David Hite - 1797 Virginia

I am looking for information on David Hite that was born in Virginia in 1797. He married Elisabeth (?). I believe his father was from Germany and his mother was from Pennsylvania. They moved to Ohio and then to Illinois where they settled in LaSalle County in 1848 and the eldest son of each generation has remained on the original settled plot. I have lots of information of the family once they came to Illinois if anyone needs it, I am trying to find where they came from before. I know the spelling was changed over the years, but it was Hite when they moved to Illinois.

Samuel Hite and Mary Ann Pendrell Tasmania

My name is Paul Robinson and Samuel Hite and Mary Ann Pendrell were ancestors of mine, my paternal mother's side of the family. I have some information about Samuel, especially when kidnapped by Mathew Brady but very little other credible information. It would be appreciated if anyone can provide me with any information about Samuel and Mary Ann. I have the obvious family tree aspect of the family but very little about their story. If anyone wants the story that I have found and guessed about then I am happy to send it to whomever is needing the story.

As I recall, there is a manuscript Hite genealogy at the Daughters of the American Revolution library in Washington DC. I copied the sections pertaining to my immediate forbears, but not the entire document. I will check to see if it addresses Lavina or Moefield.

Do you have any information about Lavina Jane Hite (7/23/1850) married to Lewis James Linton (4/12/1848)? Father was Moefield Hite; mother was Susan Grove. I have that Lavina was born in Lima, Ohio. Thank you.

Actually, the book I am referring is right here on ancestry.com/search/card catalog and then a section about memories. I don't recall those names but then again I wasn't looking for them. At least you can access the book through this website so happy hunting. There are other books listed for Shenandoah Valley as well.

Re: Jost HITE

I discovered a book at the Winchester, VA library entitled, "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants" written by T. K. Cartmell, Clerk of the Old County Court in Frederick Co., VA. This book was written in 1909. I recently visited Winchester and obtained a library card which I am able to log-in through their website. I was able to print out the entire book. It is very informative about the Hite family and the original settlers who came with him. On page 4, it states that Hite brought 16 families with him to the Lower Valley then known as Spottsylvania. In 1734, Orange was formed from Spottsylvania. In 1738, an Act of the House of Burgesses directed 2 new counties to be formed, one to be Frederick and the other Augusta. Since no court was organized until Nov. 11, 1743, there were no records of the minor grants of the 16 families. It states that some of the 16 families were Joist Hite's immediate family (he had several sons of full age and 3 married daughters). Thus, we have 4 out of the 16 within his own circle, which enabled him to assert a right to rule and direct the movement of his new colony. His sons inter-married with the other families. Hite speaks of his sons-in-law, Paul Froman, George Bowman, and Jacob Chrisman.

Before Hite and his colonists arrived in the Shenandoah Valley, Lord Fairfax gave large grants of land to Isaac and John Van Meter who lived in old Salem, New Jersey dated 6/17/1730 and then they assigned their grants to Joist Hite in 1731.

The first conveyances of land made by Hite in March, 1736, and recorded in the Old Orange court, were made to his colonists, who comprised his 20 families (not 16) as follows:

10/26/1737, John Seaman, 1,000 acres adjoining Benj. borden--James Wood April 25, 1738 for 100 acres on West side of "Opequon run."

William Williams, 4/27/1738, 220 acres on "Openquon run."

Louis Stevens, 4/28/1738, 339 acres--Crooked run.

Peter Writtenhouse, 5/21/1740, for 450 acres adjoining Long Meadow.

Jacob Christman, 5/14/1740, for 750 acres.

John Hite, 5/21/1740, 568 acres, part of Hite's grant and also 100 acres adjoining, purchased by Joist from Richard Pendall on "Openquon."

William Reed, 5/14/1740, for 210 acres on SW side of "Openquon run," part of Hite's grant--1734.

John McCormick, 5/26/1740, for 395 acres adjoining the Borden, Griffith and Hampton, etc. tract of 1122 acres. This grant was for land north of the point where White Hall village stands.

Samuel Walker, 5/21/1740, for 100 acres on "west side of Sherrando river."

Chas. McDowel, 7/20/1740, for 600 acres.

James Burns, 5/24/1741, for 128 acres on "west side of Sherrando."

Robert Allen, 5/21/1742, for 685 acres on "south side of Openquon run." This tract was west from the Bartonsville section.

John Harrow, May 19, 1742, for 290 acres on "north side of Openquon run."

Abram Wiseman, 6/23/1734, for 172 acres on "west side of Opequon run"--part of the 5,018 Hite grant.

James Vance, 6/25/1742 for 250 acres on both sides of small meadow near Openquon Presbyterian meeting house.

Peter Make, 6/23/1742 for 168 acres on "Openquon run."

David Vance, 5/20/1742, for 100 acres on both sides of the "Opequon run."

James Hoge, 5/26/1742, fof 760 acres. This wsa near the present site of Kernstown lying West--and was part of Joist Hite's grant for 3395 acres, known as the Springdale Settlement, where Col. John Hite lived.

Jacob Hite, 10/20/1742, for 2668 acres on "south side of Opequon."

John Pentz, 10/20/1742, for 189 acres on "north side of Sherando river."

Thomas Brown, 10/20/1742, for 882 acres on west side of Sherando river.

Samuel Glass, 11/26/1742, for 900 acres on the head of Opequon on west side of said creek, meaning south at that point.

David Logan, 11/26/1742, for 860 acres on "west side of Bufflow Meadow"--known for years as Buffalo Marsh.

Paul Froman, 11/22/1742, for 120 acres on North fork of Sherando river, adjoining Thomas Chester.

Emanuel Grubb, 8/26/1742, for 250 acres on north side of Shenandoah river.

John Grubb, 8/26/1743, 265 acres on north side of S. river.

Thomas Ashby, 2/1/1742 for 200 acres on north side of Shenandoah river.

Robert McKay, from Just Hite, William Duff and Robert Green, 6/28/1744, for 500 acres on Linville's Creek, being part of the grant to Robert McKay, Just Hite, William Duff, and Robt. Green for 7009 acres, dated March 1736.

This book has all the history of the land, wars, and the families. It is very lengthy--522 pages--but it is worth the read if you are interested in the history.

I am new at this but I have found that my ancestor came over on the the Ship "Pink Mary" from Dublin in 1733. His name was Adam Funk. His mother died in childbirth delivering twins. Adams Father Frederick gave Adam to a family friend on the ship. There was a man named Peter Hite who settled in the Shenandoah Valley the same place my Adam was raised by his adoptive family. I don't know if there is a connection in my family but Peter may be related to yours. The are many Hites(Joist, John, Isaac,Abraham) who were in the VIrginia Ohio area of the 1730's-1750's.

Barsheba HITE (HIGHT) married R. J. KNIGHT (Rufus J. KNIGHT) April 3, 1870, Paducah, McCracken Co., KY.
For both, it was a second marriage, with Barsheba being age 38, residence Paducah, McCracken Co., KY.
Neither Barsheba's birthplace nor parents were stated, unfortunately.
Rufus J. KNIGHT was 48, occupation Cooper, born Pennsylvania, residence: Paducah, McCracken Co., KY.
Was Barsheba a widow? (inferred from second marriage).
This couple (Rufus J. KNIGHT and wife Barsheba) is then found in the 1870 Census, nearby Livingston Co., KY.
Living with them was William HITE, age 22, born ca. 1848, likely a son of Barsheba HITE.
In the next 1880 Census, she appears as Cecilia or Cecelia (not Barsheba) KNIGHT, wife -- assuming it is the same wife.
Any help with the Hite family is appreciated.
Christie

Peter Hight/Hite (1760 - 1840) Montgomery County, Virginia

My family and I have been desperately
searching for the parents of my gr-gr-grandfather PETER HIGHT - who was first found in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1820 (over the age of 45). It is not known where he came from but he already had a large family of 9 (4 adults and 5 children) according to the 1820 Census of Montgomery County, Virginia. His name is listed as "Hight" although on some documents I have found in the courthouse, it was recorded as "Hite". I have several items (papers) which he signed in his own handwriting and he spelled it "HIGHT"
He worked for the Prestons of Smithfield Plantation. So did my gr-grandfather
JAMES PETER HIGHT/Hite (b. 1818, d. 1886) - who was overseer for William
Ballard Preston. JAMES PETER HIGHT was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Linkous. Her parents were John Linkous (d. 1822 the same year Eliz. was born), and Elizabeth Trollinger.

My grandfather WILLIAM BALLARD PRESTON HIGHT/Hite was named for his father's
employer. He lived 1858 - 1935 in Montgomery County, Virginia.

We have spent months and months and months and months searching and
researching every Hight, Hiett, Hite, Hyat, (you name it) line, trying to
find Peter's parents and where he came from.

We have 2 hints: 1) James Peter Hight (my gr-grandfather) had a middle-age
"moment" in his 50s and left his family (all the kids and wife) and married
another woman 2 counties away (Floyd County, Virginia). The marriage
application states that his parents were "Peter & Catherine Hight" He married CHLOEY CARROLL, in her 30s. THey had 2 children before James P. died in 1886 - Andrew J (b. 1879) and Jane P (born 1881)

2) My father BENTLEY HITE, who passed away in 1992 at the age of 91, told me
hundreds of times throughout my life that "our Hites went to Ohio and came
back"

When James Peter Hight pulled his little "marriage switcheroo" in 1873, the
older sons (some of them adults) broke ties with him completely and tore his
name out of the family bible. There was also a split in the family after
that time as to how we spelled our name. Peter Hight and James Peter Hight
always spelled their name "Hight" (I have their signatures on courthouse
documents). My grandfather William Ballard Preston Hight spelled his name
"Hight" when he married in 1882, but started using "Hite" shortly
thereafter. My father used the name "Hite" exclusively after he went to
college in the 1920's and I was born "Hite", When my 20-year marriage ended
in 1996, I used the divorce opportunity to legally change my name to MARTHA ANN HIGHT. I married again in 2001 and am now Martha Hight Anderson.

Peter Hight had many children (reading from the 1820 and 1830 census of Montgomery County, Virginia), but the only two I know about definately are JAMES PETER HIGHT and MARY HIGHT (who married Henry Kelly in 1836 in Montgomery County).

James Peter Hight had John T., Daniel, Abram, Gordon, Joseph, William Ballard Preston, Floyd Crockett, Mary Elizabeth and Catherine J. Both girls died of fever in 1854 (per Montgomery County death records) at the ages of 12 and 2 respectively. John T. lived in Radford, Virginia as an adult and had 2 daughers - Deborah and Melvina . He served in the Civil War as a Confederate Soldier. Daniel married late in life at age 40 to Nancy Gusler of Giles County, Virginia. Abram joined the Civil War as a Union Soldier and never returned (presumed killed in action). Gordon married Amanda Harrell and had a large family and lived in the Pulaski area. Joseph married Victoria Strader and lived in Giles County, Virginia. Floyd married Emalilne Price and lived in the Pulaski area. My grandfather, William Ballard Preston Hight/Hite married Martha Jane Scott in 1882 and lived in Montgomery County, Virginia.

I will be happy to share my information with anyone interested in this line, and hope that somewhere out there, there is the answer to the question "WHO WAS PETER HIGHT AND WHERE DID HE COME FROM?"

I enclosed a photo of my grandparents William Ballard Preston Hight/Hite and his wife Martha Jane Scott, from around 1882, at the time of their marriage.

Thanks,
Martha Hight Anderson

This Mathias Hite deal can get VERY complicated as there are two Mathias Hites (one [the RW one] B c1750, the other bc1767) in the Frederick Co. area. Remeber that at that time (pre 1806) Frederick covered all of the West Virginia counties that now border VA. I am descended from Mathias (B 1767) who died in Fred. Co. in 1834 (inventory date) thru his son, John who married Catherine Grove and died in Warren Co. Has anyone figured out where to go from here? I KNOW we are NOT the Jost Hite group.

Andreas Heyd (1737 immigrant) and possible son, Andrew (1758-1819)

From everything I've read online, it appears that the father-son relationship between Andreas (1737 immigrant) and Andrew (1758-1819) is not proven, but is strongly suggested.

I'd like advice on this piece of conflicting evidence for Andrew's parentage: the "Family Data Collection - Births" shows that Andrew's father was ABRAHAM Hite and mother was Magdalena. Birthdate is 24 Feb 1758 in Rockingham, VA, which corresponds to what others have reported.

In addition, the "Family Data Collection - Individual Records" shows the parents as ABRAHAM and Magadalena. The other information in this record agrees with other reports: Born 24 Feb 1758 in Rockingham County, VA; died 24 Feb 1819 in Fairfield County, Ohio.

My questions:
1) Is the "Family Data Collection" a reliable source of information?
2) Is ABRAHAM the anglicized version of "Andreas"?

J. Nancy M. "Mellie" McGlothlen's given names have been the subject of considerable research within the McGlothlen family.

Her first given name is believed to be Jane, named after her paternal grandmoter, Jane (Davis) McGlothlen. Her called name was "Mellie" at at least some stages of her life. Her family descendants Primarily (Hite) who lived in Idaho generally believe her called name signified that her second middle name was "Melvina", though there is no other source data we have found for that assumption. I believe the name is more likely "Melinda", as that name was given to one of her daughters.

Do you have any data that would help shed light on this minor detail?

Don McG
McGlothlen Family Historian

Does anyone know if there is a record of the 16 Pennsylvania families that traveled with Jost Hite to the Winchester District. See below. I have seen this repeated over and over again, but haven't been able to locate a list of these families.

Jost Hite and Winchester Marker

Inscription. German emigrant Jost Hite and about 16 other German and Scots-Irish families from Pennsylvania came to this region in 1732, creating one of the early permanent European settlements. They settled along the Opequon Creek watershed south-west of the present-day city of Winchester. Soon after their arrival, a number of other communities developed regionally, including Fredericktown, present-day Winchester. Winchester was chartered as a town in 1752. It began as a small farming community that developed into a thriving town and important trading center at the junction of several transportation arteries.

Judy
I am also seeking information on this Jacob Hite. He was my 4x Gr. Grandfather. I am not convinced that his father was John Hite and mother Catherine Sheiner as stated in One World Tree. I see you posted this in 2005. Have you come up with any proof of this since then? Also, regarding the DNA - I am told it is only accurate if you can trace is along the fathers. Sarah Catherine Hite was my Gr. Grandmother so I don't think it could be conclusive in my case. I am a grandaughter of Joseph Caffee - son of Sarah Catherine.

My 3rd great-grandmother is Mary Ann Kirkland, born abt 1805 in Virginia, married Thomas Dawson in 1822 in Amite County, Mississippi.

I'm thinking her parents were Phineas Kirkland and Margaret Hite. Clues:
* Phineas and Margaret were married 1804 in Rockbridge County, Virginia (formerly Augusta County).
* Mary Ann was born abt 1805 in Virginina.
* According to marriage records of Mary Ann and Thomas Dawson, Mary Ann's mother's name was Margaret.
* Thomas Dawson was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, so the families could have migrated together.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

dmc77381

Looking for information on Great Aunt....

My great Aunt's name was Marie, I believe. It may have been Mary. I know nothing about her other than the following: her maiden name was Brislin, she married a man with the last name of Hite, and that she was born somewhere between 1920-1925. She had a brother named Joseph. They were from Pennsylvania. He was born in Wilkes-Barre in 1925 and died in Harvey's Lake in 1994. Her father's name was also Joseph from what I have been told, and I believe that she had an aunt that they called "Mamie". That is all I have been able to gather so far.
