YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – Mr. William P. Hodge passed away Friday, July 5, 2013.
William “Bill” was born May 3, 1921, in Campbell, Ohio the son of the late James and Willa Mae (Ferguson) Hodge.
He was a 1939 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, where he played the saxophone in the band and orchestra. Bill was a long time member of the Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Bill was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the World War II from 1943 to 1945, where he served in Italy.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1985 after 38 years.
During his time of service, he received several commendations, including the Superior Achievement Award, for continuously exceeding performance expectations.
Bill was married to the late Betty (Benford) Hodge, who passed away June 30, 2009.
Married Sept. 30, 1947, Bill and Betty celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997.
Bill devoted many loving years caring for his wife after her illness.
In his spare time, Bill could be found in the kitchen baking cakes, pies and cookies for his grandchildren and friends. Not only will he be remembered for his loving and calm demeanor, but for his infectious spirit.
Bill will be dearly missed by his son, Philip B. (Catherine) Hodge of Liberty, OH; daughter, Michele L. (Jesse) Dukes of Atlanta; sisters, Flora Hodge of Campbell, Delores Lee of Dayton and Shirley (Lewis) Long of Woodbridge, Va.; brother, Kenneth (Marilyn) Hodge of Campbell; grandchildren, Terrence Hodge, Shanna Hodge-Cargill, Brian Dukesa and Ericka Dukes; great-grandson Tyler Cargill; sister-in-law, Barbara J. Betters; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by brother, Wesley Hodge; sisters, Helen Bell, Mildred Tenney and Grace Hill; and friend, Woodrow McMullen.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. William P. Hodge will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown.
The family will receive friends Friday, one hour prior to the services at the church.
