I am daughter of Clement Holcombe of Asheville, NC., son of Eugene Holcombe, son of William Powell Holcombe b. 1850 in Pickens, SC. William and wife Dorcas Elizabeth Young appear to have died suddenly just after the 1900 Census in NC. I know some of Dorcas's line but don't know where to go for William. All the census records have large numbers of Williams and I don't know any other identifying info to sort him out. Any ideas?

Asheville, North Carolina or thereabouts. Have reached a dead end for this great-grandfather. Wife is Dorcas Elizabeth Young. Both died suddenly after the census in 1900 and left Eugene, the oldest son, to raise Lassie L., Elijah and Edward Elisha. The four of them appear on the 1910 census, but the parents just drop out of sight all together. Any ideas?

I found George and Minnie in the 1900 federal census for Bibb County, Alabama and I beleive it indicated they were married in 1887 and had four children. One of these children was Elisha Holcombe listed as born May 1898. Could this be the same person as Elige Holcomb who was born May 03, 1898 and married to a Pearl McKenzie on June 15, 1918 and both are buried at Old Union Baptist Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama

Someone suggested that Elige Holcomb's father was George Washington Holcombe. The 1900 Federal census for Bibb County, Alabama list a Geo Holcombe and wife Minnie with four children one of them being listed as Elisha Holcombe whick could be the Elige Holcomb that I am looking for as he was listed as 2 years of age and born May 1898 and my Elige Holcomb was born May 03, 1898. Could not find this family in the census in 1910?

Elige Holcomb and his wife are buried in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama. Pearl McKenzie was the daughter of John D. McKenzie and Mary M. Broadhead McKenzie and she was born August 24, 1899. My research shows Elige and Pearl had five children:James Henderson Holcomb born abt 1919 and died November 06, 1944 in St, Clair County, Alabama, Curtis W. Holcomb born October 8, 1920 and died June 01, 1995 in Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama, Louise Holcomb born abt 1923, Alvis Holcomb born abt 1925 and J.D. Holcomb born abt 1927 and was married on December 22, 1951 in St. Clair County, Alabama. Do these fit with your knowledge of them?

I have made several inquiries concerning the grave of Rev. Holcombe. I have found that Sadler Cem. is under the trusteeship of Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church and that some years ago vandals tore up the place, broke headstones and gerenally made a mess. Rev. Holcombe's grave was one of those that the marker was destroyed. I am still trying to locate the right grave plot. I spoke to representatives from Canaan Baptist Church a few weeks ago and they said they would help in the quest.

I live within one mile of Sadler Cemetery and was there today also looking for grave of Hosea Holcombe and could not find it. Have contacted some people who are connected with the people who own the cemetery since it is a privately owned family cemetery about locating the grave. I do know exactly where the historical marker on Hwy 150 is. I am not a member of the Holcombe family that I know of. My interest lies with the ties of Hosea Holcombe and Ruhama Baptist Church. The first meeting of Ruhama Baptist Church was held in the home of my great-great-great-great-grandparents, John and Sarah Jacks. I would like to know anything you have about the church since it is now closed.

I'm a descendant of Hosea Lot Holcombe through his son Alva Jackson Holcomb (mother: Cassandra Jackson).

He was born on 24 Jan 1804 in Cross Keys, SC.
In 1838, he married Mary Tucker Rockett (1809-1881). She was born in NC.

They had 8 children. My line comes from their son, William Carey (1850-1925).

William Carey married Sarah Martha Lou Porter (1859-1928; Mississippi) on 6 January 1881 and they had 5 children. Their 4th child, 3rd son, Richard Roy (1891-1960) is my great-grandfather.

His daughter, Martha Lou (1922-2003) is my grandmother. On 25 May 1946, she married Robert Wright Spake (1923-2000) of Tippecanoe, Indiana / Chicago, IL). They had a son and a daughter. Their daughter is my mother.

I hope this helps with your research.

Sarah

Alva Jackson was one of the Holcombe's to dropp the 'e' from their surname.

He married

This is my family tree! :) I am a descendent of Hosea Holcombe's (1780-1841) son Alva Jackson Holcombe (he later dropped the 'e' from their surname).

Alva Jackson Holcomb married Mary Tucker Rockett abt 1838 (I don't have the exact date) and they had 7 children:

Clematis V. (1839-1872)
Edward B. (1841+1864)
Martha H. (1843-?)
Frances (1845-?)
Mary Louisa (1847-?)
William Carey (1850-1925, b. in Alabama)
Eudocia (b/d 1851)

William Carey Holcomb is my great-great grandfather. His son, Richard Roy is my great grandfather, and his daughter Martha Lou (named for William Carey's wife) was my grandmother.

William Carey married Sarah Martha Lou Porter (1859-1928, born in Mississippi). I don't have much information on her. They had 4 children, all born in Water Valley, Yalobusha, Mississippi:

Estelle (1883-?)
Raymond (1884-1920)
Addie Bester (1885-?) (may have died in WWI)
Richard Roy (1891-1960)
Lorryne (1893-1970)

Their son, Richard Roy (my great-grandfather), lived in Water Valley until 1913 when he moved to Chicago, IL to work for Mr. Wrigley. He died in Hinsdale, Chicago, IL.

I am looking to fill in the holes I have in my tree and if anyone can help with that, I'd really appreciate it. I still have Holcomb relatives in Mississippi and in Illinois.

Hi, I'm interested to know if you've ever found Hosea's grave. My husband is a descendant. I don't know anything more about the church. Here's what I have:
p. 541( from The Holcombes by Helen McPherson) further: "Hosea "Lot" Holcombe moved from S.C., first to N.C. where he preached from 1811-1819, when he moved to Jonesboro, Jefferson Co., Ala. He is recorded as an Elder, licensed to preach by the Cahaba Valley church in Bibb Co., Ala. soon after the church was formed in 1818, preached in Ala. 1819-1841; the first Baptist leader in the state, preaching in many parts of it, organizing nearly all Baptist churches for miles around, established them on sound basis formed associations; presiding at the founding of the Alabama State Baptist Convention.
As pastor, missionary, evangelist and organizer he travelled 5,000 miles in Ala.; wrote 600 letters and many tracts, contraverting anti-missionaried; wrote books of hymns in 1815, lectures on 'Primitive Theology' in 1822, 'Anti-Mission Principles Exposed' in 1836.
Pursuant to a resolution passed in the State Baptist Convention of Ala. in 1834 he engaged until 1840 in writing and publishing a 'History of the Rise and Progress of the Baptist of Alabama' which was published in 1840, now a rare book, found in few libraries, a copy of which compiler has been privileged to examine.
He, wife, 3 minor sons and 3 daughters, 2 of the minors are recorded in the 1830 census of Jefferson Co., Ala.
The following is quoted as typical of comments on his career in Ala.: ' the church increase, (to 50 in 1820 and to 70 churches by 1821) is without a parallel in the United States, and perhaps in the known world in modern times.' ' There were giants in those days, who confronted the enemy of missions.' Some records give him the title D.D. but if it had been conferred it has not been from what institution it came.
The Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Birmingham in recent years adjouned for a pilgrimage of honor in decorating his grave on his former farm at Jonesboro, Jefferson Co., Ala. - near Birmingham. The Ala. Baptist some time previously had the obscure spot of his grave marked by a shaft, suitably inscribed to his memory. His grave remains as a shrine of religious libery to many Baptist, near Bessemer, Ala. Among the churches organized and served by him as pastor is Ruhamah Baptist Church, East Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Ala., founded by him in 1819. A centennial memorial service to him has been conducted in recent years, by its pastor, Dr. W.W. Adams. It yet remains as one of the strongest Baptist churches in Birmingham, Ala."

See also: http://www.hueytown.com/historical/RockCreekBaptistChurch175.... where one can find A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROCK CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH, comp. by Tammy Hope, Sept., 2001. She tells of the glorious revival he held in 1832 and says that in just a few short months over 100 people were baptized. She also says that there is a Historical Marker on Highway 150 in Bessemer. It is inscribed as follows: " Hosea Holcombe 1780-1841. Alabama's first church historian. In 1840 he published his study, HISTORY OF RISE AND PROGRESS OF THE BAPTIST IN ALABAMA. Also, an evangelist and missionary. In organizing five churches in vicinity. President of Alabama Baptist Convention 1833-38. He was delegated to write church history. Lack of cooperation led him to travel over state to get material for book. He died at Jonesboro home in 1841. Buried in Sadler Cemetery 1 mile south." And then it says: " Hosea Holcombe's last words were: "Oh, I have done so little to promote the cause of God. Could it be His will to restore me, I should wish to live longer that I might do more."

media: From the Clearfield Progress newspaper of Clearfield, PA, of Thursday, July 20, 1916, page 4, col. 2 entitled "Daily Lesson in History" and then under "Seventy-Five Years Ago Today" "1841 - Hosea Holcombe, the first Baptist leader in Alabama, died at Jonesboro, Ala. Born in South Carolina, July 20, 1780." Found at the Newspaper Archive.com online at Heritage Quest.

Note that he may be buried on his farm where he died.
Barb

I have gone back and forth and found little on a
Charles Holcombe/Holcomb - b about 1830 d about 1885 (from ages on census and civil war records)

I know he married Amanda (who LDS records show as Amanda De Hereine which I have no other proof for that name) between census 1850 and the 1860 census (1860 census he already has 3 children, oldest being Charles age 6).

In the 1850 census I found Charles (age 20) living in the George McCormick (wife Hannah) household in Richmond, Philadelphia. While this would not mean much I also found another McCormick household (Benjamin McCormick wife Jane) in Philadelphia with a Hester Holcomb (age 22) and Anna M Holcombe (age 17) living there. Not sure of any connection but seems too coincidental.

I am truly lost and would appreciate any help or direction in my search. Thanks in advance for any direction anyone can offer me to find his father or any information at all. I appreciate it.
Chad
Thank you for your reply. I am really trying to find the parents of Charles the father. But I really appreciate your search for me. I actually found the Detterline (not De Herine) line last night. (with some very nice help)
