Gloucestershire) and Anne Maria Pook (b. 1855 in Stoodleigh, Devonshire). I believe he was a photographer in Chapel Street Colchester (c. 1911) married to Annie Mary Clarke (b. 1882 in Beltra, County Sligo, Ireland). I have reference that he may have travelled to Durban, South Africa and Buenos Aires, Argentina with his wife and family around 1920s/1930s. He died at 29 March 1938 at Westdean Peaks Hill, Purley, Surrey.
Any assistance or info welcome
Regards
Bob

Many years ago I looked this up in the old Norwich Library. I cannot remember the publication except that it gave meanings of names. According to that it derived from Hassocks makers, Hassocks then over the years became Hiscox/Hiscocks

Hi Patti.

Can't find any of those names at the right sort of date in my tree. The only family I have at that date has Martha, Thomas, Jane, Katharine and Charles, born from 1775 to 1783, the children of Thomas Hiscocks (b 1747) and Sarah.

When you say "same town", do you mean Frome? If so, must surely be cousins at least. Do you have candidate parents for your family?

Richard

Thank you for responding. That is not the same Fanny Hiscox/Bell. Her last child, my great grandmother was born in 1875 and she died between then and 1880. Fanny was born about 1850. I did see the other Fanny Hiscox and she might have been an aunt or something. Please let me know if you find anything else. I am really stuck.
Thank you,
K

I need to locate a male descendant of the RI Hiscox family for DNA testing. Thanks.
Larry

I'm so thrilled I stumbled upon these postings! There's probably no Australian connection now I've seen the information you've provided. I was grasping at straws trying to figure things out and "Auntie Lily" who emigrated to Australia definitely had an adopted daughter named Clara Minetta Bessie Hiscox -- with that in mind, I thought it was possible.

Bringing Bessie's children into the Humphreys family fold would explain why I'd always heard they partially raised ALL the children together as a large and happy family -- That was likely Bessie's children. I think I recall on one of the censuses other children with a different last name (maybe even Chandler?)

I have quite a number of family photos that include Clara. As an old lady/widow she resided with my grandparents. I also have a lock of her hair!

I'm very happy to share any info I have (I'm afraid that's really not too much) and photos. I'm so happy to finally get a bit of a handle on Bessie and will hopefully learn a bit more.

I've just let my Ancestry membership expire and don't plan on picking it up again for a while so I'm unable to check on censuses or even contact you directly.
Thanks for your reply to my query whch was entered some time ago when I was helping a friend with his family tree. I have not got the paperwork to hand as I am away from home but have spoken wih him and he has confirmed that Clara is also his great grandmother but through her first child Bessie Hiscox.
Bessie married Percival Chandler in 1893 in Wandworth. Bessie died in 1913 aged 41 and I understand that Clara helped bring up her family, some of whom were quite young. We were delighted to see your photograph of Clara and her husband - it looks as if they were married for some time so maybe she settled down in middle age! She certainly seems to have had a colourful youth. After your info, I will have another look at the family - also to see if there was an Australian connection. Best wishes

Clara Minetta Hiscox (Shepton Mallet 1849)was my great-grandmother. It wasn't until I started looking into family history that I became completely confused. All other branches of my family are easy and straight forward but Clara Minetta and her younger sister Elizabeth Ann (aka Lily) nothing is what was handed down. These two were quite something. Unfortunately I don't have the answers. I don't know if anyone ever will.

It gets far, far too confusing and I don't have the answers but please see my family tree "King Family Tree" Link: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/25799810/family and read the comments to do with these women and people surrounding them.

Hello Chris,

I was interested to read your messages concerning Giles Hiscox. Giles came from Melksham, Witshire & married the Norwegian lady in USA. They had a son, Giles Edward.

I was interested to learn of the steeplechasing as there are several connections with horses in the family. Where did you learn about this?

We probably share a common ancestor as my grandmother, Emily Margaret, was the sister of Giles.

Their own father was also Giles Hiscocks but the 'tree' is somewhat complicated by the fact that he had three wives in total -with offspring from each marriage. His third wife already had a daughter so there are several half-siblings all round!

Thank you for giving me a surname for Elizabeth as I had been unable to find any details of their marriage.

I hope that you receive this as it is several years since this particular message of yours.

With all good wishes & hoping for a reply,
Mary née Andrew.

Hello Chris,

I have read your message &, albeit from a long time ago, I hope that you reply as I think we may be related!

I believe that it is Giles Hiscox who married the Norwegian pastrycook -& their son, born in Illinois was Giles Edward.

I was really pleased that you have enlightened me of Elizabeth's maiden name as I can find no record of the marriage to Giles.

I am really interested with the content of your account as there is a definite 'horse interest' throughout the Hiscox family.

Giles' sister is my grandmother Emily Margaret Hiscox -DOB 1851 who married James Andrew.

The Hiscox family is rather complex as Giles, father of your Giles, married three times & had progeny from each marriage. To complicate matters his third & last wife already had a daughter when she married him. So there are several half-siblings to contend with in the family research.

Hoping to hear from you,
Best wishes,
Mary née Andrew.

I am interested to read of this Clara Minetta. I have been following the history of a West Australian hotelier- George Hiscox. George strated life as Artur Bruton and migrated to Australia in his 20s. I have found him in Victoriain 1886,1887 in !88 he appears as George Hiscox living 2doors from Mrs Frances Hiscox. In 1891 he moves to West Australia with his wife Lillian Maude hiscox. they have a child Clara Minetta Hiscox. It is not until his death that his brother William Hiscox corrected his death certificate(1927). This is now held in the State Records Office.
I have been unable to trace anything about Frances Hiscox ..other than she was still in Victoria until 1892.
The wedding certificate states marriage of Lily Hiscox and Artur Hiscox... no more ..I guess they did not want to be tracked.
George and Lily become important public figures in WA including Councillor and Mayor. He developed a string of hotels and was heavily involved in Trotting and racing.
I would be most interested

Check out "Walter and Mary (Fry) Harris of New London, Connecticut" by Gale Ion Harris, in New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol.156 (2002) p.357 where he refers to the Diary of Joshua Hempstead, entry dated 8 April 1745: "Old Ms Smith the only daughter of Old Mr Gibson died this morn aged about 80."

Elizabeth Gibson b. abt 1665 in England; m1. Samuel Harris; m2. Joseph Smith. She was the daughter of William Gibson d.1717, the Seventh Day Baptist minister in Rhode Island. However, her mother was NOT Rebecca Hiscox. See my other post on this board.

It is possible for probate to take years to divide, so 1756 entry may or may not refer to Gibson's daughter.

Rebecca Hiscox m. ?William Gibson d. 1717 CORRECTION

William Gibson, the pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, b. abt 1638 in England, came to Rhode Island in October 1675 with his wife and two children. Around 1678-1685 he lived in New London, CT; Kings Town, RI; 1692 in Newport, RI.

He is listed in Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 as having two wives m1. ___ in London or New London; m2. ___ Weeden. His source was Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island. There you'll find the error of why people keep saying William Gibson married Rebecca Hiscox.

Under Hiscox family entry, p.111 in Austin, it reads:
William Hiscox b. 1638 d. May 24, 1704; m. Rebecca
(children were Elizabeth and Thomas)

That makes William Hiscox same age as William Gibson. William Hiscox was the pastor at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in RI, William Gibson was his assistant until Hiscox died in 1704; then Gibson was the pastor until his own death in 12 March 1717.

The entry includes notes on the Hiscox family, including this one:
"1683 Oct 20: In a letter of this date from Samuel Hubbard, of Newport, to William Gibson at New London, he mentions Rebecca Hiscox, who must have been the wife of William."

This is why people think William Gibson married Rebecca Hiscox but clearly it's under the Hiscox entry and means William Hiscox's wife is Rebecca. Why? Because by this point there would be no reason to refer to William Gibson's wife by her maiden name. No Rebecca Hiscox married William Gibson, the Baptist minister.

If you go to the Gibson entry in Austin on p.95, it says:
William Gibson b. 1638; d. Mar 12 1717
m1. _____; m2. ___ Weeden
daughter (unnamed) m. ___ Harris (had children)
child (unnamed)

Can anyone help with the varying birth dates and marital status of Clara Minetta Hiscox? Born in Shepton Mallett in 1849 she had two children whilst living in Kingston Surrey in the early 1870's. She then appears to become two years younger and marries twice in 1876 to John Gibson and Edward Wild both in Kingston. Finally losing a further five years, she marries William Humphreys in 1881 and has more children.

I am seaching for any info on my grandfather the aforementioned. b 24 August 1883, Byron Michigan. From communication date of long past, he probably died in the mid-60's.His older brother Thomas has left few traces of his activities. The two brothers last saw each other in or about 1898, in Baraboo, Wisconsin. In about 1941 Thomas completly vanished around the Chicago area. Henry first married Bessie Ellen Benson, producing one child, Blanch in Everett, WA. U.S.A. Then married Sarah Belle Venard, producing on child, Frederick---my father, in the Seattle, WA area. Then Henry married Fay Irene Button, and Lillian M Shissler. Other than Sarah Venard, these 3 other women and Henry Newton Hiscox have left hardly a trace. It is rumored that Henry's mother, Amelia remarried a man named Herbert Russell Palmer and adopted this last name. Any and all info on any of these people would be appreciated

He married Mary Moulding, born in 1820 in Dublin.
Thomas married Ellen Newberry of Dalwood, Devon in Jun 1876 at Honiton and later moved to Chard in Somerset.
It would appear that my gg grandfather and your ggg grandfather were brothers.
I see that Bert left England in 1905.
Alfred Anna (or Frances) Hiscox - Ohio 1880-1932

Hi!

I am attempting to locate further information on Alfred and Anna or Frances Hiscock and their children. According to the 1900 Ohio Census they emigrated to the United States in 1880. Alfred was originally from England and Anna (or Frances depending on the record you are looking at) was originally from Wales. Alfred was born about 1842 and Anna was born about 1838. They reportedly had 12 children but only 3 were surviving in 1900. One of their children was TOM Hiscock. He was born in Wales in 1874. A variant spelling of the name is HISCOX. Anna (or Frances) died 17 March 1905 in Silver Creek, Medina County, Ohio. Alfred died 24 November 1932 in Medina, Medina County, Ohio. Any further information on this group would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Good luck in your own searches!

Cherre errehc@aol.com
