My dads Francis Hoban,my grandads Joseph Hoban both born in belfast. My grandad only had 1 brother and sister, sean(John) unmarried,no children and a sister maureen.Their father Michael was born in Mayo and must have still lived there in 1911 as theres no sign of him in belfast in 1911 census. He married in belfast in 1917 to josehine killen. He was possibly married twice and maybe other children but im unsure.my grandad joseph brendan hoban had 14 children but none was named coleman.thats not to say he didn't have any half brothers & sisters with his dads 2nd marriage

hello john,I live in Antrim,n.ireland and my gggrandfather was John Hoban from mayo then Galway.Ive found it hard to check which one is mine as there are sooo many John and michael hobans! From my ggrandfathers marriage record,it names his father as John, occupation blacksmith.the 1911 census shows a john' 47, blacksmith living in tucker street, castlebar, mayo, but whats thrown me is it states his place of birth as Scotland! I'd never heard this before. If it's the right hoban, there a possible brother (maybe twin)Patrick, also in castlebar and a blacksmith also born in scotland.Does any of this match your links?

An old post I know, but this made me laugh as my father used to tell us the same story that we (Hobans) were part of the spanish armada and washed up on the west coast of ireland.Going deeper into the history ,it could be partly true,as the spanish Catholics were coming to the fight the English and no doubt the irish went to help! haha just a thought!!

Grew up in Scranton owning a mine for awhile, and eventually settled in Woodbridge, New Jersey.
Re: Margaret Hoban - mother of Ian Brien Hoban

Oh my god!! I can't believe I found you!! My mother is your grandfathers half-sister. Her mother was Margaret Bracken (Nee: Hoban) Is your grandfather still alive?? I hope so, I have had a hard time trying to find out any info on my mothers family as she had said that her mother never really talked about her family. She always got the impression that her mother was raised in a convent but wasn't sure why. She knew her Auntie Josie (Josephine) and she knew her Auntie Agnes. She lost touch with both of them over the years.
However, I have just recently aquired my great Auntie Josephines social security application (she moved to the USA around 1930) and it listed her parents as John Hoban and Katie (Catherine Casey)

So let your grandfather know that he has two half-sisters. My mothers name is Rosemarie Ann and her older sister is Eva Mary. Margaret Hoban married Thomas Patrick Bracken around 1940 and lived in Dublin. She had, I believe, 3 or 4 children but only 2 survived...my mother and Aunt. They lived in a pretty much condemned building off of O'Connell Street during my mothers younger years and then were given a sort of council house close by. They moved to England at some point because my grandfather (Thomas Bracken) was in the Royal Army Medical Corps and they moved around quite a bit. (By the way ...there was a big age difference between Margaret Hoban b. 1901 and Thomas Patrick Bracken b. 1919) They also lived in Germany for a while. Well, there's a lot to tell, but let me just say for now that my mother moved to the USA in the 1960's and now lives in New Jersey, and my Aunt still lives in England. My mother has also wanted to get back to Ireland but hasn't before because for the longest time the memories were too sad for her to face. Now she says she can remember the good in Ireland.

I sure hope I'm not too late, I really can't believe I found your old post and hope that your grandfather is still alive. Please respond ASAP. I will tell my mother as soon as I can. She will be so happy to know something about her family and has also felt a little lost. Also, I have some pictures of Margaret Hoban that I can get copied. So he can know what his mother looks like. Talk to you soon, I hope!! Ann King (Grand daughter of Margaret Bracken Nee: Hoban)
in your research of Hobans in County Mayo, have you found any that were National School Teachers? We think Grandfather Hoban was born in Mayo,He and his father and several family members were teachers. We don't know his fathers name, but his name was John Francis and he married Honoria Connor. They both taught school and raised their family in Ryehill, Crumlin, County Galway. But that is not far from Westport, and family stories talk about Grandfather walking from Westport to the school in Crumlin.
Thanks for any help, as we are trying to go beyond Grandparents!

My great grandfather may be related to John J Huban. He was from Co. Galway and born around the same time. (family always thought around Gort). He was one of six brothers. His name was Malachy Huban. We know that one brother went to the US (possibly two), one went to Australia and one went to UK. The rest remained in Ireland. Malachy Huban married Elizabeth Glennon. He had a drapery business and a Hotel. They had four children Elizabeth (Lilly) Huban, Greta Huban, John Patrick Huban (B. 13/2/1891 D. 1957) who became a Major General and was a surgeon in the Royal British Army, and my granddad Joseph Martin Huban (01/11/1889 – 29/09/1946) he was a chemist. By any chance have you had any luck in tracing back to your roots in Ireland? Any information would be really welcome

Hello - just wondering if we have links in our tree. I am interseted in Briget Hoban(Obin) who moved from Ireland before 1851 Born Approx 1834 her father and brother were both named Michael. This is as far as I have been able to go. I understand from my Grandmother, Mary McDonald, that both Bridget and Roger McDonald came to Liverpool from Ireland in a pig boat during the civil war. Any info on who they were and where to search would be brilliant.

My paternal grandmother was Margaret Hoban from Westport (or maybe Castlebar) who came over to the US in 1926. She married Patrick Heraty in Chicago sometime shortly after 1926, I believe. She passed away in Arlington Heights, IL, in either 1985 or 1986.

Margaret (Hoban) Heraty had seven children: Rosemary (Jansen), Margaret (Widduck) [deceased circa 2004], Nancy (Lindholm) [deceased circa 2004], Dolores (Lindgren), Patrick, Hubert [deceased circa 2008], and Patricia (Caldwell).

Michael Hoban was my great great grandfather, we only know that he was born in Ireland in 1833 came to US in 1850, married a Catherine (Katherine)? He lived in Kentucky although I cannot find him or his family in any census in Kentucky. He came to Indiana and lived in Parke County, IN.
My great grandfather Patrick Hoban said he was born in Kentucky. He had brothers named John, Michael, James, sisters were named Kate (probably Katherine, Catherine) and Annie. My grandmother could remember her grandfather Michael and her grandmother Catherine whom she was named after. But we don't know when they died, where Catherine came from, whether she was born here in US or in Ireland. Where Michael came to when he came to US. Whether he came straight to Kentucky or elsewhere. We don't know what part of Ireland he was born in. Any help you can give me I would appreciate greatly.

Yes it is possible that this could be him, all I know is he came from Ireland in 1850 at age of 17. What was your great great grandmother's name (first name anyway). We don't know where he landed whether it was Boston, New York, Philadelphia or where. His wife's first name was Catherine, Katherine, Catheryn. We don't know her maiden name or whether she came from Ireland also or was born here. We only know that my great grandfather was born in Henderson KY. That my great great grandfather Michael was still alive in 1900 and he lived in Parke Co. IN. When he died we really don't know. He apparently died before my grandmother married and she was married in 1910. We don't know if he had family here other than his wife and children. I know this doesn't answer your question if this is the same man or not. But thank you for answering.

Sharon

This is a longshot considering how long ago this thread was started and how little I know, but here goes.

I believe I am related to an Honoria Hoban on my grandmother's side - if I'm correct she was an aunt or sister of my great grandfather although I'd have to check this, it stands out in my mind because it was of interest to my family that I had been named Honor without my parent's knowledge of such a similar name in our family's past. The family DID originate from Mayo, and my great grandfather moved to scotland, to somewhere around Bathgate, West Lothian. This is all I can say at present, but can possibly find out more if there is any interest.
