Etta Mae (Hodge, Jarvis) Norman - Youngstown, Ohio

BOARDMAN, OH – We have lost another member of the “Greatest Generation.” Etta Mae (Hodge, Jarvis) Norman passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, surrounded by her family.

Etta was born and raised on Fruit Street on Youngstown’s eastside, the only child of Robert A. Hodge (1900–1978) and Etta Mae (Jester) Hodge (1904–1963).
She was born Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1923, and spent her formative years growing up during the depression.

She graduated from East High School and was employed at Ohio Bell as a telephone operator during World War II.

She married combat wounded veteran Lee R. “Bud” Jarvis at the end of the war, and they had two children, a son, Bob, and a daughter Beverly. Etta was widowed in 1963 and re-entered the work force as the telephone operator at the J.C. Penney’s in the Boardman Plaza.

In 1974, she married Daniel Norman, who passed away in 1995 leaving three stepchildren and their families. They enjoyed their retirement, traveling and living in Largo, Fla., for a few years before returning to the Youngstown area.

From childhood, Etta was a long-time member of the Grace Methodist Church and has been a loyal member of the Lockwood United Methodist Church for many years.
She was active in the Miriam Circle at the church, the J.C. Penney retirees club, and was a former Hospice volunteer.

She will also be remembered for her quick wit and devotion to her family, never missing an opportunity to visit her family and her dear lady friends.

Etta is survived by her daughter, Beverly Jarvis of Struthers, Ohio; a son, Robert L and wife Mary Ann of Fairfax Station, Va.; four grandchildren, Andrew Pavis, Dean Jarvis, both of Boardman, Ohio, Erika (CWOS Vince) Pope, USMC of Stafford, Va., and Bobby (Anna) Jarvis of Friendswood, Texas; and five great-grandchildren, Vivian Pope, Joshua Pope, Bowdy Jarvis, Bailey Jarvis, and Tucker Jarvis.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Lockwood United Methodist Church, 4570 Lockwood Blvd. in Boardman, on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at noon.

The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the Lockwood United Methodist Church, 4570 Lockwood Blvd., Youngstown, OH 44511; or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512-2198 in memory of Etta.

Please visit www.Thompsonfh1932.com to view this notice and send condolences.

Arrangements are being handled by Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. in Boardman.

Mahoning

I am searching for family currently in Cornwall UK as I am coming to visit in June 2013. Our family has been traced to Sampson HODGE born at Trigidden 1812. His son John (married Mary Gilbert of Mellion) migrated to Australia in 1856.Two of his brothers, Joseph and William stayed in Cornwall. I would like to hear if any decendants are still in the area.
Thanking you, Elaine.

Re: Frederick A. Hodge

Frederick Hodge was my grandfather; my mother was his eldest surviving daughter, Dorothy Ann Hodge Shaw (b 1903 in Martinsburg WVa). (One older daughter, Catherine, died in infancy.)
His other children were Frederick Arthur
Grace Gay
Mildred Martha
and you know about Edward and Kitty (who was originally Katherine Bagby, but changed her name to Kitty B.)
Frederick had one daughter
Grace (m Charles Stewart-Patterson) had two daughters, Ann and Barbara (Stewart-Patterson). Ann passed away last year, with three children.
Barbara and her husband Barron Mills live in Asheboro, NC and have three daughters.
Mildred (m. Emory Knapp) had three children, Roberta, Charles and Mildred - of whom, the only one I know of who is alive is Mildred (m. Sampson Sanders) and lives in NY state.
Edward married Prudence Hemenway and they had two children - Kenyon Bagby Hodge and Sarah. Ken lives outside of Boston and Sarah, I think, lives in Arizona. Ken has three daughters and Sarah has two sons and a daughter.
Kitty married Dr. R. Andre Kling: they had no children. She passed away in approximately 1995.
My mother married Philip H. Shaw; they had me - no sibs. She passed away in 1980.
I don't know if you know about Frederick's father - Elizer Asa Hodge - he was in the Civil War (2nd CT Volunteers Heavy Artillery) and after his unit was stationed outside of Washington for several years, they were sent south when Grant took control and their first battle was at Cold Harbor. They also participated in the Shenandoah Valley campaign, and at Petersburg, Saylers Creek and Appomattox. He died in 1930 in Washington and is buried at Arlington.
And, by the way, I'm Virginia Shaw Collins married to L. Kimble Collins and we live on Cape Cod. If I can give you any other information, just let me know.
How far back have you traced the family?

William Hodge CVity Marshal in Pontiac, IL

My great-grandfather was William Hodge who was killed in the line of duty as a City Marshal in Pontiac, Illinois on the 25th of July 1890. He was married to Mary Daley according to he obituary. Mary was accompanied by her brother Dan Daley of Kansas City. I am trying to find his parents. I have some info that his father was also named William and may have been married to a Rhoda (last name unknown).

Grandma Radie was my Great Grandmother, her daughter was Laura and her daughter was my mother Margaret. I have pictures of her if you are interested and have and can get more info. It can get confusing because of name changes that occured over time.

Thomas Witherspoon Smith was born in North Carolina according to his children's Census reports. It could have been what is now Eastern Tennessee. He was born May 11, 1786. He married Rebekah (or Rebecca) Mitchell in Jonesborough, Washington County (then State of Franklin), Tennessee. Hope this helps.

Hello!

I'm looking for information on William Thomas Hodge and his wife Bettie (or Belli?) S. Garrett Hodge and Effie Childers Hodge (he was married 2x). William's parent's names were Hamilton Hodge and Tilda Dean Hodge. The trail runs cold at William and his wives. I do have a death certificate, but am unsure where he was born, where he was buried, etc. If anyone has additional info, I'd appreciate it!
