If your ancestor immigrated to the United States there is very likely an immigration file for him in the U.S. National Archives. These files have information about family history and photos.
Alternately what information do you have about him? He is from Hoiping/Kaiping -- do you know of the village name? Do you have his name in characters?
There are a lot of Cantonese Ho's so it's a matter of getting to the village or town level specifically.

Hi,

I'm from Sydney, Australia but originally from Hong Kong.

I'm also tracking down the HO (何) family genealogy.

My grandmother (CHIU-Yim-King) and her entire family migrated from China to Hong Kong probably in the 1940's after WW2. Due to the mayhem of migration I assume we have lost contact with my grandfather (HO).

I'd be glad to help out, but I don't know where to start!

gymlaw - There is a suspicion that my grandfather was a military/government person. There is also a suspicion that the our bloodline is not of Cantonese decent. We are tall and have pale white skin that's not a yellow tan like the shorter Cantonese people. In fact, I am 185cm (6 foot 2?) and I have a FULL beard, which makes little sense as none of my mother's side nor ANY Cantonese people I know have much facial hair, let alone a beard.

Cheers.

Hi,

I don't know if this helps, but I have an old family tree created by Harvard Yenching Library which includes distant relative and Chinese American businessman Chinn Ho, dated 1982 and addressed to Chinn's son Dean. In this document, titled the Ho Family Genealogy, Chinn Ho is generation #28 and Dean is generation #29. It has some tidbits of information on the Ho family move to Hawaii from Zhu Tou Yuan.

The document has some other data points, although I cannot vouch for their accuracy. The Ho family moved to Zhu Tou Yuan from Fujian in 1736. Before Fujian, this part of the Ho family resided in Anhui until 892.

I do not see anybody named Ho Tim, although there was a generation named "Tian" (translation is sky or heaven) and one of these guys successfully migrated from Zhu Tou Yuan and settled in Hawaii in the 19th century. The romanizations make linking names difficult, and some approximate dates of birth or death might help.

Hello unfortunately we know very litte as my grandfather died when my Dad was a youngster. I've attached my grandfather's name Ho Tim. Aside from my Dad's name (he was born in Hawaii), I only have a few names. My grandmother Yok Moi Lum was his second wife and was born in Hawaii. His first wife came from China, I found her name in a Census as Lean Jok. They had two children Ah Lam and Ha Quan. My great grandfather is Ho Yuck. Supposedly Ho Chinn (Chinn Ho was a distant cousin).

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

It is the ancestral village of many of the Ho families in Hawaii. If you have additional info about your family, particularly names in Chinese characters, then maybe I can help.

From what my grandmother remembers he was a general with Sun Yat Sen by the name of Ho Lui Hap (d. abt 1944). I've tried researching that name and haven't come up with anything. He supposedly was from Hoiping with mixed blood (either Chinese/Mongolian/Turkish or Chinese/Mongolian/Persian). Have you any mention of such name in your research?
Thanks

My grandfather was Ho Tim who was a plantation laborer in Hawaii. We think he immigrated to Hawaii around 1894. His father was Ho Yuck, but we don't know his mother's name. He supposedly was born in Hong Kong, but oral history says that he was born in Jook Tow Yin Village, Nam Long Section, Heung Shan District, China. We know he had family, but have not been able to trace roots to find any of them.

Hi Dexter,

Not sure if you managed to find out the origin of our surname, but my understanding is that the surname originated when Ho A Yun (full familiar version of chinese name) went to Guyana as an indentured worker from the Canton region of China. At that time many folks from China went to Guyana and it was common for the British to take the whole chinese name "Ho" (surname) "A" (familiar version of generation name - not known) "Yun" (first name) and combine them as a "British friendly" surname. The British then provided a first name. So our common ancestor become known as James Ho A Yun. My father and most of our relatives have since shortened this to Ho-A-Yun or Hoayun.

A couple of years ago I did an fairly extensive search on the Hoayun family tree and I think I found most of James Ho A Yun's decendents. I would love to be able to trace back to James' ancestors, but since Ho is such a common surname in China and we have lost the generation name, I have been unable to go any further back. Please let me know if you know any of the family who may know what the generation name was, i.e what the "A" replaced ?

Do let me know if you would like further information on the Hoayun family tree. It's quite likely that you know a lot already, but I am more than happy to provide you with what I have found so far.

Hope that helps

Paul

In your family HO did any (male) travel to South Africa late 1800 early 1900? I am trying to find a relative known only as "Chuck" HO who travelled to SA, married had 7 children and died on a return voyage to China. Survived by his wife and children who completed the journey to China staying with the HO family but eventually returning to South Africa.
