I'm serarching down the Hochadels of Erie County, New York (in 1852).  Here is the St. Marys Church record for your "Mary" Hochadel - Wagner;

"10 June 1858: Joannes Wagner, son of George & Cath. of Alsace. Maria Eva “Mary” Hochadel, daughter of Joannes & Anna Maria of Bavaria. Witnesses: Andreas Wagner, Joseph Flick (i.e. Fiecht)."

My Great-Great-Grand Mother, Elizabeth Hochadel - Daumen (wife of John Daumen) is apparently a sister to your Maria Eva "Mary" above.

Any chance you have birth and death dates (and places) for their parents, Martin Johann Hochadel and Anna Maria Fiecht of of Trippstadt, Germany?

Would very much appreciate your help.

Mike Rastatter - krastatter@hotmail.com

Hochadel Families of Erie County, New York

I am reseraching two Hochadel families who migrated from the Trippstadt and Elmstein towns of the Rhien-Pflaz region of Germany to the Swormiville/ Williamsvile, Erie County, New York area. The migrations apparently all occured around 1852. My Hochadels married into the Daumen clans.

Specifically I am interested in the following folks:

Magdalena Hochadel (may have also been called Margaretha) who married John Jacob Daumen. She died Aug 18, 1868 in Swormville, Erie County, New York. Who were her parents? When was she born? They had a son John Daumen who married, as luck would have it, Elizabeth Hochadel (1833 - 1919).

Elizabeth's parents were Martin Johann Hochadel and Anna Maria "Mary" Fiecht (born between 1799 - 1803 and died in Erie County before 1880). When was Martin Hochadel born? Whe and where did he die? How about his wife Mary?

There were lots of Hochadels and Fiechts in Erie County, many with the same given names, I am having much trouble sorting them out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike Rastatter - krastatter@hotmail.com

Hi,

I have an Elizabeth Hochadel of Swormville, NY (born in Octber 1833). She married John Dauman / Daumen (probably) at St. Mary's in 1855. Census records state that she arrived in the US in 1852.

I took a look at the ships manifest for the March 1852 arrival of John Hochadel and family.

I of course did not see an Elizabeth, but there is a Johaniss age 19 noted as a Female. Like census records these are notoriously incorrect. I'm wondering about your thoughts.

Is perhaps the Johaniss listed really Elizabeth (the age works) or is it that Johnny was just missed.

Your thoughts?

Mike Rastatter - krastatter@hotmail.com

Hi Katie,

My Elizabeth Hochandel married John Dauman in Erie County, New York about 1855. The family is listed in the 1860 and 1870 Census' of Clarence, Erie County, New York. By 1880, the census lists the family in Williamsville, Erie County. They are also listed there in the 1900 census.

Their children included John (married Catherine Nussbaum), Whilhelmina / Josephine (first married a Diehl), Benjamin (or Barhhart), Mary Ann (who married a Batt), as well as Martin, Joseph, Peter, Therisa (who married James Ross) and daughter Elizabeth who married William Ziehl.

Elizabeth Hochadel was born in Oct 1833 in Bavaria and arrived in the US in 1852 (according to the 1900 census). She is listed as a widow in the 1910 Census of Buffalo.

Any idea who Elizabeth Hochandel's parents were?

Then had many children, one of the youngest was Frank. Swormivlle is a hamlet of Amherst NY in Erie County. Some of the family lived in the next town over, Pendleton. This is in Niagara County.
I have found the immigration record of the John Hochadel family from Swormville, NY, dated Mary 27, 1852. Arrived in America from Holland on the ship Albert Gallatin departing from Liverpool, England. My connection is the son Johnny who married Anna Maria (Mary) Besch about 1863. If you're a long-lost cousin please email me at makraf128@yahoo.com.

John, Hochadel	age 53	farmer	German
Magdalena 50
Christina 23
Johnny 19
Catharina 15
Maria 11
Anna 9
Martin 7
Source: New York.
Some more Hochadel information

My name is Bill Danso, and I think I can give you guys some really good information on the Hochadel family. My grandmother, who is 84 right now, is Louise Hochadel who grew up in Albion, PA. Her father was Frank, I believe and was from the same family that you guys were discussing on a geneology message board I ran across. I'm away from home right now, but she has some old family bibles that I know have family trees in them, because I've looked at them before. She also has a good knowledge of the Hochadel side of the family and knows most of the cemeteries where people are buried. I'm just trying to think quickly right now, and it's late, so I'll have to get back to you with more information. My father still owns land in Albion, and I spend a fair amount of time there. I'm confident I could even give a good tour of the area. My family is located in the Cortland, Ohio area now (near Warren) and I'm going to school in Cleveland, se I'm fairly close to where all the family history seems to be. I also work at a music store, and there was a Peggy Hochadel that taught violin lessons there for a while who was working on our family tree too. I'm fairly confident that we are all related somehow, and I'm excited about finding this. My family seems to be shrinking rather quickly. I hope to hear from you all soon.
Phyllis
It was interesting to note that you said that you were told your ancestors dropped the "von" from the surname when they came here from Germany; I was told that about mine, also. I just wonder if your ancestor Pete was a cousin of my ancestor. His name was Mathias who was married to Fannie Erhman. They settled in Albion, PA and raised five children: Joseph, Frances, Nora, Frank, and Rose. Joseph is my ggrandfather; he married Rosa Gramlich; they had five children: Joseph, John, Frank, Raymond and Leo (died as a small child). Joseph is my grandfather; he married Mildred Davis and they had four children: James (died in France during WWII), Joseph (my father), Sally, and Robert. Perhaps we can find a link?

My g-grandfather was Joseph H Hochadel (27 Jun 1868) Albion, PA, USA. His parents were: Mathias Hochadel (1842) somewhere in Germany and Fannie Erhman (1853) somewhere in Germany.
Hello Mary,

I have never had a reply from Katie, but I'm still able to help you out a bit.

The name "Hochadel" does really literally mean "High Noble" (hoch=high, Adel=noble/nobility). I am not sure how you in the US pronounce it, though.

I have heard of Hochadel wine, but wouldn't think it was specific to an area. But I am sure I can find out for you.

I am from Heidelberg in SW Germany, so that's not too far away from Wiesbaden either. There are quite a few of that name in the Palatine area, some of them distant relatives of mine. There is a travel company ("Hochadel Reisen") & a car dealer called Hochadel & somehow related to me as well.

As far as I am aware, my ancestors were French noble Huguenots who fled France about 300 years ago, settled in SW Germany & subsequently changed their name from their French titles to Hochadel (in addition to changing their religion). There used to be a family tree, but it got lost during the war, which is a shame.

Do you know from which region your husband's ancestors came?

If you would like me to try & find out some more details, please feel free to email me on alba@onetel.net.uk.

Regards,
Stephanie

Hello Katie;
I am interested in the Hochadel name.
My husband and I visited in Germany and you are right, the name always got a reaction. We have been told the meaning of the name, but I would like to have your information.
Thank you for sharing.
My husband was Charles B Hochadel Jr. His father was Charles Sr. and the Charles Sr.s' father was Casper Hochadel who came to the US from Germany.
We found some "Hochadel" wine in Weisbaden. I was told that the "Hochadel" on the label was in reference to the area
and not the name of the wine.
Any info you have will be appreciated.
Hi Mary, Thanks for the info. I'm a little confused with part of it. You said Fannie Hochadel died in 1919; I have her death in 1918 (but if you have the death record, you've got the correct date). You said Matthias died in 1970, which would make him well over 100 years old. Is there another Mathias in the family? I also have a newspaper article (Girard News 20 Feb 1953) which ran the obituary for Joseph H Hochadel, "oldest of a family of nine and a son of Mathias and Fanny Hochadel".
It lists his sons: Frank, Joseph, and John, his brother: Frank and three sisters: Rose Carbine, Nora Shauberger and Fanny Grossman. I found this interesting since you said that Casper had a daughter: Maude Hochadel-Shauberger.
I would love to see the photo of Jenny Hochadel. I have a beautiful photo of Joseph H Hochadle (Mathias' son) and his beautiful wife, Rosa Gramlich Hochadel.
Later, Penny

Hello Penny;
What I have for Fanny Hochadel is a church bulliten for a mass for her. If you have 1918 as the date of death then this is probally a memorial mass for her. Your record is probally
right.
I am familiar with all the names that you have mentioned, but I will check with some of the other family members to verify if they were cousins
Chuck and I were married in 1967 and uncle Matt died about a year afterwards.
Penny, Thanks for your reply.
Here is a little information. I have heard Charles Bernard Hochadel,Sr. speak of Francis, Nora and Rose. Also grandma Erhman, Joseph and Frank. They were indeed from Conneautville, Pa. I believe that Joe Pronouned his name as
OH-odel. Caspers family pronounced it Hock-adel.
Casper had, Matthias, Edward, Charles Bernard Sr. June Hochadel-Hamilton, Maude Hochadel-Shauberger.
I have the death record from the church for Fannie Hochadel, died Nov. 28, 1919.Casper Hochadel died Aug. 15, 1922. Matthias died June 21,1970. Jennie Hochadel, Casper's wife, diedOct. 19, 1943. Frank Hochadel died Oct. 28, 1969
Charles Bernard Hochadel Sr. died Oct. 11, 1976. June Hochadel-Hamilton died May 19, 1971.
I have not gotten all the info together, but this info was easy access so I wanted to send it on to you. I have here a photo of Jenny Hochadel and another lady that I can't recall her name at the moment. I believe it is grandma Ehrmann, but I will have to see if I have a copy with her name on the back.
Casper lived on Juanita road in Albion and Charles Bernard Sr.
built his home across the road from his father. The Hochadel family is buried in Conneaut. Charles Sr. wanted to be buried there too, but Mary, wanted to be brought to Florida where
their survivors lived.
Until later,
Mary Hochadel
(widow) of Charles Bernard Hochadel Jr..

Penny;
I believe that your Matthias would be a brother to Casper.
They were the imagrants. If Joseph was the son of Matthias and Joseph was born 1868, then Matthias would have been born aprox. 1848.
Charles Bernard Hochadel Sr. was born 1886? ( I have to ck that)I know that his brother, Matt was the oldest and Charles was the youngest of Caspers children. I'll get back to you
after I do some research.
Mary

Hi, Mary,
My great-grandfather, Joseph H Hochadel, was born on 27 June 1868, in Albion, PA. His father was Mathias Hochadel. Could this Mathias be the Matthew (Matt) you listed?
Penny

HOCHADELS

I received information via e-mail today from my cousin Sherry in TN who has done some extensive research on her family & also part of my father's family - HOCHADEL.

My great grandparent, immigrated from Germany. Where they landed in the US - I have no idea. When they arrived here it was said they dropped the "VON" part of the Hochadel name. Reading the mesaages & names on the posting board brings up faint memories of some discussions & various names.

My great grandfather's name was Pete or Peter, & I think was married to Sarah.

My grandfather was Joseph Hochadel, (deceased before I was born,) was married to Catherine. He had brothers and sisters, I can't remember all the names but sisters were Sarah, Lena, Mary, & Elizabeth. I believe a brother was killed in war. If memory is correct, there were 8 children in all.

My aunts & uncles - Joseph & Catherine's children were:
Joseph, William Francis, James Reynolds (my dad), Charles Milton (died in WWII,) Robert and Jane.

All of the family members mentioned above settled in, Clark County, Indiana. I noticed on the board a mention of a Sarah being married in Clark County, KY. It could have been Clark County, IN instead of KY.

All of the above family is now deceased, except for William (Bill) Hochadel. He to is in ailing health & is 81.

I would very much like to get information since most of the elder generation on my dads side of the family appear to be deceased or unknown.

I do know there are Hochadel's in OH & NY & FL. None seem to have information that connect my dad's side of the family to them. There are many Hochadel cousins & their siblings/children remaining in the IN & KY area. Any information you have, would be appreciated.
I just started with the family search and saw your message. I am a Hochadel from the Girard OH area. Father Joseph Edward H, grandfather Joseph Martin H. From there I have no more info. My dad had three siblings: James who died during WWII, Robert who was a pharmasist and lived in FL last I heard, and a sister Sarah who died around 1982. My father maried Margaret Smith, my grandfather married Mildred Davis. Does this help any? Can anyone give me any help?

I am a great-great granddaughter to Christina Hochadel. Her father's name was Benjamin. She married Henry Thering. At one time they were from Buffalo. Niagara County sounds very familiar. Then they moved to Michigan. Could this possibly be any relation? Please let me know. Thanks!
Jane Cronin (timcroni2@uact.edu) 454 S.
