What a terrible shame that his life was cut short! I will add his date of death to the information we have in the Archives at Purdue. I was just working on an entry for him yesterday. I am glad I was able to share a little more information about him with you. I never knew my grandmother, so I know how important even a little information can be.

Take Care,
Mary

This is what I know of HOFFMANN's. Clara was I think a cousin. I know Amelia (Emilia) and Albertine were sisters and had a brother August who lived in SD. Amelia was born 1 Jan 1841 in Germany, and Albettine born 5 Aug 1846 in Germany, and August I don't know. The girls came to the US in 1867. The girls moved to TX and married brothers Fritz and August PROCHNOW, Albertine was August's second wife, I think his first wife died in childbirth. I just have info after they came to TX., and nothing but a Letter from August in German. What are the PROCHNOW's names, I know they apparently went to WI after they came here.

Jewish Hoffmanns, Hoffmans, Hofmanns. There are lists, 1st published, I believe,in the New York Times of Jewish refugees coming to America after WWII. All of the above spellings are frequently included. In my experience, the idea that the spelling of this name distinguishes Jews from non-Jews is a fallacy common among Germans, both Jews and non-Jews.

Joseph Hoffmann

Joseph Hoffmann, came over to the US in 1856 with his wife. A Hoffmann child was born along the way, perhaps theirs. My great-great-great-great grandfather Franz Hoffman and his family is listed on earlier pages. Looking for anything about him.

Re: Samuel Hoffman NOT First Huffman? Hofmann = German Jewish?

As for the spelling:
German names often change their spelling according to local dialect. My family switched from Hofmann to Hoffmann when they moved to Silesia (because local dialect produced a short "o" in "Hof"). The same is true for those moving to America, people simply tried to match spelling and pronounciation, so maybe some immigration officer wrote "Huff" in order to match what he heard and then others skipped the last "n" because man is spelled with one "n" in English as opposed to German.

As for jewish roots of "Hofmann":
There are too many Hoffmann in this world to think they all have the same genetic or religious origin. I only have documentation of Christian Hof(f)mann ancestors, but my YDNA testing has shown haplogroup E3A which would point towards a jewish heritage. Another interesting fact is that my male line were weavers which was a quite common profession among jews.

Oliver Hoffmann, Vienna, Austria, with roots in Silesia, now Poland, then Prussia/Germany

I probably have no real help for you. I have reached a dead end on my Hoffman line. My Joseph Hoffmann was born May 27, 1836 (his Declaration of Intent to become a US citizen states his birthplace as Weisswasser which is about 50 miles from Gorlitz). He arrived at Port Galveston, Tx. in 1869; married Josepha (Sophie) Bienek (listed on the ship register just below his name); settled in Bastrop County, Tx. That is all we know of his origins. Do you know Emilie's husband's name?

My lineage has been traced back as far as Johan Hoffman of Germany (1371 - 1479), Rector of University of Leipzig (with thanks to my aunt E. Reich who found the compilation by John Claborne Huffman {my thanks to him}).

Interestingly, both my father and my mother were descendants, as they discovered after marriage, a GG-grandfather in common. They turned out to be 2nd cousins once-removed. My family is from NC.
Is anyone here related?
Re: Hoffmann/Hoffman/Huffman: When why change?

You can find most of the original surname spellings in a book called "Rietstaps Armoral General" published in the 1800's. It shows the various Hoffmann families, spellings, heraldry, and what region of Germany they came from. Allot of public libraries will have a copy in their genealogy sections.

I've found that allot of the time the surnames were changed to Huffman if the family emigrated to England first. Hoffman was an original name in many of the German states. But Hoffmann was more prevalent. I've found for the most part that Hoffmann was in fact the Jewish surname. The surnames were often altered for one of two reasons: to sound less German ( in the case of Huffman ), or to tell people your not Jewish. Often these families had converted to Lutheran when the reached the U.S., or wanted to cover the fact over in an anti-Semitic area. Allot of this happened around WW1, and WW2. My father told me that much of the vandalizing of German cemeteries went on during that period. He said he was often given a hard way to go in the community just for being named Hoffman.

In the case of my own family: the name Hoffmann; was changed to Hoffman. I found out it was Hoffmann from various family records, and things my grandmother had. I actually came across a star of David being printed, or stamped next to the name in a census index. My great-grandmother changed it to Hoffman around 1901 when she divorced my great-grandfather. Her family the Kohnlein's had already changed to Koehnlein. They were originally Jewish; but converted to Lutheran. I have checks that she signed both ways; with the second "n" in Hoffmann, and without. I guess she didn't always remember she changed it. But the Hoffman spelling was the only one my grandfather used. My father, aunt, and uncle had no idea it was ever changed until I showed them.
