Will of Nicholas Holstein, Oct 9, 1769, Granville Co, NC

Abstracts of The Wills and Estate Records of Granville County, NC 1746-1808

Oct 9, 1769 Proved August 1774
Nicholas Holstein wills to his son JACOB 280 acres, together with the plantation whereon I now live, a gun and a sword; to my son John, all remainder of my land in Granville Co, NC; to daughter CATHERINE, a cow and a calf; the remainder of my estate divided to my daughters: CATHERINE, MARY, SUSANNAH, BARBARA, ELIZABETH HOLSTEIN.

Executers: William Oglivie, Hentry Wideman.
Witnesses: Robert Harris, Lavender Harris

The will does not list a wife, and I have a copy of the actual will and read it through, BUT, the record of the sale of the estate of Nicholas Holston in 1774 lists as buyers, among many names, "WIDOW HOLSTEIN" meaning there was a wife. No first name. Also "MARY HOLSTEIN" is listed as a buyer.

The Nov 1778 court settlement of the estate of Nicholas Holstein lists Henry Stator as guardian of Elizabeth Holstein (Henry married daughter Catherine who got the cow and the calf) so the "widow Holstein" must have died between 1774 and 1778.

If anyone has further information on this family please contact me, including a marriage record for Nicholas Holstein and/or his wife's name, and when Nicholas Holstein was born and where. Hold old was he when he died?

I already have these marriages:

Holston, Elizabeth Jacob Morris 15 Feb 1800
Granville Co

Holstein, Catherine Henry Straiter 31 May 1773
Granville Co

Holstein, Jacob Catherine Strador 19 Feb 1780
Granville Co

Thank you,
Gina Foster
Nicholas and Jacob Holstein of Granville County, North Carolina

I am researching the family of Jacob Holstein, who married Catherine Strador/Strator on Feb 19, 1780 in Granville County, North Carolina. Jacob's will is dated October 10, 1794 and proved Nov 1794 in Granville. Jacob apparently died after only 14 years of marriages, so all of his children were underage. His will names his wife Catherine and oldest son John, and also names "well beloved sons" and daughters, but not by name. I am looking for information on how the land and goods were divided once the children became of age, and if they were then named. Jacob was willed 280 acres of land and the plantation by his father Nicholas Holstein in his will of 1769, and then in Jacob's will he states he "bequeaths to Catherine my dearly beloved wife my land till my oldest son becomes of age. Then to be equally divided amongst my well beloved sons and to my oldest son John my shot gun...."

Any help in this regard is appreciated. I am trying to connect this Jacob Holstein to my direct ancestor Nicholas Holstein/Holston who was born to settlers of North Carolina per a family biography. My Nicholas was married to Rebecca Slight on June 16, 1812 in Jessamine County, KY but lived in Floyd County, Indiana with his family. Nicholas could be a son of this Jacob Holstein, being named for Jacob's father Nicholas. I just need to find the names of the children of Jacob and Catherine to prove it.

Any help in this regard is appreciated.

Gina Foster
GGG Granddaughter of Nicholas Holston/Holstein who married in 1812

I am trying to trace the family of Celia Holstein b 1797 who married Elkanah Sawyer. Celia was my grandmother's ggggrand mother. I have seen two versions of her family. One has Celia whose father was Moses whose father was William whose father was Stephen whose father was Henry. This version has dates that appear correct. The other version has Stephen as Stephen Jr whose fater was Stephen Sr. whose father was Henry. The dates are kind of vague in this version. So which is correct? I would also like info on the mothers in this line if possible.

King Holstein Holmes

There has been a bit of speculation on the parentage of King Holstein Holmes. Speculation has stated that he was the son of an unknown Holstein and Thomas Holmes. I am not positive if I have the right King H. Holmes; but, if the one referred to as King Holstein Holmes died in Jefferson County Mississippi around 1834 leaving as his heirs William G. Holmes, Elizabeth Holmes Dunbar, Heirs of Simpson H. Holmes, and Heirs of Mary Holmes Martin, I recently was doing
some research and gathered the will of Joshua Howard of Adams County. I am attaching it. According to the will and further research this King H. Holmes is the son of an unknown Howard and Simpson Holmes, Jr. I hope this may clear up some information for many of you out there.

Looking for information on Zacharia/Zack (1850-1908) and Matilda Douglas (1852-1945) Holstein of Wayne County IL. They had four children; Frank (1876-1961), Joseph Fleming (1880-1945), Anna McCain, and Gertrude Linn. I think Zacks father could be John (1817- ) and Martha HOLSTON but that is only guessing (although fairly good evidence) off the census. John Holston was born in VA and Zack was born in Kentucky were they lived then according to census. Any help/leads would be wonderful.

I have recently purchased a photo of Roger Hollstein from an antique shop in Marietta, Ohio. The photo is of a young baby taken last 1800's or early 1900's. The photo is on a cardboard post card and the name is written on the back. The baby is sitting in an ornate wicker chair and has on a long light (probably white) dress with long sleeves. The baby looks to be about 6 months old and is bald.

I enjoy purchasing photos in antique shops that have a name in the hopes of getting them in the hands of a descendant. The only cost is the cost of the photo and the cost of postage.

Each son married and each had children and grandchildren and they used the same name over. They were proud of Grandfather Henry a.1723 and uncle Stephen 1723. John, William and Peter was a very common name they used. The middle name L. usually
stood for Looney after their mother and grandmother Jane Looney. It is very hard to keep the families separated. My line is Peter 1795 and Elizabeth McClure Holstein. Helen

Looking for Robert Holstein

I was born in Jacksonville, FL 12/11/1965 and was placed for adoption at that time. Robert's middle name may be Todd. He was married at the time to a woman named Mary Swindle from Florida. He also has another child, Robert (Bob), who was born 8/64. His last known location was TX selling insurance.

I was told by my birth grandparents that he remarried a school teacher who had 3 children of her own by a prior marriage.

I am trying to get medical history and any genealogy possible. If you have any information, please let me know.

Thank you, Julia King

Loking for relatives of Livia Holstein

My mother was Livia Holstein, born in Hungary (Budapest) in 1920. Her father was Julius Holstein, died in early 30's. Her grandfather (Wilhelm ?) was born in Germany and had 8 brothers and sisters. No relatives in Hungary or about. According to my mother's information there is a relative of ours in New York (Andrew or William). Are we the only Holsteins with my daughter Kathrine in the middle of Europe (Budapest, Hungary)?
