I've just discovered that my G Grandmother was Roseatta Hodgkiss who married William Thomas in 1856 in Dudley, Worcesterhire. I'm not positive but think Roseatta was the daughter of Thomas and Martha Hodgkiss, b. 28 Feb 1825 in Peel By Bolton, Lancashire. Roseatta and William had children William, Rosanna or Rozana, Philip, Herbert (b. 2/1870), Alice Marie, Mable, Adaline, and one unnamed or unknown named. It appears that they were in the US before 1871. Any similarities? I'm so excited that I finally have Roseatta (and it may be Rosetta)'s surname.
Nancy

Hello Pamela, I am delighted you have replied. Let me first say I stand corrected. Last evening I examined tracyscattergood's email and your reply, and came to the conclusion that the David Hodgkiss I mentioned was in fact Thomas' son and not David's son. Your latest email evidence confirms this. Great!! David and Ivy were my Parents' Uncle and Aunt. You have just given me information of which I was unaware. I am sure you have much more to supplement mine. I have a photo of Ivy May Hodgkiss(nee Owen) taken at my Grandfathers' Double Wedding! Harriet Hodgkiss, their cousin (I guess this is Thomas' daughter), is a witness on one of their Marriage Certificates. My email address is: petermachin@snaefellpark.freeserve.co.uk
By the way my line of descent is as follows: Peter Machin b1945---------William Machin b1917 & Marjorie Machin(nee Machin) b1920---------John Hancock Machin b1885 & David Hancock Machin b1883------ Susannah Owen(Hodgkins/Hodgkinson/Machin/Hodgkiss) b1855------John Hodgkiss/Hodgkins/Hodgkinson b1818 & Harriet Monks b1825 ------I can go back even further.
I look forward to hearing further from you.

Hi Peter, My Grandad and all but one of his siblings moved to the Whitwell area. David who I always believed to be Grandad's brother and Ivy lived, died and buried in Creswell. David in 1958 and Ivy 1996. I will be happy to exchange email addresses for further information. It sounds as if you have been doing research for many years. I class myself as a novice. My brother still lives in Whitwell and also many cousins.

Hello Pamela, this a correction! Thomas was born in Burslem(see 1861, 1871, and 1901 census) as were his older brothers George and William, and younger sister Susannah. By 1861 the family were living at 41, King Street, Fenton. The other siblings,Harriet,David,John,Edwin(later known as Edward),and Aaron were all born at 41 King Street, Fenton.

Hello Pamela, Ivy May Owen married David Hodgkiss(a cousin)who I think was the son of David Hodgkiss(a brother to your Thomas and my Susannah). Some of their descendants still live in the Whitwell area. There were two cousin Davids. I am now looking at the Genealogical Table I have drawn up, and I can see your Grandfather who was a cousin of my two Grandfathers. I have to say that only three of John and Harriet's children were registered at birth(the last three - John, born 1862, Edwin, born 1866, and Aaron, born 1870. They were given the surname "Hodgkinson". John and Aaron re-adopted the surname "Hodgkiss" on marriage). Your Thomas was born as Thomas Hodgkins in 1852 at 41 King Street, Fenton. He appears as Thomas Hodgkins, age 9 on the 1861 Census, living 41 King Street,Fenton. On the 1871 Census he appears as Thomas Hodkinson(sic) age 19, coal miner, living at 41 King Street, Fenton. In 1881 he appears as Thomas Hodgkiss(with family),and in 1901 he is listed as Thomas Hodgkiss(with family). In the Census Data there are the inevitable Transcriber errors and people often did not know their exact age.
There is much more family information I could give you,but I am reluctant to publish this on the Internet.I would be interested to hear/read what information you have on this Family, including your knowledge of family members in whitwell as this may or may not confirm my own knowledge. To this end I am happy to exchange my email addres with you if you so wish

Hello Peter, I didn't think of looking at the variations on the surname - its all very facinating. So if I have got this correct Ivy May also married her cousin David Hodgkiss, son of Thomas. My grandad was John Hodgkiss born 9th Oct 1879 and my dad also John was his oldest son. I will see if I can find the birth and marriage certificate for Thomas now. Thankyou for your help.

Hello, yes Susannah Machin(nee Hodgkiss)married Isaiah Owen in 1887. Her first husband was William Machin by whom she had a daughter, Mary Ann, in 1874.William died in 1877. She then had two boys who were illegitimate - David Hancock Machin, born in 1883, and John Hancock Machin born in 1885. These were my two Grandfathers ( Mother and Father were cousins ). She had three children by Isaiah - Sarah, Isaiah and Ivy May. Susannah's Parents were John Hodgkiss and Harriet Monks, but the Marriage Certificate(1847 - see Staffordshire BMD ) lists them as John Hodgkins and Harriet Monk. It is a tangled web, but briefly they were known as Hodgkins living at 41 King Street,Fenton. Soon after 1861 they were known as Hodgkinson, and their last three children were registered as Hodgkinson. However, all their nine children except two eventually reverted to the original paternal surname of Hodgkiss, including Thomas. By the way, John Hodgkiss is living next door to his son Thomas at the 1881 census - age given is wrong( 62 and not 52) and place of birth should read as Gnosall where he was born in 1818. Try Harriet Hodkinson for 1881 - Listed as a Widow which is incorrect information!! Naturally, I have a large file of documentation and evidence collected over a number of years, but I hope the above info provides some pointers for you. I am sure you make use of the Census data and other databases. By the way, Thomas Hodgkiss was an uncle to my Grandfathers.
Hi Peter, I was interested to hear that your Great Grandmother was sister to Thomas Hodgkiss who is my Great Grandfather. You say in 2nd message that Ivy May Owen was the daughter of Isaiah Owen and Susannah Hodgkiss. The info that I had previously from my cousin was that Isaiah married Susannah Machin in Stoke on Trent December 1887. We have been unable to trace either a birth certificate or a marriage certificate for Thomas. Any information that you are willing to share re his parents John Hodgkiss and Harriet Monk would be appreciated.

Yes I'll certainly try to find my paperwork. I did a fair amount some years ago but other commitments prevented me from taking it any further and it's all filed somewhere! Just a matter of finding it! It may be that Lillian's middle name was Maud, or Maud's middle name was Lillian, it seems too much of a coincidence to have so many names in common. My maternal grandmother was Mary Ann Hodgkiss and married George Ernest Cowley. They lived in Sabell Road Smethwick and then 10 Union Street Smethwick where they carried on a tailoring business. lillian was definitely the youngest of the children. There should be a photo of her in the Toll House, if it's not been stolen!

My maternal grandmother was Mary Anne Hodgkiss. She certainly was born around that time and place, and I know that she had a sister Caroline and brothers James and William. There was also definitely a sister Lillian but this name does not appear in your list. Lillian's widowed daughter Valerie still lives in the area. I can check and confirm the above, but it will take a little time. FYI they lived at one time in the Old Toll House at Woodsetton (Sedgley) which was taken down brick by brick some years ago and rebuilt at the Black Country Museum at Dudley. My mother is now 96 and remembers spending her summer holidays at Woodsetton. My family loaned some photos and personal belongings to the Black Country Museum to stand in the Toll House but sadly quite a few have been stolen. We haven't even had the good grace of an apology from the museum.

My mothers maiden name is Hodgkiss and I have traced her family back to William Hodgkiss, a carpenter who married Mary Ann Smith in Kidderminster in 1843. Their eldest son was Josiah Mason Hodgkiss born 1844 but died of typhoid in Blackburn in 1861. The family moved from Kidderminster to Wolverley and then to Birmingham.

William Smith, a retired builder died in 1890 and I noted from his will that he also left some furniture given to him by Josiah Mason. The executors of his will were Henry George Moorfield and Abraham Hodgkiss.

I am related to William Hodgkiss's son William Smith Hodgkiss.

Thanks for the reply! I can't find any trace of a Lillian in my lot and I can trace them through the 1871, 1181, 1891, and 1901 censuses. Do you have an address for any of these censuses? I can't find a Lillian Hodgkiss in any of them. I'd much appreciate it if you could do some more research.

Strangely enough I've been round that Toll House in the Black Country Museum without realising its Hodgkiss connection.

I am trying to find out what happened to John Hodgkiss who was born in Wombwell, Yorkshire in 1898 of parents James and Martha. He survived the Great War at which time he was living in Winterwell Road, Wath upon Dearne but after that there's no trace.

Any information on Hodgkisses in Coseley in the mid 19th century would also be very welcome. The family were John Hodgkiss(b.1842) and his wife Catherine Marsh (b.1845) and their children:

Mary (1864)
Sarah (1865)
Ann (1867)
William (1869)
James (1871)
Caroline (1874)
Elizabeth (1876)
Joseph (1879)
John (1881)
Maud (1884)

David,
I believe my maternal grandmother was sister to your grandfather Albert Edward Hodgkiss. My grandma's name was Amelia Hodgkiss, her mother died at birth and the family appears to have been split between various aunts and uncles. There was another brother Enoch Alfred whom I cannot trace and also Annie Ethel. My Grandma only found her sister when she herself was married. if this is the trail you are looking for please let me know as i have photographs. I also have a very old address for Albert given to me by my mother ( who knows all the family history!) which is 104, Lee Avenue, Toronto. does this ring any bells?

Hi,
I am researching Hodgkiss from Birmingham / Staffs - Mainly from Aston in Birmingham. They had become Hotchkiss between 1808-1835. Prior to 1835 (John Hotchiss) I've reached a bit of a blur. I know that his father was a Joseph Hotchkiss/Hodgkiss who married a Jemima ?. If you think there is anything vaguely resembling these names in your bible/digital thenI would be very interested. My aim is to go back down the Hotchkiss line as far as I can.

Regards
Redwood
