We are planning a trip to Edinburgh in February and I remember someone telling us that the Holdgate name came originally from England. I googled Holdgate and came across your message on ancestry. I married a Holdgate and his parents are from Canada. I remember his mother saying she had some scottish and english backgrounds in the family. I haven't thought about tracing our family name until right this minute...but was wondering where is the best place to start to find out about the Holdgate ancestry?

Oddly enough my aunt on my side of the family traced my grandfathers name all he way back to Queen Elizabeth I (I think), William Cecil. So I know there's an english background for myself somewhere out there.

Thank you for any help you can provide. I'm not really sure where this is gonna lead but it may just be fun!

I am also researching the Holgates, in Colne Lancs and Hunslet Yorkshire, have managed to get back to 1580 with a James Holgate married Isabell Acringley, am happy to swap information, don't know if we are the same Holgate tree,

Only pretty recently did I realise I had Holgate ancestors.
My paternal great grandmother was Anne Holgate, who married William Turner, my father's grandfather. I had never heard of her until I started studying my family history.
I live in Lancashire, England, not too far from Sawley where Matthew Holgate came from. The Quaker Meeting House there is still active: one day I will make the long journey (ha ha: about 10 miles) to see it. I have been in contact with the custodian and she would really be interested in the Matthew Holgate story.
Amazingly, about 10 years ago I was several times in Pennsylvania, but in Lancaster County where I have Amish friends. And I didn't know then about Matthew Holgate.

I am looking for early Holdgates (or any of its variants) who came from King's Lynn, Norfolk, England.

I have found family ancestors under all of the above names. As far as I can determine, my line of Holdgates came from King's Lynn, Norfolk - prior to there, I have no idea.

If anyone is researching these names in Norfolk, I'd like to learn what information you have found and I, of course, will share what I have found.

I look forward to hearing back from anyone researching this same family, I have found some Holgates in Norwich but apart from them, the only other Norfolk Hol(d)gates have come from King's Lynn (originally - they did start moving around the county and to other counties later on).

Looking for a Muriel Holgate - born 1893 daughter of Samuel Verity Holgate and Annie Maria Jagger. Had brothers Arnold Verity born 1883 Maurice James born 1884 Ernest William born 1889. All in Nottingham in 1901 census. Believe Muriel married a R Haslehurst overseas - possibly India, but nothing else known about her.

My grandmother was Carrie Ellen Holgate, daughter of Levering Holgate/Kate Murphy. Levering was the son of John Holgate/Myra Gilbert. John was the son of Cornelius Holgate/ Mary Levering.

Lia, I would love to share information with you. My grandmother was Carrie Holgate, Marian's sister, and I have done a lot of research on that line. Carrie and Layfayette David Seeman had one child, my father, Levering Lafayette Seeman. So he was a cousin to Marguerite and Alice. Actually, I went out to California with my parents and sister when I was about 10 and visited with them.

Some time ago someone in my family acquired a largish family bible. There are a couple of inscriptions in it they are:- John son of Betty Taylor Holgate of Bradford. Baptized December 2nd 1818. Apparently bought by the mother to commemorate the baptism of her son.

A second inscription: - Sarah Mann her book Nov 15th 1842

No indication if Holgate and Mann are part of the same family.
