I am a decendent of Barbara Hume and William Hoge. I would be very interested in your sources linking Barbara back to Robert Bruce. I had originally linked Barbara's father James with the line of George Hume of Wedderburn and Katherine Morrison, this line goes back to Robert Bruce, but all of my research lists only one son George born in 1641. All other attempts to link James to the Wedderburn family further back or even other lines of Humes have been fruitless. I haven't erased the information I've collected on the Barons of Wedderburn, because I'd hate to lose it and then discover a link. I would love any new information or documents to site for this family!

Hi! I have seen parts of that Hoge book, but my ancestry link is one of those that the author did not elaborate on. My 3rd greatgrandfather was Jesse A. Hogue whose father was William,I believe. He was born @1823 in Rutherford, NC, but lived in York Co.,SC. His father William is supposed to be decended from William Sr. and Barbara Hume Hoge through their son, William Jr. and his son George. I am having touble confirming the link from William Jr. to Jesse to my satisfaction, so any info you have would be most appreciated.

I've just started genealogy, and only have my side of the Hoges (from Texas) to Arkansas in 1880. There are several Hoges here in the south, none of which seem to be related to me. My grandfather changed the spelling of Hoge to Hogue sometime in the 1920s. I have been unable to find my line before that. Don't know if this is a help.
Carol Beck

I've not found any Lucy Hoge yet on the 1880 census. I know there are so many variations (Hoge, Hogue, Hodge etc) that it may take years, if ever to find her. I did find Caroline Hoge but it's a rather confusing case. 1880 places this Caroline in Maury Co TN with Augustus Hoge in the place of head of household. Augustus is 31, White, Male. The next in line is Horace Hoge, 56, Black, Male. Next is Tabby Hoge, 56, Mulatto, Female. She is listed as wife. Neither male is technically listed as Head of Household but Augustus is the only one listed as Hoge, Augustus. The others below him are ",Horace and ",Tabby. Also listed as living with them were 7 children (Caroline included) and 6 grandchildren as well as M Blackwood, 70, Black, Female : listed as Mother and Geo. Harper, 36, Black, Male, Laborer.

The Census itself doesn't differentiate between properties/households, it's more or less a guessing game. I'm going by what Ancestry put on their list of household before you click the image itself, and others I've found like it.

As youngsters we were always told Caroline was full Cherokee Indian. I don't know of ANY Hoge that was full Cherokee Indian. My grandmother and her brother had no visible traces that they would have been Mulatto/Black in heritage. If there were other leads on Lucy Caroline in TN I'd look at those and determine this one to be someone else but it's all I seem to have ATM.

I'm also trying now to look at other spellings for Lucy. IE Lucinda or other general misspellings. I know mostly nothing of her though and have no photographs or family history on her. Gotta love genealogy, otherwise it'd drive a person insane. LOL

I have a branch of my Hoge line that lived in Sequatchie Co TN. I am not far enough forward to come with a Lucy. Lucy should be listed in the 1880 census. Looking at TN at that time I think you might consider that the name was listed as Hodge. There are two Lucy's who could be the one you are looking for listed. You might try pursuing one or both of those lines to see if either of them could be the Lucy you seek.

My sister, Lynita (StubbyTate) and I have been searching for relatives of Lucy Caroline Hoge!

The information that I have is Lucy Caroline was born around 1876. I have a scan of the Marriage Record that shows she married James Henry Cooley August 5 1893. James and Lucy had (according to several websites and a letter in her daughter's writing) three children. Coy, who is still a mystery but was likely stillborn. Homer, who all I know was born in 1896, and Lillie Mabel (Mae).

Lillie Mae was my grandmother. She was born July 5 1898. Her mother died from complications arising after childbirth on August 3 1898. To my knowledge she was born and died in Sequatchie County TN. This is really the most we know of her. I'm unable to find an Obituary or concrete census information. I'll be more than happy to fill in any blanks that I can but when it comes to Lucy's parentage I'm afraid I can't be of much help.

George Tyler Hoge Family from Virginia to Colorado 1870s

I am currently researching the family of George Tyler Hoge, the son of James Fulton and Eliza Johnston Hoge of Montgomery County, Virginia. The book, "The Genealogy of Hoge" states he went west to Colorado with his wife Ida (Moore) and they had issue:

Jane Hoge (Eliza Jane, b. Nov. 1879 in Colorado); Avis Hoge (b. Feb. 1881 in Colorado); and Nellie L. Hoge (b. Aug. 1886 in Colorado.) The book didn't mention their eldest daughter, Maud R. Hoge, born in August of 1878, in Boulder County, Colorado. George and Ida met and were married on November 21st 1876 in Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado. 1880 Census lists them living in Balarat, Boulder County, Colorado; 1900 Census has the family living in Jamestown, Boulder, Colorado. In 1910, all the daughters have moved on and George and Ida moved to La Junta, Otero County, Colorado (sim. for 1920 census.) No further evidence of George and Ida has been found, so I don't know their dates of death, but I assume it was in Otero County, Colorado.

As for the daughters, the Hoge book mentions Eliza Jane married a gentlemen named Gilliland; however by the 1910 census, she's into her 2nd marriage with Harold Yentzer in Union County, Oregon. Avis married William M. Clemens and maintained residence in Boulder, Colorado.

I am looking for any records on the remaining two daughters, Maud R. Hoge and Nellie L. Hoge. I cannot find Maud in any records after the 1900 census. Nellie L. Hoge moved to Oregon and was living with her sister Eliza Jane in Union County, Oregon in 1910.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am 9th Generation from William Hoge and Barabara Hume. Our direct line runs from William to his son William II to his son George-Thomas Jefferson-Morgan-Donald-Garrett-Me. My family and I are from Washington County between Wheeling and Pittsburgh. William II's son George also had a cousin named David, who had two sons (William and John)that established the town of Washington PA. There is a memorial there, as well as a historical marker describing their contributions. William and John have no direct decendents.

We can actually trace our ancestry back to the 1400's in Normandy.

I have much more information.
I am descended from Hoges who lived in ND. I've traced them back to Greifenberg in Pommerania in the late 1700's. Is anyone on this list from that area?

There was a bit of information on one family that they'd stayed in PA for a year before moving west to ND.

Isn't there also a large line of Hoge/Hogue family in the south (TX)?

Thank you,
Carol Fowler

Greetings,

I am also descended from this Hoge/Hume line by way of Barbara WHITE, daughter of Dr. Robert WHITE/Margaret HOGE, and Isaac JULIEN, son of Rene Julien/Margaret BULLOCK. I would gladly receive any and all information you have on Barbara HUME's and William HOGE's ancestors. I would be most happy to reciprocate in any way I can. I have the following excerpt from:

SHENANDOAH VALLEY PIONEERS AND THEIR DESCENDANTS
by Cartmell

for your review. Please advise if your information conflicts with what is shown here.

page 411

"William Hogue (Hoge) was of the Hite party, and settled on a branch of the Opequon and called it Hogue Run. He erected his cabin at the fountain head, and continued to live there until his death.

William Hoge settled on his grant about 1735. They were living in Chester County Penne, in 1734. His wife was
Barbara Hume. They had five sons: John William, Alexander, James, and George. (Note: John remained in Pennsylvania and died at Hogestown 9 miles west of Harrisburg.) The other sons and daughters accompanied the father to his Virginia home. William J. afterwards married a quakeress, and removed to what is now Loudoun county, and left many descendants. James settled near Middletown. Alexander became a lawyer, lived near Winchester , James the fourth son, was the father of the first Rev. Moses Hoge, who was direct ancestor of several preachers of that name, D. Hoge, D.D. of Richmond, Va. Rev. John Hoge, who has been mentioned as the first regular pastor of Opecquon Church, was the son of John. George the fifth son was a member of the first courts of Frederick county subsequently he changed his residence to N. Carolina. One of the daughters Margaret married Dr. Robert White a surgeon in the British Navy. A Grandson of Solomon Hoge married Mary Glass, granddaughter of Samuel Glass the emigrant.

William the emigrant, was a Presbyterian, and donated the land for the first "meeting house" at Opeckon, Feb. 19, 1745. The Opecquon Memorial Church stands on the same site."

I double checked the spelling, and what you see if what was written. Dr. Robert White had a daughter named Barbara. It was this Barbara who married Isaac JULIEN (B. 1716, d. 1788 from a rattlesnake bite in Randolph Co. N.C.). and that is how the HOGE's, WHITE's and JULIEN's intertwined...

Thank you,

Judith

Hello Barbara -

I just read your 4 June 2001 post and it's very helpful. I am descended (on mother's side) from Rachel M. Hoge, and have photographs of her grandparents, including Tomsen Lodge Merritt whose name has been preserved in my family in several forms ("Tamgen" didn't sound quite right, I'll admit). I believe her husband was "Byron," though, not "Byrom." Am I wrong? Also, if anyone knows of historical societies in Ohio which might be interested in materials from these Ohio (Cleveland/Loraine) ancestors, I am interested in knowing.

Thanks and best wishes to all you distant relatives.

Patricia McMillen

Could you clarify your source of info on the descendants of William Hoge & Barbara Hume. I'm getting a bit confused. First, I've seen citations for William's death being August 8, 1749 and November 1749. Then, the list of children varies depending on what web site you encounter. I had their son George as being born in 1708, now it appears William Hoge Jr. is given that date. I had son William born 1690 (husband of Ann Rollings). Sigh.
Do you have any publications, court documents, grave marker transcriptions that would give more clarity? I have read through the other Hoge-Hume messages on this board. Need some proof. I'm a descendant of W &B son James Hoge (1706-1795). Willing to exchange info with others. I'm just beginning on the early info.

DNA Project - Hoge, Hoag, Hogg et.al.

I wanted to leave an update to anyone in the Hoge family who has interest in DNA testing. We are encouraging those with traceable direct male lineage (yDNA) to any of these family names to join us.

Our results thus far are exciting and opening new horizons to our family research. We have found several previously unidentified linkages between families and we are looking forward to future discoveries. The most important point is these surnames may be tied together with common ancestors.

We have two internet websites where test results are being assembled, reported, and discussed. These websites work together and provide multiple ways to evaluate and view the complexities of DNA marker test results.

> > Dwight Hogge has been managing a project at Relative Genetics looking for Hogg related lineages. Dwight has posted an excellent update on our progress on the Hogg Family message Board. >> http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hogg/990/mb.ashx
Dwight has his own website (http://hdhdata.org/roots/hogg.html), where he discusses the project direction and results in detail. He has identified a number of genealogically different family lines and we are trying to get specific DNA test results for each of these lines.

> > Deb Waite has been managing the Hogg DNA Project >> http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/hogg/index.html which is affiliated with FTDNA.
Deb has been actively researching the Hogg/Church family where there are documented surname changes in early America. Lineages are posted with DNA test results to help facilitate family matches. This site also provides direct access to testing with FTDNA with group discounted pricing.

DNA testing has been growing rapidly! More individuals are being tested and new marker tests are helping us understand our family history.

All interested parties may contact Dwight or Deb or me with questions via the websites shown above.

Hoag, Hoage, Hodge, Hodges, Hoeg, Hoege, Hog, Hogg, Hoggs, Hooge, Hoge, Hogge, Hoggard, Hoggarth, Hoggatt, Hogsett, Hogman, Hoggman, Hogue, Hague, Ogg, Ogge, Oge

Jonathan W. Redick web site

The web site pertains to descendants of Jonathan W. Redick, born circa 1786 in Pennsylvania, probably Washington County; for several years, lived in Ligonier area, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; alive in 1850 when Jonathan, wife Jane (?Brooks), and children Angeline, Jane and Cummins, were in Hancock County, Virginia, now West Virginia. Several descendants of Jonathan lived in Columbiana County and Wayne County, Ohio; Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; and Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The web has a section on ancestors of Jonathan W. Redick, presumed but not yet proven to be of the John and Rachel (Hoge) Redick clan, via their son John Hoge Redick who married Mary Hoge. The URL is http://www.redick.oilcreekgenealogy.net/index.html
