I wanted to get in touch with this board about my last name, Hocutt. I have never met my father, alothough I would love to be able to find him, I was curious about my hertiage on his side. In the 10 minutes I have been reading this site I have read that "Hocutt" is German or English. My father had dark brown curly hair which to me doesnt seem to be a german trait. He lived in Mississippi in 1984- is there a certain family line that was in Mississippi? All I have read was Alabama and NC... Just looking for some info, randomly curious...

Anonymous - did it state who Dona's mother is? Was it Jessie Mae Green? If so, then my family tree is related to yours.
I too have a William Hocutt born about 1880 married Jessie Mae Green who was born May 5, 1884 in Missouri and was married 1900 in Missouri.
There were 7 children in the family; 1 boy Otto and 6 girls - Laura, Myrtle, Dona, Media aka Meda, Maryanne, and Leona.
Laura married Preston Hedgecock and finally ended up in Illinois. If you know of this family or if you are related, please contact me at illady45@hotmail.com

I am trying to determine which family in North Carolina my William Hokett of Morgan county Alabama came from. His wife is Nancy, and per the 1850 census hewas born in NC about 1805. Living nearby in Morgan County is Benjamin Hokett about 10 years younger than William. Benjamin and William patented land the same year which is further evidence that they probably came to AL together. Any ideas?
Linda

Do you know if Edward Hocuts wife was Dicy? I found a female head of household named Dicy Hokett in Morgan county 1850 census with a 10 year old son. Nearby is William and Nancy Hokett and Benjamin Hokett on another farm in Morgan County. I think that William and Benjamin are related since they patented land the same year. I cannot figure out what family they came out of in NC. Any ideas.
Linda

I am interesting in your ancestors Edward and Benjamin that came into Alabama. I am searching for the father of William Hocutt born in NC and in the 1850 census in Morgan County Alabama. Nearby in Morgan County was Benjamin Hokett and Dicy (female head of household) Hokett. I think that all of these families are probably related but I cannot find a clue as to how they are related. Wm, Benjamin, and Dicy all stated on the census that they were born in NC. Do you have any clues.

You are correct there are a lot of Hocutts in the Middlesex area. My uncle was named Dempsey Hocutt and my father was James Thomas Hocutt both of Middlesex. My father dad was William Hocutt they call him Bill.

b

w

I'm a Hokit, and my family is from Southeast Oklahoma. My grandparents Sherman and Melba Hokit were born, I believe right near the border of the Cherokee and Choctaw nations, but my father is from Buffalo Valley, Oklahoma. My uncle,Joseph Hokit, has done research and on our ancestry and has found a connection to Hocutt's from North Carolina. I believe back in the early 1700's.

Questions re: George HOCUTT and Agrippa HOCUTT, Tuscaloosa AL

I am looking for the parents of Nancy Lyon or Lyons who was born about 1809 in Georgia, and married George Hocutt on 6 August 1927 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. I am a decendant of their son, Agrippa Jackson Hocutt. I believe I once saw a reference somewhere to Castelton Lyon being her father, but I have found no evidence that he had any daughters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I noticed in the 1880 Census for Tuscaloosa, AL, that Agrippa Hocut is listed with a wife named Elizabeth. Mary Baker Hocutt died in 1875. In the 1860 Census, Mary's sister, Elizabeth Baker, is listed as living with them (for some reason Agrippa is listed in this census as Amos). My guess is that after the death of Mary, Agrippa married his sister-in-law. Can anyone provide information on who this wife Elizabeth was?

Hello, Would be interested in hearing from someone from the Robert Hocutt b. about 1818 SC and Anna Bryant line. They came to Walker Co. Al and had the following children: Jane b.1846, Mary 1848, Margaret 1849, John 1851, Gabriel 1853, Jackson 1856, Sarah 1859. Jane, I believe to be my ggggrandmother and was married to Parks M. Hall and a second marriage to James E. Cranford. I would like to hear from this family as they seemed to have disappeared. Liz

Re: Origin

Hi,
Most, if not all, Hocutts, in this country, are descended from two brothers, John and Edward Howcott, who were first reported in NE North Carolina around 1700. Several variations in spelling occured. These include Hocot, Hocut, Hocott, Hoket, and others. There are still a few people, in this country who still spell their name as Howcott. I have read that an early Hocutt spelling was by my Benjamin Hocutt (my ancestor) about 1800.

Benjamin's brother, Edward Hocutt moved to Alabama about 1820. There are a lot of Hocutts in Alabama today and most are probably descended from this Edward Hocutt.

About 1820 an Edward

Gary, I believe you are correct that all the Hocutt's, Hokit's, Hokitt's, Hoket's in America are all related. I am related through one of the Edward's decendants. Two brothers went off to Tennessee, then Missouri, Texas, Ark and then Oklahoma. I don't believe either of them ever returned to N.C. In fact, I read a paper from one of the Archives that stated that the family lost track of these two. Anyway, their name became Hoket, Hokit, or Hokitt. It is still spelled Hokit by the decendants here in Oklahoma and California. I would love a picture of Zachariah as I know he is an ancestor.
