You should try the Whitneys. I have with the assistance of some extremely nice whitney relatives made the connection back to 1 generation beyond 1592. Maybrys back to the 1700's. I am tickled pink about this but boy the worthingtons and Holcombs know how to cover their tracks. Can't seem to locate any information beyond Henry Robert on the Holcomb side and none past Willim Jehu on the Worthington side. Are you having any better luck on that score. CJ

Zopher Holcomb in Chagrin Falls

I'm studying tombstones in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery and the original families of Chagrin Falls, OH, and I came across Zopher Holcomb as an eary settler in a history of Chagrin Falls Township, which was around 1840. In the family trees here on rootsweb, I found a match for the family, and so far found a couple tombstones to confirm that this is the one I am looking for. The stone I found is for Mary M. Holcomb, wife of Z. B. Holcomb. She should be the same person as Polly Maria Schofield Holcomb. She was born about 1811, died May 11, 1875. Thomas J Holcomb (T.J.) stone is there too, but the stone is very difficult to read. Reading the stone, he died May 31, 1883. From the family tree , he should be the son of Zopher B. Holcomb and Polly (Mary) Maria Schofield Holcomb, the family from Granby, CT.
Further researching the names, I found postings referring to this family as going to Chagrin Falls, Cuyohaga (sic) County, New York, when in fact they are in Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
I have posted this on findagrave.com, and I know there are some more Holcomb stones that I did not photograph yet, but now I want to try to figure out who they are... again they are difficult to read.
Zopher B. Holcomb is the son of Benajah and Hulda Post Holcomb. My research into Trumbull County Ohio Bushnell families in the past made this name familiar; Hulda Holcomb, the sister of Zopher Holcomb, married Sterling Graves Bushnell and they settled in Ashland Ohio.
(I am related to SG Bushnell, descending from Alexander Bushnell and Chloe Waite of Hartford, Ohio)
Anyone interested in this family I would like to hear from you.
Dave Bowe, Chagrin Falls, OH

My information on Elige Holcomb and wife Pearl McKenzie is that they had three children and are buried in Old Union Baptist Cemetery in Bibb County, Alabama. I found a Geo and Minnie Holcombe listed in 1900 federal census for Bibb county, Alabama with four children one of whom was listed as Elisha Holcombe age 2 born May 1898 and the grave marker for Elige Holcomb listed him as born May 3, 1898. I am assuming this Elisha and Elige are the same person?

Hey there!
Looks like we are cousins of some kind. Send me your email and I will send you a geneology prepared by one of our other cousins back in the '70s detailing the Worthington line. My dad was Jesse and Julie Kate Holcomb's oldest son, William Jehu Holcomb. I am the youngest of his children, Doreen. May I ask your name?

Your message indicates that your Holcomb(e) family has ties to the Howser family in Franklin Co., VA. I'm researching a John William Howser (my wife's G Grandfather) who was born in Franklin Co., VA in 1854; his mother's maiden name was Francis Howser (yes, their surnames are the same). Are you aware of any connection between your Mary Jane Howser and either of the above two Howsers?

We have much information about John William Howser we would be willing to share.

My grandpa is from St Louis-- Marvin Raymond. His mother's name was Christina Grimm, and I think his father's name was George. He had a sister named Geraldine and one named Mae, and several others that he never spoke to again after he left, and I never even knew the names of. Joined the Navy before WWII; his father or grandfather, I think, might have been a Merchant Marine.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Thanks!

The 1900 census shows James HOLCOMB in Lone Pine, Merrick county, Nebraska - the stepson of David Harper and his wife Mary.

James is 46, Mary is 60.

I suspect Mary was first married to ? Holcomb who already had his son James, so that James is Mary's stepson.

Does anyone know anything about this family?

Nicki Harper
ndharper@hotmail.com

Your posting is last year and I do not know if this will reach you or not. But will give it a try. I came across your posting when I was looking for information on of all people Henry Robert Holcomb and his wife Mary Etta Whitney.
My paternal granfather was Jesse Robert Holcomb the son of the above mentioned couple. I have little to go on in my research except for the listing of relatives I recieved from my grandparents. HR and ME had, I was told 5 children: Jesse Robert, Joe, Katie, Jim Henry and Lee.
Jesse Robert married Julia Kate Worthington the daughter of Julia Ann Mabrey and William Jahue Worthington. They produced 12 children I have a list of their names birth dates and dates of death. The only older generation name I have is the father Mary Etta. He was my great great grandfather and his name was Ed Whitney. Oh and I do know the Lee Holcomb married a woman named Thelma(no sir name)
If you have any dates or further information I would be interested in hearing from you.
By the way The story from my side of the family is somewhat different than your. The story was that My Great Great or possibly G.G.Great Grandfather Holcomb was some what of a rogue (Black Sheep Of the family) who ran away from home to see the west. He ended up in Texas married an Indian woman making him a further outcast from his well to do family in Georgia. So little is known in the family because he refused to tell anyone about his family in the south. In fact my own grandfather did not know of family history further back than his own father and uncles. Guess that helps explain what a hard time it is trying to come up with information. Thank you for your time.
g.

Israel Smith Geer + Orlinda Holcomb

In my gr-grandfather's memoirs, he states that his parents are Israel Smith Geer and Orlinda Holcomb. I later found verification of this in the Geer Genealogy. The Geer Genealogy lists Timothy Holcomb and Ann Culver as the parents of Orlinda.

However, the Holcomb Genealogy at the DAR, does NOT list an Orlinda as a daughter of Timothy Holcomb and Ann Culver.

In his memoirs (Knyphausen Geer) also says that two of his gr-grandfathers fought in the Revolution. I have already established that both of them must have been on his maternal side, and thus I am anxious to 'prove' the lineage of Orlinda.

Do any other researchers who claim Israel Smith Geer and Orlinda Holcomb as ancestors have something to document this lineage other than the Geer Genealogy?

Thanks,
Karen
