My Granmother, Annie Dawson Harrison (Ibbotson) was friends with a Frederick Hodkinson, who was listed as a Boarder in the 1901 census, living at Ivy Cottage, Ludworth Glossop, England. He was 25 at the time, so born 1876 or thereabouts. According to my Grandmother when she was alive, Fred travelled a lot and took many trips to Canada (although it could have been the US). Each time he went he took one of his sisters with him and eventually he settled there himself. That's the story. I'm not sure if it's right because we have an old travelling chest in our bathroom which we were always told was his. It has always been known as 'Fred's Box' in our family. Inside is his death certificate. I will open it again one day soon and look closely at the date he died.
Fred lived at Ivy Cottage and my Grandmother moved there to be looked after by the head of the house, John Dawson, when her parents died. She was just 5 when Frederick was 25.
If anyone knows anything about any of these family names I would love to hear from you,

I've just started out tracing my family's history, I would like to hear from anyone who has got any information on this lady. She is my great grand-ma, who was married to a Charles Henry Marples, they got married in the Sheffield Cathedral on 21st May 1893. They had 2 son's Willie Marples b-1896 & Charles b- 10/07/1905 ( my grand-dad ). Willie died in action in the 1st world war & is buried at Etaples in France. Annie's father was called William & he worked as a striker.

I think you may be right - there is actually a record on Ancestry for Agnes for Goldenhill, Stafford c1858 which I think is very close to Longton Stoke on Trent.

My John Hodgkinson was born about 1855 in Ohio and moved to Adrian, Michigan to farm. He died about 1934. His spouse was Augusta and they had a son Arthur. Let me know if any of this info is in your family.

Does anyone have any knowledge or information about an Agnes Hodgkinson - she was born in Longdon near Stafford in 1857.

She was a Great Grandmother of mine married to Herbert Ernest Haycock - he was a Carpenter/Joiner born in Brereton Rugeley in 1862.

The UK census information on her is a bit conflicting - the 1881 census records show her as born in Longdon, but there is currently no record of an Agnes Hodgkinson on 1861 and 1871 records relating to Longdon.

Does anyone have any info about her ancestors?

Do you happen to have any knowledge or information about an Agnes Hodgkinson - she was born in Longdon near Stafford in 1857.

This is a long time after your post in 2003 but I hope you read this.

My husband's great aunt, Josephine Hodgkinson nee Arnold-Jones married Conway Hodgkinson around 1930 and I believe they had a daughter, Victoria, who died in infancy. Although we are not directly related to Con it would be so interesting to have some more information about him. We have a book by "solicitor" which is why we realise the connection to Con.

Are you able to let us have any more information about him? We'd be really grateful as we are beginning to build a family tree for the Arnold-Jones'. Many thanks.

Wow! I have been researching this family for a little while now and you have come up with names I've never heard or seen in the family tree. You could really be of help to me, but I don't know how much I could actually help you, as it seems you have a much bigger jump start than I do. Lucille Hodgkinson Hummel is my Grandmother. Are you by any chance, the Wilf who once did the one named study for Hodgkinson's? My Dad (Frank) and his twin (Ernest), where born in the registration district of Nantwich June 1925. They had 2 older brothers Edgar Ralph born 1919 and Leonard born 1921. Thier mothers maiden name was Faulkner. I have lots of info on the Cheshire Hodgkinson's, especially in the Acton, Bunbury and Nantwich area. Parents where Leonard and Annie married 1913. Willing to share info with you.

Pat Very interested in your reply. I have considerable records but couldnt find the marriage c.1840 The only twins I can see in 1925 are Arthur & walter H in Blackburn Mother's surname was Pickup. I am also a twin as you will find in freebmd 1930 march. Was your family in Kingston-on-Soar?

Hi With regard to your enquiry about Hodgkinson twins, my father was on of twin boys born in 1925. He died in 2000, but my uncle still lives. The where un-identical, so much so that my uncle is not at all like my dad and their 2 older brothers, he has the red hair gene from my grandmothers side. Also may have a link with my H's and the Gould family. I have a Thomas H on my tree marrying a Caroline Gould in about 1840. She was from Blaby Leics. Their son James born 1842 was a gardener in Kingstone Notts.

Only just read your posting about George Hodkinson. My grandfather was that George, I believe. He was born in 1854/5, brother of Alfred and James. He married a Martha Birchinall in 1877 at St. Mary's Reddish, Stockport. How are you related. They had only 2 daughters - Mary Elizabeth 1878 and my grandmother, Edith, 1886.

William Hodgkinson married Harriot(t) Payne about 1840. Daughter, Harriott Eliza Hodgkinson born 1849 in London (St Pancras). This daughter was a musician and singer and she emigrated to Australia. I imagine there would be other children from this marriage.

Many thanks for your prompt reply to my posts and for your time. I don't think the baby born in 1841 made it. The whole family emigrated to Australia 1850/51 (still sourcing that info.) and I've been able to account for their deaths in Melbourne, Victoria.

Ellen Hodgkinson was my great grandmother. We have her marriage certificate of 1876, Ashford Middlesex to William Gibbs. It shows her father as Robert Hodgkinson. This is all we know. Unfortunately census form show her birthplace as: 1901 - London. 1891 Lancs " looks like Applebois" and 1881 Liverpool ! Can anyone help with earlier years ?

I read your posting on Robert Hodgkinson with interest. My great grandfather William Gibbs, married Ellen Hodgkinson b 1853 at Ashford in 1876. On the wedding certificate her father is shown as Robert Hodgkinson - Engine driver. In 1903 a John Hodgkinson is a witness to Ellen's daughter's marriage in Chelsea. My problem has been tracking Ellen's parents because census forms have three different places of birth for her ie London, Liverpool and Lancashire. All we knew was that he was Robert and an engine driver. Your Robert looks as if he could be our man with 4 links :- Robert, engine driver, London and John.Can we exchange whatever details we have ? How exciting to think that we may have a link. It certainly looks promising.

Robert Hodgkinson - engine drive - was my mother's Gt.Grandfather and he had a daughter called Ellen. According to me she was born in Peterboro.
The Hodgkinsons led a very peripatetic lifestyle - the first child was born in Rouen, France, others in Peterboro and then latterly in Battersea, London.

Their youngest living child was John - also employed by the railway - he went on to have 5 or 6 daughters !

My Grandmother was a Hodgkinson and her mother was a Longnecker. They lived in Castalia. I have just started this search and I don't have very much on my family. My Great Grandpa was Edward Hodgkinson. Can you help me get started on some names? My GGrandparents are Edward and Ida Jennybelle Hodgkinson, her mother, Emana, and Ida has a brother, Henry. These are the only names I have so far. Any help would be apprciated. Thank you.

Its Wilf again! Go to rootsweb.. click Family Trees. enter Edward Hodgkinson... there are about 6 pages but go thru and look out for an Edward born 1850 Worsester. Submitted by Timothy Hodgkinson... the chap I was in touch with. A lot of info so check children etc and you will find your Hummel family. You should have found 2 Edward families in the 1880 census... father & son. For their entry to USA visit gardenisland website about 1872/3

Hallo. I am Wilf Hodgkinson... not a relative but I have been researching the Hs for about 45 years!! I was in touch with an H of the Sandusky family. LDS stand for Latter Day Saints = The Mormon Church. Go to their website and then the US census 1880... enter Edward Hodgkinson to see his family. Its also poss to find his US entry. I will have to trawl thru my files to find his marriage. Look on google maps to find Pipe Ridware in Staffs. If you need help just ask but give me time to look things up!!

Am having problems with ancestry... I've no idea whats happening!! I looked for your first message this afternoon but could not find it. So I sent out two messages... containing the same info. But I do know a great deal about your family so please email me. William Thomas died in 1888 aged 75 son of William. Harriet died in 1884 age 64. I have their marriage cert. William was s/o Samuel H. a slater. In 1851 William had a thriving business with 11 workmen. Was it gold that tempted him to Victoria?! I cannot find him or family on any shipping list. But I have data on his family in Oz. Have happy memories of Melbourne 45 years ago!!

Go to Family Trees and enter Joseph Hummel with marriage to Lucille Hodgkinson.. this person also appears on the Hodgkinson lists but has a different ID to Tim. You should be able to trace your German line as well. But if you need any more help with the Hs please email me

William Thomas Hodgkinson died in 1888 Prince Albert Hospital age 75 son of William. Harriet died 1884in Carlton age 64. I have their marriage cert which shows his father was Samuel, a slater. In 1851 they lived at 38 Swinton St, Grays Inn Road. He was a Master Slater employing 11 men. Did Gold attrract them to Victoria? I wonder. Sent this message to Kate earlier today but it seems to have vanished. Pse email if you would like more info.

Look at my message in 2006. Also look on the LDS website for US census 1880 and enter Edward Hodgkinson. His wife's surname was Greatrix. He came from Ridware in Staffordshire.a group of tiny villages you will find on google maps

One of their twin sons Thomas, Marr. Ann Tomkinson 6 Aug 1827 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. One of their sons John, Marr. Caroline Steele 21 Feb. 1853 in Penkhull. S-on-T
One of their sons John, Marr. Louisa Hutchinson in Colchester Essex in 1880 when he was in the army stationed there. If anyone else is researching this same family I would be most happy if they would please contact me.

i am descended from Thomas Hodgkinson twin brother of John B 1 Sep. 1897 Betchton, Cheshire, England. Parents Samuel H and Mary Haspenhall(Aspenall) from Nothwich. Thomas married Ann Tomkinson 6 Aug. 1827 in Stoke on Trent, Staffs. One of their two sons, John, M. Caroline Steele 21 Feb. 1853 in Stoke on Trent. Their son John, M. Louisa Hutchinson in Colchester, Essex Sep.1883. If any one else is researching this family I would be most pleased to hear from you.

Arnold Clifford Hodgkinson

I'm not having much luck in tracing my family tree!!!! My Granfather was Arnold Clifford Hodgkinson, the family owned a hotel in Bournemouth and I believe he disgraced the family by getting one of their young chambermaids pregnant and was disowned (hence the difficulty). They originated from the North. I have no information on sibling or parentage and would be grateful if someone has come across Arnold to forward some information! He died in the 80's having relocated to Somerset to live near my Father and Auntie.

I'm not from Sheffield (sorry!) still living in sunny Bournemouth!
As I say dates are a little sketchy! He died in the early 80's in Midsomer Norton, Nr. Bath, Avon although I was young, I do remember visiting the funeral directors and I'm sure this was in Bournemouth! (As I say, I could be mistaken) My Grandmother was of French origin, but came from Ireland, which is where she returned and died in the early 90's (I think this was Wrexford). She fell pregnant at 16 and her first child was my Auntie (MARY) and then had my Father (KEVIN)he is 64 years old...(Approx). There are a handful of Hodgkinson's in the phone book here but not many. I have a feeling they came from the Blackpool area, again having been in the hotel trade. He worked at the local teacher training college as a caretaker when they lived in Bournemouth, but I am really drawing blanks from all angles trying to progress any further!

i am looking for info. on John Hodgkinson supposed to have been born 1750 London, England. He went to the states and fought as a United Empire Loyalist with his brother william and I think a Robert. They then came to Canada and settled in Grantham Twp., Lincoln Co., Ont. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
