A Horrible Suicide
Mrs. Malinda Hollister, an inmate of the asylum, commited suicide Wednesday morning by hanging herself to the window grating in the room in which she was confined, using her own stockings as a means of effecting strangulation and death. Mrs. Hollister has been a patient in the institution for some time the peculiar nature of her malady being what is known as melancholia, or utter depression of spirit. She was brought here from Lamar County, but at no time before Wednesday had she been known to make an attempt upon her life. Tuesday night she was confined with a number of other patients in the room in which it has been the custom to keep those who were not dangerously insane, or so afflicted as to do themselves or others bodily harm. On this occasion Mrs. Hollister did not seem to be suffering from any unusual depression of mind and the attendant was given no grounds to surmise the terrible act that was soon to be committed. She left the patients to themselves and retired for the night. Upon making her accustomed rounds Wednesday morning she was horrified upon entering the room where Mrs. Hillister was confined to see that lady dangling from the window grating with one foot barely touching the floor and one hand resting upon the window sill. The breath of life had only left her a few moments before she was discovered as the warmth of her body plainly indicated. The attendant quickly notified Dr. Preston, who sent word to Justice T. L. Frank to come over and h old the inquest. That formality was gone through Wednesday morning about 10 o'clock, the verdict being that the patient had come to her death by strangulation effected as above stated. The body was interred in the asylum cemetery immediately after the inquest was held.
It is presumed that the victim tied her own stocking about her neck after fastening one to the other, then securing the other end to the window grating, stepped off the sill and died a horrible death by strangulation. The other inmates of the room were asked by Mrs. Knight why they permitted Mrs. Hollister to hang herself. One replied that "she wanted to die so bad and they didn't want to keep her from it."
