There is a Holly/Holley/Hawley surname project at Family Tree DNA and an associated Yahoo Group. Lots of info. is posted on the Yahoo Group and anyone is welcome. If you actually have a direct male with a Holley surname, we'd love to have you in the DNA project. Check out http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1 to view the surname project. The coordinator, Holly Kilpatrick, can also send you an invitation to the Yahoo group.

We have found many with all 3 name spellings who are likely descendants of John Holly of Stamford, CT.

Holley Izard

Kenny, my sister was married to a Holley in Illinios and now my neice is looking for information on her family and don't know anything about her dad's family. Was wondering which Holley's you were related to in Illinois. As far as she knows her dad was born in Indiana but not known where. She was under the impression that some where in the line they were related to people that founded Evansville, Indiana. That could be possible Robert Morgan Evans. If you could help that would be awesome. You could email me at cree_25@hotmail.com

Hope some of my research helps you-all. Maybe you can help me fill in some blanks, too.

I have quite a few Holley's and Mitchells buried in the "very, very old" Greenwood Cemetery, Birmingham, Oakland Co. MI.

Robert John Mitchell b. 1819-d. 1890 and Emmeline Holley b. 1820 - d. 1866.

This couple had Franklin Mitchell b. 1852; George Mitchell b. 1854 MI; and John J. Mitchell 1860-1862 MI.

R.J. Mitchell and Emmeline were in Bloomfield, Oakland Co. MI (Birmingham) in 1860. Emmeline's mother Sarah Nye Holley lived with this family in 1860.

Emmeline Holley had sisters Caroline, Adeline, and Mary J. There was also Franklin and George. I don't recall at this time if they were children of 1st or 2nd wife.

Adeline Holley 1825-1842
Mary J. Holley 1838-1871
Caroline Holley 1822-1909 married Joseph Utter in a double wedding ceremony with his sister Mary Ann and my great-great grandfather Hezekiah Rowley. The Greenwood Cemetery exists primarily because Mary Ann Utter's mother and sister were brutally murdered. Ziba Swan established the cemetery for them. They are on the "ghost tour."

The following are buried at Greenwood.
Sarah Nye Holly 1797-1870 (mother of Caroline, Joseph’s wife)
Mary J. Holley 1838-1871 (Caroline’s sister)
Joseph Utter 1809-1877 (son of John, sister of Mary Ann, husband of Caroline)
Caroline H. Holley 1822-1909 (wife of Joseph Utter)
George H. Utter 1845-1868 (s/o Joseph & Caroline)
Mary E. Utter 1857-1947 (d/o Joseph & Caroline
Emaline H. Mitchell 1820-1866 (possibly Caroline’s sister)
John H. Utter 1842-1864 (s/o Joseph & Caroline)
William H. Utter 1840-1863 (s/o Joseph & Caroline)
Adeline Holley 1825-1842 (sister of Caroline)
Baby Mitchell
John J. Mitchell 1860-1862

That would be great! I had a chance to go to Westview Cemetery in Augusta, GA where John and Sarah Holley were buried but they didn't have a headstone and had trouble locating an empty spot where they actually might be buried. May auntie thinks someone was buried over them! I don't have any information other that what I learned in the office at Westview Cemetery. I know they had a son named John (Jr)?, Seth, Mattie and Minnie. According to the census there should she a couple more children based on how many she had. Any help is greatly appreicated!
RuthKossHanner

I am searching the line of Holleys in Georgia who are mostly from the Dooley County area. My g-g-gfth was a William or Will E Holley who was married to an Emmie. From what I have been told he had about 24 children!!! I am sure they are not all from his wife and I believe she died young. I did find them in the 1920 census. I will be glad to share any info I have so far.

Searching for information on John Green HOLLEY who m Penelope WATSON. Scattered online information lists him b Laurens Co., GA and d1828 Geneva Co., AL.

The reason I am looking for him is in tracking 3 siblings that could be his children. A public tree atrributes this family as being the parents and I have not researched this line.

The siblings that I have confirmed are below and there are probably more:

1) John Christopher "Jack" HOLLEY: b4-18-1819 Jasper, Walker Co., AL d4-20-1905 Cottonwood, Callahan Co., TX. Married to Margaret COTNEY.

2) Sarah Martha HOLLEY: b 1820-1830 AL d1870-1880 prob AL. Married to William B. CAIN who d prob Lee Co., RX, then after his death to William BLANTON TX, divorced and went back to Walker Co., AL and unknown if remarried.

3) Mary Jane HOLLEY: b6-10-1833 Walker Co., AL d Mar 1921 Killeen, Bell Co., TX. Married to William Franklin ECHOLS.

I am hoping that someone who is familiar with this line can share what they have learned on him. I have been looking for parents of these 3 for many years with no success. This is some new information that I am excited about following up on.

Holley is not just an English name, or even a Welsh name. It can also be Irish, or in my case, Pennsylvania Dutch...my ancestor Johannes Holley came from Switzerland in the 18th century. The spelling wavered between Holley & Holly frequently, & sometimes was even spelled Hawley. So, since there are at least 4 ethnic origins to the name, the chances of everyone with a Holley in their family being related to Buddy Holly are pretty slim.

If any of you carry the direct male line or have a brother, uncle or someone who is a direct male Holley, you might want to participate in the Holly/Holley/Hawley DNA study on Family Tree DNA.com. Many of us are descended from John Holly, a founder of Stamford, CT, who was born in England. We also have a Yahoo research group where we've shared a lot about our genealogies.

One of our members (already shown to be related to most of us through shallower DNA testing) did the Deep Clade testing that is supposed to show the early origins of the name and it showed Celtic origins.

Holley

Edwin Kenneth Holley?

My father was Edwin K Holley b. 1934 in Queens New York and d.2006 in California. He was a Cpl in the Korean War. LDS Family search shows his parents as Arthur Holley and Lillian Baird of Queens NY. Ancestry has the record of his marriage to a Blanche F. Hartman / Blanche Hunt in CA in 1969 as well as his marriage to my mother Joanne in Las Vegas in 1972. Everything else we have is annecdotal and unproven. Other children he may have had, who his brothers were and what wars they died in, and so on. The only brothers he gave by name were Edward and Keith. He mentioned a son/nephew named Johnny to neighbors that he put into military school. On my birth certificate he listed his occupation as merchant marine, but that wasn't so. He was fond of saying everyone was dead. Parents, brothers (in the war), wives (one from a car crash), all other four kids (unnamed daughter, from car crash). Naturally I have a healthy scepticism of almost everything attributed to him. He wasn't in our lives after I was four. May have spent time in prison. Who knows? If you can shed any light on this man and who we are/might be related to, my brother and I would appreciate it. Preferably by email Lunacastre@gmail.com Thank you.

I am looking for the family of Stella Holley, b. 1874, Michigan. Her father was Benjamin Holley, 1846-1918 and her mother was Mary J. Hair, 1852-1885. She had two sisters, Maretta, 1871-1960 and Nellie, 1876-1949. Stella appears in the 1880 census of Maple Grove, Barry, Michigan with her family, but then evidently was married or moved away by 1900. I have no record of her married name, but would love to make contact with her family if possible.

I have some information on Thomas Edgar Holley - his brother was my husband's grandfather. Lula Holley was actually his sister. His mother's name was Caroline Holley, but I do not know his father's name. Information I have states that Caroline was born April 1869 (although 1870 census shows her born about 1863), and died 26 Dec 1952. Her children were Lula, Betty Ann, Thomas Edgar, Johnnie, Charlie Earnest, Ida, Nannie Mae, and Allie. Thomas Edgar Holley married Lucy Shively, daughter of Edd and Laura Crawford Shively, on 14 Jan 1915. Lucy's sister, Joyce Shively, married Tom's brother, Charlie Holley. Caroline Holley was the daughter of Peyton and Sarah Holley. I do have more information if you have any interest. Hope this helps!

The last she knew, you were in Pennsylvania, the best she knew anyway. I haven't seen or talked to dad since grandma passed. I am now living in Colorado, married, and have two daughters. As far as I know, dad is still married to Myra and living in Mt. Juliet. I would very much like to talk with you. If anyone else reads this and can help me get in contact with Kenny, please help.
