Sometime between 1920 & 1930 census James dropped the Holbert and went by Butler only. James & Ollie had at least 11 children.

I have a great-grandmother with that name, or at least Ida M. Holbert, and she is buried in Brashear, Texas, I think. I remember that she is very "native American Indian" looking in her pictures, and I remember her, even though she died when I was only 5 years old. We are having trouble following her line, as in the census, she as 1 year old, her mother 20-21, and her father, John Holbert was 71 years old; so, we think that he was actually her grandfather or great-grandfather. Please let me know if you have found any other information.

Hi Krystal
Thank you so much for replying to my post.
I hope the name of this man is familiar to your dad as I am getting absolutely nowhere!
My friend, that I am doing the search for is actually Charles Holbert's daughter, so I would tread very carefully when asking your questions as it may never have been known in the family and she does not want to upset anyone.
He was serving in the US Navy and based at Holy Loch in Scotland when he met her mother. He knew of the pregnancy and asked her to join him in the States. She declined and after the baby was born put her up for adoption and left her home, so even if he tried to find her later on he couldn't have! This baby girl, my best friend, was named Sharlene Cassidy, her mother was a Cassidy, the Sharlene was for her father. Her name now is Alison, she was born in March 1968 and is a lovely person, who just wants to know about her roots. She managed to trace her birth mother, but it was not a very happy reunion, sadly and did not give her any information about her dad. Her mother has now passed on, Alisons 2 daughters are grown up and she wants to have a final try at finding her dad or any relations she may have.
Sorry if I've rambled on a bit.
Take care, God Bless
Lesley

When I was doing my research I found out that on a military record the name Holbert was misspelled Halbert. This caused problems for the man and he was unable to collect his pension. The man was the father (I believe) of Hattie McDaniel whose mother was named Susan Holbert. You might also want to check the name Halbert. They lived for a time in Witcita, Kansas

I've been researching the same family. I have Reuben Holbert m. Catharine Brannon. Reuben apparently died about 1817. Catharine re-married Joseph Wilson 1820. Known children of Reuben and Catharine are John Solomon Holbert m. Anny Hill, William Holbert, and possibly Dolphin Holbert but I believe he may be the son of Reuben's brother. Catharine and Joseph Wilson had Hannibal, David, Dolphin, and Eady.
John Solomon had James Samson, Daniel Monroe, William Moses, Abigail, Rosanna, and Dolphin.
I have other details. email crdlibrary30@yahoo.com.
John

I have other details.

I've been researching the Holbert family in Virginia/West Virginia. The earliest person I have located is Thomas Holbert b. Essex, Va. 1711 m. Lydia Dulin. There was some oral history from an older family member that referenced a Joel Holbert but with no further information available. The source of this reference is now deceased as well as the person who reported it.
There is Joel Holbert listed in early Virginia records, I think about 1745.
I'll be glad to share the informtion I have.
John
email crdlibrary30@yahoo.com

Nate,

With John V. Holbert on the 1860 was Caroline, 47 & children: Elizabeth 20
Othoniel 19
Samuel S 18
Emely 14
Elen 10
John G 8
all born in NY

In 1850, John Holbert is listed as John S. Holbert

The only other Holbert head of household in Chester in 1850 & 1860 was James Holbert. In 1860 he was 72. He was with Sarah, 46 & Theressa, 44, both Holbert. Could be daughters or dau.-in-law. In 1850 he was with Susan, 59, Emily, 29 & Susan, 16. I think all these Holberts were part of the Holbert family in this database at WorldConnect: http://tinyurl.com/65b3cz Possibly the James on the 1860 is the same as James, son of John Holbert, b. 1742.

Pat
According to the 1920 census for Chester Louis A Holbert was b. abt 1887 (he`s age 33). He is head of household & with hime & his wife, Nellie, are their two daughters, Dorris & Ruth. Also living in the home are Louis` parents, John, 66 & Ellie, 63, Holbert. John was born abt. 1854. The index lists him with the middle initial S. but on the actual page it is a G. In 1860 there is a Holbert family in Chester headed by John V., age 47. Among his children is a John G., age 8 (b. abt. 1852). I think the line goes: John V. 1813> John G. 1852> Louis A. 1887. If you need these census records, let me know & I will transcribe them for you.

There is a WWI draft card for Louis Angevine Holbert of Sugar Loaf, Orange Co., NY who was b. Feb. 28, 1886. The card has been cut off when it was scanned so the rest of the info on it is not available.

The Holberts appear to have been in Orange Co. for a long time. One of the former historians for the town of Chester was a Holbert. The town of Chester website gives info. on the Historical Society & other resources. It`s here: http://www.thetownofchester.org/departments/historian/

Pat R.

Re: Holbert Family Name

Hello Joan,

I also, started researching the Holbert's family history; I am the daughter of Aunt Helen (my name is Helen also). If you have information maybe together we could put the family tree together. Here's the information I have gather so far:

Parker (Grandmother the youngest of the family)
Parentage: Jonas and Darkis(Mulatto) Parker(Brazos County Texas)
Siblings: Earnest Parker, Sam Parker,William Parker,Mary Parker.
Cousin John(grandmother Darkis/Darus is her brother)

* Grandmother supposely re-married after the death of Jonas to a Isaac Tolliver(no children), but had a granson living with them Lister Cal and moved to Burleson County;she did have stepchildren: Clarence and Henry

I have not be able thus far to get any information on the her other siblings other than Sam Parker who married a Hattie Allen and had a daughter named Lenora Parker who married a Philander D. Sanders and had two daughters a Marjorie Dean (1928)in Bastrop Co, TX and Shirleen Lavonne(1931) in El Paso, Texas ( have not been able to find contact information of yet on these two sisters)

Holbert (Grandfather) is listed as Mulutto so is both of his parents father's name is Tom Holbert and mother is Charlotte he was born in Burton, Texas (have not followed up on either Tom or Charlotte; gotten this informtion on today).

In the 1910 Fedederal Census shows grandfathers lived in Justice Precinct 4,Burleson, TX with first wife and her family a Willie May who is Uncle Jeffery and Luis' mother; his mother-in-law was Martha Wilson, Papa also had another son Vernel Holbert( not sure about his whereabouts).

Papa was 10 years older than Grandmother when they married in Burleson, TX.

They had a son named Will Anton Holbert born September 1928 in Haslett, Texas whom died July 15, 1936 ( so they had another son younger than your dad).

As you can see I still ways to go to compelete the Holbert/Parker family line; if you have any to comply then we are finished; not sure if papa had any siblings and at time research will show the Holberts as white is the reason is so diffficut to trace the family line.

In Grace,
Helen

His father Was John G Holbert born in 1852 who was married to Ella Stevens born in 1857.

I've hit a small wall that i need to research around but figured i'd throw this out there.
Hi
Thank you for responding, I appreciate any help I can get as I have so little to go on. The only possible I have been able to trace is through the various naval websites a Nathan C Holbert, who fits the timeframe, but who has sadly passed on and I can find nothing on his ethnicity. If you do come across the name I would be real glad to hear from you
Thanks again
Lesley

Lillian June Wixon
Middletown, NY

Lillian J. Holbert Wixon, a lifetime resident of the area, died September 8, 2008.

The daughter of Rennie Holbert and Lena Eldred, she was born June 17, 1931 in Tyler Hill, PA. She married William George Wixon, Sr. on December 20, 1947 in Montgomery.

A family statement reads: "We felt very blessed to have had a Mother like our Mom. She was a woman of great strength and courage who relished every minute as a Mom, grandmother and great grandmother. She always put her children first. She loved to socialize with family and friends. God gave her many crosses to bear over her lifetime which she carried with great dignity and spirit. We will miss her terribly."

Lillian is survived by two sons, Samuel and wife, Darlene of Pine Bush and William and wife, Sheila of Athens, NY; two daughters, Billie Ann Wright of Middletown and Janet Lee Hickey and husband, Ron of Middletown. She will be missed by ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothea Price of Unadilla, NY; two brothers, Richard Holbert and wife, Joan of Wallkill and V. James Holbert and wife, Carol of Montgomery.

Lillian was predeceased by her loving husband, William; her daughter, Donna Jean Adams, and son, Lemuel "Mickey" Wixon.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave., Middletown.

A Funeral Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 12, at the funeral home, with Dan Hulseapple officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Wallkill Cemetery.

Donations in her name may be made to the O.C. Homemaker Service c/o Southwinds, 70 Fulton St., Middletown, NY 10940.

Funeral arrangements under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.; 845-343-6309 or www.applebee-mcphillips.com.

I will miss her deeply. Mom lived with me, my husband and daughter for 12 years. Those she was handicapped in a wheelchair, she would never consider herself handicapped. She loved to be with family and friends. We were recently working on our family tree and photos for next summer's Holbert Family Reunion. So, unfortunately some memories of Mom's I'll never know. I know she is in a better place, but I have a huge void to fill in my life now.
God Bless my Mother she was a wonderful woman!!!
I keep in touch with Jimmy and Kenny, not Karen. Not sure of where she is. Have you been to any of the family reunions since finding you ancestry? We have one every other year in July and this year's is on Sat. July 19, 2008.
You can email me at upset2000@yahoo.com
Re: Looking for Holberts

Hi my name is Krystal Holbert-Reynolds. I am originally from Kansas and I am an African-American. It is possible that Charles is related to me. My grandfathers' name was Orville Holbert and he lived in Kansas as well. He died January 2008 a few weeks before his 93 birthday. I did a little research on Holberts and found that we orginated on a plantation I can't remeber where it was. Anyway all of the slaves were named Holbert so I could not determine whether we were actually related by blood or simply by the fact that we all lived on the same plantation. I also discovered that the lady who played Mammy in "Gone With the Wind" was a Holbert. Again I am not sure whether it is a blood realative or not. I am anxious to see what you find out. My dad is still living so I will ask him about this man.
