I've recently begun online research about Nicholas HODSDON - HODGDON, his first wife, Esther Wines, then down from their son, Israel.
Hopefully, someone who has been at it longer than I can help clarify something for me. I've seen birth years listed for him that are in the 1604-1615 range. In numerous places I've seen that this Nicholas is listed with a death date of 1704 and that he was killed by Indians. That seemed plausible if he was born at the later end of the range. An elderly man killed by Indians. It happened.
But then last night I came across the following in "The History of Wells and Kennebunk" by Edward E. Bourne. The chapter is talking about the problems with the Indians. Page 258 refers to the spring of 1704, etc. Then the next page says, "On the eleventh of May, Nicholas Cole, together with three soldiers, Nicholas Hodsdon, etc. It goes on to say that the Indians attacked and .... "Hodsdon also was killed..."
This, of course, leads me to the conclusion that "our" Nicholas, husband of Esther Wines, is NOT the Nicholas who was killed by Indians in May 1704. He'd be a bit elderly to be an active soldier. *smile*
That brings up the question of when our Nicholas actually died and who is the Nicholas that was killed by Indians on May 11, 1704?
Thanks so very much for any help you can give. I truly appreciate it.
Happily in Christ,
