My husband is a descendent of the PA Hitchner's Jed and Chester who left NJ and moved to Pittston PA. They had a bakery there. I am interested in any information on them or the NJ Hitchner's. I have traced the family back to Jeremiah b. 1813

Thanks,
Joanna Hitchner

Hello, I saw this post and wanted to follow this thread. I am a descendent of the Stafa Itschner. I have a tree going back to about 1534 in Stafa. I have heard mention of this earlier information (i.e. before 1600) and I am interested in any information on the earliest Itschners--even fragments. Thanks for any assistance you can offer. My email is ayersr6@comcast.net
Thanks
Rick

Stu,

I've finally found you again after a few years. You kindly sent me a tree with names that became the basis for my family search. I have been plugging away since them, gathering source docs and ephemera. As you told me, it's a long and expensive process. But fun, to be sure. I've become meticulus about documentation...

The email addy I had for you a few years ago is no longer valid, so I'm glad to find you on this board.

There didn't seem to be an ITSCHNER board, so I created one and just got the approval for it.

Gena Itschner Flatley
Gene A. Itschner b. 1918 d. 2000.

What is this DNA test you've done? Is it the one where you send in a swab from your cheek?

Hitchner Itschner DNA

Many of you researching the Hitchner family are aware that the origin of the family name is Swiss. Written record of the name Itschner is found as early as 1276 near Stafa.

You might be interested to know that I have had the chance to compare my "Hitchner" DNA sample to a male descendant of the Itschner family. The result was a 12 point exact match. An exciting confirmation and scientific proof to our connection to the Itschner clan.

I am hoping that more Hitchners' and Itschners' will add to the database.

Are you ready for this? Hitchner DNA (mine, at least) also matches with a host of people with different surnames. This simply means that we share a common ancestor some time prior to the adoption of surnames. Obviously before 1276.

Stu

Joe, Barksdale...hummmm...isn't that in the Shreveport area...I-20? I'm in the Army and have had the 'pleasure' of visiting Ft Polk, LA a few times. The info posted is kinda new to me. I have my direct Hitchner line coming over on the Ship Henrietta in 1753, also from Rotterdam and then Cowes, which is on the southern coast of the British Isles. I'm pretty sure my direct line, originating in the Palestine area of Germany, came up the Rhine River and caught a boat from Rotterdam to Philadelphia before finally settling in the Salem Co, NJ area. They had the same requirement to swear allegiance, etc. I have a copy of that manisfest, which should also be found somewhere on the Ancestry website. You can write me at my home e-mail if ya want-- hitchjrtc@hotmail.com
John
Any information on the boat the Hitchner's came over on would be great...I think that my John's father was more then likely on that boat as well.

Joe

John May married Margaret Hitchner born 23 APR 1764. (Now you know her maiden name.) Hitchners started at Friesburg, Salem Co., NJ. So this May family most likely came from Germany like the Hitchners.

The above is what got me to this thread. This John May who married a Margaret Hitchner is my brick wall. Was wondering if my John could have been one of the passangers on that ship that came over from Germany. I have long suspected German ansestry but have no proof. This list of passangers would be awesome as I am sure their is a May on it. The family has been in South Jersey forever and I do not have access to most historical documents up there as I am in the Military and am stationed down south....so any assistance is appriciated on the May/Hitchner connection. Most of the family is still there in South Jersey by the way.

Elizabeth Hitchner married Samuel Murphy; probably New Jersey about 1800

Our family tradition indicates Samuel Murphy (born 1774 son of William Murphy & Phebe Sherry) married an Elizabeth Hitchner (born about 1780).
The Murphys lived in Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, New Jersey at the time, and I'm guessing the marriage would have been in the 1795-1800 period.
I am seeking confirmation of this marriage and any available information on the family of Elizabeth Hitchner.

The family moved to Bath Township, Franklin County, Indiana in 1818. I have located census listings for the family in 1830 & 1850 in Franklin Co, IN.

Elizabeth Hitchner Murphy died 23 Jan 1857. Various sources say she may have died while visiting family in New Jersey. Some say she is buried in Indiana, others say she is buried in New Jersey.

Children of Samuel Murphy & Elizabeth Hitchner are:
1.
HITCHNER's in southern New Jersey

Bill:
Most of my ancestors came from southern Jersey ... Alloway, Centerton, ... essentially Salem Cumberland Counties.

I have lots of info from the Friesberg Luthern Church sighting baptisms and other info.
Most of the info I have is from "The Hitchner Book", "A Hitchner Genealogy" (both can be found in the Salem County Historical Sciety) and this website. I've been researching my family roots since the spring and feel I've made good progress ... have my HITCHNER line back to Germany in the early 1700's.

I'd be very interested in seeing the HITCHNER info you've researched/collected.

Sincerely,
John Hitchner

I'm a descendent of Eli P. & Theodosia Hitchner. I have a copy of "The Hitchner Family" by Alyce Hitchner Garrison (borrowed from my mother, an Alloway, NJ Hitchner). Alyce's first is Jacob b. 11/6/1722 married to Mary Magdelina b. 12/13/1733, both buried in Friesburg NJ. Have you been able to trace back any further? I've been scouring every immigrant list on the internet for Utzner, Itschner, Itsner, etc. with little success.
Thank You
ME

Alloway Tavern

Just found a link in the National Archives. It has the history of the Alloway Tavern inc. photos from the 1930's, a data sheet and even the blueprints. According to the data, it was built and owned by George Hitchner, abt 1830, and was a tavern the day it opened. Grew up there and never knew that! There are pictures of several other old homes in and near Alloway.
