I trying to locate living relatives for my grandfather Ian Brien Hoban he was born in the Maternity Hospital, Dundee, Scotland 4/12/1928 - he is currently residing in Australia and emmigrated from Scotland on 14/7/1938 via the passenger ship Staffnaver.

His mother's name was Margaret Hoban (may have been born in Scotland not Ireland??), laundry maid of Pound Street, Ballaghatereen, Co. Mayo Ireland. Ian has no father recorded on his birth certificate. She registered his birth herself. She was not married at the time. No address was given at the time for Margaret Hoban meaning she may not have lived and worked in Dundee rather she travelled there to have her baby annonomously. No records of Dundee Maternity Hospital have survived so no further info can be obtained on Ian's birth. Margaret Hoban was unmarried as at 1928.

Research shows Maragret may have had 3 other sisters - Josephine Hoban, Mary Agnes Hoban and Kathleen Hoban (who died aged 13) all born in the 1900's. Only two of the sisters were baptised - not sure which ones. Maragarets parents were John and Catherine Hoban (nee Casey) - no record of their marriage can be located. They had a fifth child Edward Hoban in 1910 but he died a few months old.

Maragret and her sisters were found on the streets under the age of 6 years old, a court order in 1907 sent the four girls to the Sisters of Charity in BALLAGHATEREEN in an institute for destitute children, an industrial school, where she worked in the laundry, she was discharged to her Aunty, Mrs Hession around April 1919.

Ian Hoban (grandad) was baptised at St John's in Perth, Scotland. They have no record for the first 2 years of his life however, they have recorded that The Catholic Protection Society of Edinburgh recommended he be admitted to Nazareth House, Ditton, Liverpoll on 27/12/1930. A year later on 7/1/32 Ian was transferred to Nazareth House Lasswade, Edinburgh. He was discharged when he migrated to Australia on 14/7/1938.

I have seeked assistance from the Catholic Child Welfare Council in the UK but they have limited information past 1918 so I am at a brick wall.

I would like any information concerning any of these people to help in finding my Grandads family or any living relative. He is over 75 now and his life long wish before he can get closure and live happily is to reunite with any family relatives, as he has no family relatives in Australia - that he knows of anyway. He would even like to fly to his home turf to meet living relatives and gain closure but as time goes by travel is becoming limited

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Regards

Kathleen Habes (nee Pacey)
Grand daughter of Ian "Scottie" Hoban
