Re: Dempsey/Dempsay/Holden/Anderson: Ire>NY>Ont ca. 1850-1900

This maybe a few years late BUT:

Actually this sounds as if it refers to two different families. Although Samuel John Dempsey married the daughter of Eliza Holden (Ida Virgin from her first marriage to William Virgin), he was an immigrant from Ireland himself. Perhaps William Dempsey is a sibling or a child? The Samuel John Dempsey I speak of was born in 1855 in Larkhill, Antrim Ulstr NIR, immigrated first to Oswego, NY in 1856 (ostensibly with his parents) then immigrated to Canada in 1874, when he married another Irish immigrant Sarah Morgan Smith. With Sarah he had three children: Hannah Dempsey, Mabel Dempsey, and possibly your step-grandfather William Dempsey. After that he re-married to an Ida Virgin, and had approximately several children, one of which, Claribel Dempsey, is my great-grandmother.

Hope this helps...
Catherine

Dear Melvyn
Thanks so much for your email - I would be delighted if we had the same William Holden in common. Therefore we have to be careful!
In short, I have William born 1871 in Shoreditch, living in Hoxton aged 1 month at the 1871 census; at school in Hackney in 1881; and a Printer in Haggerstone 1891. All these places are very close together and with the shifting of boundaries could loosely be described as Islington. I have lost track of him after that. However I have not found a birth reference for him.
His brother Benjamin also worked as a printer and I suspect that their father, also Benjamin, sailed aged 16 to America, a Painter, in 1854. He is also somewhat of a mystery.
Please email me privately at caro dot holden at btopenworld dot com to discuss!

Hi

I noticed the name William Holden in your exchange and wonder if the William Holden to which you refer is my great grandfather. My great grandfather (believed born in 1871) hails from Islington Middlesex and he and his wife Nelly had eleven children of which my grandmother was one. William Holden is listed on my grandmother’s marriage certificate in 1923 as a painter.
I am new to the family tree tracing and any assistance you may be able to provide would be appreciated.

Many Thanks
Melvyn

Nancy or Ann Who?

In the 1914 obituary for Samuel Wallace McGuire, born Oct. 27, 1826, at West Liberty, Kentucky, it was written: that he was the “son of Samuel McGuire and Jeannette Ferguson, both of whom were born in Bryant’s Station, Kentucky. He was grand-nephew of Robert Burns the Scottish poet”.

Disregarding for the time being, the yet unproven (to my knowledge) place of birth mentioned above for SW, there is still much discussion, that will likely never have a well documented outcome, as to whether the maiden name of his grandmother, Ann or Nancy who married the RW pensioner John McGuire born 1756 in Ireland, was BURNS, HOLDER, HOLDEN or another name that has never made print or the internet.

Given that Burns, the poet, lived from 1759 to 1796 I would entertain theories for the Burns connection. Even a good solid theory for a Burns not related as stated would be a good thing. Another possible outcome, which would do nothing to advance the cause of naming Nancy, is that the relationship could have been on his mother’s side.

Strong arguments for any other maiden names for Ann or Nancy will also be entertained. Anyone mentioning “Eric Passmore White” or “Harlan Brown” need only supply the documentation that accompanies their works to be in the final running for the grand prize.
Re: Holdens of Wheelton, Lancs.

Hi Carole

Yes, I believe I recognise your name too!

Unfortunately, I lost my Holden database when my computer died in 2006. (Moral of the story of course is to back up regularly!) Although I do have most of it on paper, I haven't had the heart to do it all over again.

I can't identify your John without a bit more info I'm afraid (if at all!) and I don't have any Judiths married to Williams.

Judith wasn't a common name in the Holden family EXCEPT in the old Holden line from Royton, where it was extremely common, one in every generation of every family for about 300 years. I presume your Judith is a married-in though and not a Holden at birth.

I have managed a few mini trees for Wheelton Holdens but it is an impossible task really as there are so many parallel families with common first names, and they seem to use two parish churches as the whim takes them, plus numerous chapels of ease. I would really like some Monumental Inscriptions as these often help sort out families, but so far I haven't found any on the internet and I am too far from Wheelton to make the journey in the foreseeable future.

Marjorie

His father, also called Jabez, was born (1831) in and stayed in Darwen as above.
Bunker Hill was I believe mid 1770s?

There may or may not have been a connection between them. HOLDEN is a not uncommon name and Jabez was an old biblical name. There appear to have been HOLDENs in Yorkshire as well.

Good Luck

Vicki, not sure if I have corresponded with you. Would love to exchange info. There are several other Holden researchers who might be of help including the original poster of this strand, my cousin George. Richard Andrew Jackson Holden is my ggg uncle. I believe he is the father of your James Garfield Holden. Would love to know more about James Garfield.

Sheryl

Aunt Lura always spoke about her son George Jr. The last time I saw Aunt Lura and her family was in 1969. My parents, G. Samuel Remick and Virginia Ruby (Bonicave) and I were moving to southern California. We made a point to stop in Owensboro, KY to see her. My father died in 2001 at 82 and my mother died in 2000 at 75.

Sarah Jane Holden Garrison 04/03/1857 - 02/25/1948

Sarah Jane GARRISON was born April 3, 1857 at Lorraine, Ill, the daughter of Daniel and Angeline HOLDEN. On January 14, 1875 she was united in marriage to Rev. James A. Garrison, at Quincy, Ill. Six children were born to them, three of whom preceded their mother in death, Mary Alice and Olive Josephine in infancy and Daniel Albert who died at the age of fifteen years at Jacksonville, Fla. While serving with the U.S. Army in the Spanish American War. The surviving children are Delphia, wife of Richard MILLER of Pound, Wis., Charles of Springfield, Ill. And Monroe Elmer of Wichita, Kans. She is also survived by a half-sister Mrs. Lillie OLLER of Mendon, Ill., and Ed Holden of Lorraine, Ill., eleven grand-children and twenty-four great-grand children and one great-great-grand child and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Garrison preceded her in death in May 1926. She grew up in the county where she was born and soon after her marriage moved to Walshville and her home was in that community for many years. In August 1942 she went to make her home with her daughter at Pound, Wis. She passed away on February 25, 1948 at 7:30 a.m. at the home of her daughter, age ninety years, ten months and twenty two days. In early life she was united with the Methodist Church and she remained a faithful member to her death. Her Christian life has been an influence in all the lives of her many descendants and friends. She remained very active for one of her age and she kept a lively interest in all her family, and will be sadly missed by all. Interment in Kirkland cemetery.

(Sarah Jane Holden Garrison moved from Adams County Illinois to Montgomery County Illinois. Her parents had come to Illinois from Butler County Ohio.)

Hi Marjorie,
I actually live in Derbyshire now and cannot drive but was fortunate enough to be driven to Wheelton/Brinscall by my brother's girlfriend. Because there are so many Holdens in the area it has taken me years to find a father for James Holden. I now do really think that John Holden is his father due to the similarity of the names in the family, of course I could be wrong. Trying to track them down on other censuses, as John and Sarah only seem to appear on the 1841, has proved so far to be a fruitless task. Those elusive Holdens. Kind regards Carole

Have you any further information as it would be gratefully received. I have also posted a photo of a Holden grave William and Judith who are in my family tree. I am very confused and am still trying to link them together. Kind regards. Carole

Hello Sheryl, yes I have been in touch with George. A very nice man, George and I both think that maybe Richard A J Holden and his wife Amelia Ellen Holden are buried close to the Cache area. I did find a WWI registeration Card on James Garfield Holden stating he was born in Minco Oklahoma on Jan 2, 1888, but living in "Meers Oklahoma" at the time of registration on June 5,1917 in precinct McMaster, Comanche co. Oklahoma. I am still not sure how many children RAJ & Amelia Holden had both in Texas and Oklahoma.

If you would please Email me at squaredancing_lady@msn.com we can talk more. Simeon was born in 1875 had 5 sons and one daughter. Simeon married Fanny Cecil Riley. I have the info of Simeon's parents from a book called 'The Holden Genealogy' it was given by Simeon himself to the author. Of course that doesn't mean it's 100% correct. I've been looking for Simeon's parents a long time and this is the closest I've come to thinking I've got the right parents so if any one has any info whether to confirm or not I would be very happy to get it.

My mom Florine is Bennie's sister. I met my Uncle Bennie once or twice when I was really little.

My Grandfather, your Great Grandfather was Joseph Washington Holden. Born in maybe 1891. He died May 23 1958 in Lauderdale, Alabama. He was 67 y.o. His father was JT Holden and his mother was Nora Holden.

Your Great Grandmother was Thelma Baker. I know she was born May 15, 1910. She died in June of 1992, in Placer County California. Her mother was Nora Baker, she passed in April 1980 in Willits Calif. Thelma's father was Claude Baker.Nora had been married several times. I just found some additional information on Nora. Her maiden name is Carr. Thelma and Joseph divorced I believe and she remarried Ruth Walker. Ruth was the only one I knew, as Joseph died before I was born.

Thelma and Joseph had Bennie, Faye, Lucille and Florine Holden. Thelma and Ruth had Dorothy, Claude and Jerry Walker.

George Jr was my uncle he had no children, he pass away young maybe 58 y/o , my father was Ernest Jenning he passed in 91 at the age of 61, then sonny was the youngest he passed in 92 at a young age too. The oldest daughter was Edith who is still alive but not doing well, then aunt Dot she pass away in 90, then Helen just passed about a month ago. The only Holdens left from my grandfather on down would be (me) George I have 3 sons, 2 daughters, brother James who has 1 daughter, and my brother Steve who has a son.
My grandmother was very proud of my 3 youngest childen because they were the 1st Holden triplets in the family (20 y/o now) but we have another set of triplets in the family now in ky, I think they are 4 or 5
