Joseph Hof was born in Peoria, Ill. His brother was John William Hof born about 1863, although 1865 in other places. I believe John was the elder brother. Their father was Joseph William Hof, not born in New York but in Bayern, Germany in 1819, I believe. There is an 1880 census record for Joseph Hof, age 61, born 1819, widower, born in Bavaria with one son Joseph age 15. My ancestor is John William Hof.

Hello Kelly,

Hof is a Familyname from Switzerland. The place this familyname comes from is called "Zwingen", there were also a few in a little village called "Laufen". The family history says, that when Hofs imigrated to USA they started to write their name with 2 Fs.

During the second world war nearly half of these 2 villages immigrated to USA (or some to Canada).

They were not all of the same family tree though... ;o)

I just confirmed that there is a Lydia L Hickman Hof in our family that married Joseph Hof and had 7 kids, one of whom was my great grand father, John Willis Hof. He had 6 kids( I dont know his wife's name... ) one of whom was David Hof SR, my grandpa.

My great-great grandpa was a Joseph Hof who married a Lydia(dont know the maiden name) and had a son named John Willis Hof(born in MN). We assumed/heard that Joseph came over from Germany but we arent totally sure. Not sure when or where he was born but 1865 sounds about right.

I am looking for information on Eduard Hof (also been written as Edward Hoff). He was born in Dakota Territory in April 1889. He was one of 19 children of a blended marriage. He was last known to be a witness at his sister's wedding in about 1911 in South Dakota. Family rumors have him going to Chicago and never heard from again. I am interested in learning more about him.

Imagine my shock at finding a relative. There is only one known DeOrdio family that I know of and it started in Norristown PA. I would love to know which one of my many cousins you are. I am the daughter of the late John and Carolyn DeOrdio who lived in Syracuse New York. The brothers George, Joe and John all move to work at Carrier corp. I found your name because I am still searching for more imformation on the DeOrdios. I doubt I could be of much help in your current search but let me know who your parents-grandparents are and I will see if anyone knows anything. Is this a very private matter. My great grandfather lived in Freidrickshaven on Lake Constance near the Austrian border. His wife's maiden name was Heidenreich. My grandfather's name was Frederick Hoff. He came to the U>S> about 1878 and lived aroiund Marrietta, Ohio.
My Grandfather cme qwith His sister who's name was Mary. My father's name was Gilbert Fredrick Hoff. He wasn't a junior. My gandfather was born in 1869 on July 15th and he died in 1935 in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Great Grandfather was Jacob (johann) Hof
Lived in Freidrickshaven, Germany. This city was a port on Lake Constance, which is on the border of both Switzerland and Austria.
Had a Daughter and a son who came to the States about 1878 and settled in Ohio. My father was born in Marriette, Ohio in 1890.
The Hof name was changed to Hoff upon arriving in the States.

ELIZABETH HOF (born about 1857 in Germany) married EMIL GUTZMAN. 1880 Census has them in St. Louis, MO. enumerated with Emils brother Rudolph. Also shows their oldest son Edwin born in MO, but their youngest son Harry born in Texas. Maybe they were just visiting?

I just received this information from someone that does research in the Bavaria area. The church in the next town had this information on my family and Hof was included in it which I never knew.

I don't know if any of them came over to the US but they are in a town just north of Wissembourg.

Does this family, from the Rhine area, sound familiar to anyone.

Franziska eventually married a Michael Burkhard in 1858 and had a son Michael Burkhard. Her son came to the US.

Are they from the Alsace area or you don't know. It's so hard when you run into roadblocks.

Do you know what church they were in when they were living? This may help. Sometimes names and town come up when someone is married. Also, check the cemeteries if you have that info.

Does anyone have information about a Hof that settled in NE Iowa. Looking for my grandmother's family. She was born Marie Barbara in 1877. I don't know where she was born, but the family originated in Alsace Lorraine. There were two sets of children - most of the first set of children died during a flu epidemic. She had a sister, Sarah, but I don't know the names of the other syblings. She married an Albert (A.B.) Schmitz in about 1900. There were many Methodist Episcopal ministers in the family. Yes, I would like to keep in touch. In trying to search for my family, I have purchased some information on Germany, how to find information,etc. Friedrichshofen was in Ingo "Landerkreis" or New County, in Oberbayern, Bavaria (Southern Bavaria) In reading German history, Bavaria was taken over and became part of Germany in 1850 or so. My family fled, because the Prussian King was sweeping Northern Bavaria and massacuring entire villages, to prove the point that they did not want the people to have a say in government, as was the case in Bavaria. If you need information on where to get birth information, let me know.

My great-grandfather came to the US in late 1849 to 1850 from Bavaria. They lived in the Hof Principality. His name was Jacob, had three sons I know of: George F. and attorney and teacher, William Hoff a minister, and Edward Hof a mortician.

Do you have any information on such a family?
