Re: HISLOP FAMILY, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND

Thank you for the information. I looked up Fairey Battle on Wikipedia and they have detailed information on that model of plane. Many were shot down during WWII. My mother says that Jack (my Grandfather, James referred to him as Jackie) was shot down over France. As far as my grandfather, James, goes, he married, Margaret McLaughlin from Edinburgh. They had met in Montreal Canada having each taken seperate trips across the Atlantic. James came over by himself after receiving a job offer on the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He said that he was hired because of his football skills and that he had been part of the Partick Thistle organization. James was a gentle kind man with a wicked sense of humor. I miss him dearly. Margaret crossed the Atlantic with the majority of her immediate family when she was just a girl.
Together they had 5 children: Caroline, Christina Tait, Margaret, David, and John. Margaret died as an infant and David died as a toddler. The three remaining children are still living.
If you have any information on your grandfather's sibling, Andrew, David, Bill and Nancy, I would greatly appreciate it. I know that Andrew was married because I met both him and his wife. He was gruff, but she was a gem. David reminded me of a younger version of my grandfather and his wife was a very sweet woman. They had two children a son, who at the time I met David, was living in South Africa with his wife and children(?). They also had a daughter, Fiona who you mentioned. My mother believes that Nancy never married. I have no information on Bill.
I hope that this helps you in some way. Karen

I'm sorry it's been such a long time between your post and my reply. I have managed to piece together quite a lot about the tribe and have posted it all as Hislop Family Tree on this web site.

Jack was indeed in the RAF and was shot down in an aircraft called a "Fairey Battle" in 1940. Fiona Hunt knows a bit more than that.

Thomas Tait Hislop was my father's father and he was born on 3 July 1898, married to Caroline Amelia Reynal in 1920.

I was born in Glasgow on 24 Sep 1952, Son of James and Margaret Hislop. The names james, Andrew and Thomas recur all the way through the family history. The tribe seems to have originated in Innerleithen in Peeblesshire and to have been farm labourers for generations.

Hope this is of some help. Maybe we can pool our resources?

George Hislop

I believe Jane Dalgleish who married Robert Hislop 12/6/1855 at Cockpen is on a Census 1841 record I have. She was born 1826 at Lasswade Midlothian. She is the eldest of 8 children on the 1841 & 51 Census. Her father is Robert Dalgleish born abt 1802 at Lasswade occupation Carter, mother Jane. The reason this record is amongst my research material is that I am researching the Dalgleish line.

When my mother, sister and I went to Britain to tour and visit family, we stop into your parents place for a lovely dinner and memorable trifle! As we were waiting in Heathrow for our trip home, your parents and yourself came to see us off. That was in May of 1978. Your Dad's father, James was my grandfather. My aunt Caroline also saw your message and tried to get in touch with you as well.
As I understand it, the siblings were Thomas, Andrew, Nancy, James, David, Bill (William), Helen, and Jackie who died at 19 yrs yound as a pilot in WWII over France.
Sorry to here about the cortisone, you must be in great pain. I can still hear her sweet Scotish accent ! Ta!
Teresa

I too have a picture of the family at Traquair, my dad gave it to me.
Aunt Lizzie I am told was working in the Post Office when some people came in to rob it and she chased them off, apparently it was in the papers!
Nite Nite, get back to you soon.

I believe that we are connected by the Hislop family. My Grandfather, James Hislop moved to Montreal Canada when he was around 18 years old to work at the Railroad. He was a fabulous man and Grandfather and although he died in the 1970's I still miss him. His brothers that I have met were David and Andrew. My mother's name is Christina Tate Hislop named after a relative (her aunt I believe). I went to Scottland with my Mom and sister in 1978 to meet relatives and tour around. We went to Traquair House where my Grandfather's grandfather(?) was the grounds keeper. We were fortunate enough to have a tour of the grounds by my Great Great Aunt Lizzie who was in her mid 90's at the time and as spry and witty as people half her age. She lived across from Traquair in what was once a post office on a quiet, narrow street. I have also been fortunate to meet her sister Great Great Aunt Nellie who moved to Canada and lived in Ontario until she passed away in her late 90's. She told me that Lizzie would come to visit her but that she did not like going out for walks with her because Lizzie would slap her on the back and say "Straighten up Nellie, you look like an old woman!" Nellie was also spry and very much "with it". My mother has a photo of the Hislop family from Traquair. As for more acurate and complete family tree and information, I can ask my mom and get back to you. Karen

Hi Andrew,

The Andrew, you were asking about, is my ggg-grandfather. But we have the last name spelled Hislop. My gg-grandfather is his son, Peter who married Sarah Jane Jones in September of 1886 in West Ham, England. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1904 or around there. They met up with Peter's brother, William Jackson Hislop, in Omaha, Nebraska, where they lived and raised their family. Peter, Sarah, and William's family are burried here. I and alot of the other descendents live in the area still today.
If you have any other question feel free to contact me or Agnes Noden, who is my grandmother's cousin. Agnes and My grandmoher, Dorothy were (and are) both Hislops.

Jennifer Baker

I saw your message & thought there was a possibility there would be a connection.
My Great Grandfather worked at Traquair House, Innerleithen.
He was Gardener & Gamekeeper there. His name was Andrew Hislop. The name HISLOP appears in the 1851 census for Traquair Parish. As does the name TAIT. Christina Elliot Tait was my Grandmothers name & my Grandfather was James Hislop. I see you have had no replies since 2003, so you may not be a member anymore, I hope this message reaches you. Fiona

Hi

Well - my Thomas' parents were Thomas Hislop and Annie Arkle, and I think I have them on the 1871 census at 8 Market Street, St James, Clerkenwell (?) Finsbury.

There were 3 boys by this time, Thomas (8), William (6) and Walter (3).

Thomas Snr was born in (what looks to me like) Midx Clerk**.

His wife Annie was born in Marleborne.

Thomas Jnr was born in Hert. N Woolich.

Let me know if any of this looks familar to you.

Many thanks for your reply.

Janice

Interesting! I guess that Sarah Jane and Thomas separated and he went off somewhere else, and then she took up with McLean. What did Sarah put as her marital status on the 1901 census? Did she call herself a widow then, or married, or single?

If she last had 'personal intercourse' with Thomas Hislop 2 years before Jennie was born, we know he was around and alive then. You don't say where you have searched for his death cert, but it is possible that he could have moved away, possibly to England or possibly further afield. A lot of Scots went to Canada and New Zealand.

Although Sarah is described as Thomas's widow in 1913, this does not necessarily mean he had died. If he had moved away and lost touch, no-one would know whether he was still alive or not, but it would make Sarah more respectable if she said she was a widow.

My Hislop ancestors lived in London from at least the 1790s but were said to come from Scotland. I haven't been able to get any further than that. Do you know where abouts in England your Thomas came from? Probably not related to mine, but I'm clutching at straws....

All the best
Ruth

I was trying to look up a Margaret Hislop and came across the burial site of Jennet Hislop w/o Robert Hislop. She is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery Janesville, WI in the same lot as Thomas and David Caldwell. I also find Wisconsin marriages for children of Alexander and Helen Hislop. If you want more info I can look them up.
Hello Andrew,
thank you for your reply,

I do have notes on the family of Andrew Hislop and Joan Jackson of Hawick, my own Hislop family are not connected to them as far as I know.

Which of Andrew Hislops children do you think you may be connected to?
One of Andrews sons, also Andrew married Grace Murray in Hawick on March 4th 1870, does this help you?

Look forward to hearing back from you again,

Amanda.

Hi,

My name is James Hislop and I am researching my family tree. There are quite a few James Hislops already in the tree and I have dates back to just before 1800. I would appreciate any information that you have, thanks.

Hislop - Leeds

My G Granddad Whatty Hislop (1886) was the son on Andrew (1854) and Lucy Hislop. Andrew was the son of Joseph Hislop of Edinburgh - b. 1815 who was married to Jane.

I'm not sure when they came to Yorkshire but if any of this rings a bell I would be greatly appreciative of more information.
