Yes, ARchibald was b. 1823 in Virginia and Abigail, his wife was b. 1836 in McDonough, Illinois. I am excited to hear of the family Bible and It would be more than a sad thing to see it at the dump. I said in my other email, I will pay for it to be delivered, UPS is a good way to deliver things. Can I send my address in a more private email? Either I can write to your email or you can write to mine. Which ever is good.
Please tell me that you still have the Bible that is from my Holstine family. My fathers father was Holstine and he was b. in Hinton W. Virginia. My fathers father is from W Virginia and I also just heard from some other Holstines in Virginia and W Virginia. This is too exciting. To not only hear about dead relatives but to hear from/about live ones too. Kathy

I am in possession of a family bible that belonged to Mary Theodra Holstine who married Lemuel B. Williams. This marriage was witnessed by Abigail and Archibald Holstine and took place in August of 1873 in McDonald? Co. Illinois.
I bought this at an estate sale. I just couldn't see it going in the dumper which I feared was where it would have ended up.
If anyone can connect up here I'd be happy to touch bases.
Doug Chadduck

Hi cuz,
The Holstine Family Ancestry was written in 1996, by hand, by Mary Ruth Baker Holstine. I believe there may be a copy in Salt Lake City. It contains personal recollections and unsourced information, beginning with Matts Holston of Delaware/Pennsylvania in the late 1600's. I have been trying to put together an all-name index, but it's been slow going. Here's a tidbit for you:
"William H. Holstine, born 1813 in Virginia, now West Virginia, died in the 1870's and his grave is now lost. Martha Burnside/Byrnside Holstine, born June 10, 1818 in Monroe County, Virginia, married Dec 10, 1835, died in 1901 in Ava, Missouri, and is buried in the Arno Cemetery near there. They came to Cedar Co., MO as did Henry and a sister along with their families and one of Hugh's grandchildren, the daughter of Lucinda and Henderson Burnside (a daughter to Lucinda, I believe) Her name was Martha L. Burnside, about 1858.
"Lucinda, Henderson and the rest of the family (except one son Andrew J. who probably remained with his grandfather Hugh) died of a disease called the Bloody Flux [dysentery]. Henry and William moved on from Cedar Co. with William settling in Douglas Co. around Ava, MO. The Belcher family remained in Cedar Co. and I believe that Martha L., daughter of Lucinda and Henderson Burnside, returned there."

The surname Rambo sounds familiar. Let me do a bit of reading and get back to you. As I said, there's no index yet!

I'm also sending this to your personal mail.

Peggy Holstine at yahoo all lowercase

Peggy,
Since I posted that message on the board I have done much research on the Holstines and allied families. I would like to know where William H. Holstine and his wife Martha Byrnside Holstine are buried, if that knowledge is available.
Also, I'd like more information about this Holstine family book that you have. When was it published and are there any copies still available? How far back does it go? Does the book include any information on the Rambos (a family that intermarried with the Holstines many generations ago)?
You can email me at furyious@gmail.com

Mary was around 5 in 1910 census but if her dad died 1902, she had to be a different age in 1910, if even alive. She did die in West Virginia and at a young age, very young.
kity2cat K
thanks for any research

I do believe they are Hugh Nicholas Holstine and his wifes name was julia. She has a brother names Jim (James) and a sister named Cora. Kitty was also from Oklahoma.
I am researching my grandfather's family and have become stumped with his parents. My grandfather was born in 1917 in Lake Orion, MI to Roy Raymond Beck (b.1889) and Eunice Ester Holstine (b.1899). Eunice died about 1923 in a car accident with one of her young sons, Roy died about 1929 for unknown reasons. After this, my grandfather and his younger sister were fostered out. Any information would be very helpful.

Kay:

Corrections to my last response to you:
Ray's children were Edward, Elmer and Audrey (I believe Audrey is your birth mother and Aunt Susie may have adopted you). I believe Audrey's first (?) husband's name was Rufus Moore and he may have drown in Lake Michigan in the 1950's;
Howard's daughters were Shirley Jane, Carol Sue and Bonnie;
Nola's sons were Alex Parsons and David Parsons, Their father was Alex (they pronounced it "A'lack") Parsons ;
"Mang" may have only had one daughter, Dolly Faye;

Other than that the below is OK. Granda Holstine's date of death was 9/30/52, according to her death certificate on file at:

http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=1449255&Typ...

Good luck and good health!

Kay: My grandmother was Orpha Moore. I believe you are referring to Susie Meadows (husband was Sam), who is my great aunt and if I am guessing correctly, "Mang" was your grandmother and Dolly Faye Walker was your birth mother. Uncle Ray (he had a couple of wives or more) had two sons, Edward (deceased) and Donald and two daughters. Mang (I believe her husband was "Spot"(not sure what his real name was) Spradling) had two daughters, Dolly Faye and Audrey. Howard (wife Juanita) had three daughter, Shirley Jane, Bonnie Sue and ? (can't remenber). I never met Charlie, he was killed in an accident at work before my time. Emory (wife Tinny) had several children, Mary Jane, Charles and Edward (Charlie died in a house fire several years ago). Of course Susie had three sons which you know, Lovell, Billy and Ricky. Joe had three children, Donald, Patricia and Sandy. Nola has two sons, Alex (Tiny) Parsons (owner of Turnpike Ford and Chevrolets) and ? (can't rember the other sons name, but I believe he is a preacher). Orpha (husband Ed Moore) had a large family, my mother Anna (who had 12 kids with husband Denny. Both Anna and Denny are deceased and my sister Ruth has passed as well). Orpha's sons were Thomas, Owal, Jack, Oley Lee, Arley, Bob and twins Melvin and Marvin. Jack, Arley, Bob and Marvin are still living.

Grandma Holstine went by the name Western Holstine. She died when I was small and I remember being at Nola's home (I was about 3 or 4) when all the family gathered at her death bed. Granda Moore only referred to her dad as "Poppy" and he is buried at Brounland Cemetery but I could not locate his grave (may be unmarked). Grandma Moore and I used to go there when I was a young man. Granda Holstine is buried at Graceland cemetery in Ruth. I knew Ray and Howard a little bit bit, I spent more time around Joe and Emory's families. I have lost touch with most of my grandmother's relatives, and I am guessing that her siblings are all deceased. My mom truly loved Grandma Holstine and told us a number of stories about her. Granda Holstine was "sort of ahead of her time", using herbs as medicine and helping tend to sick neighbors and children. Grandma Holstine was born on 11/28/1877 and died in 1953, her mother was Jane McLasky Davis and her father was Tom Davis. That's about all I know. Thanks for the information about Grandma Holstine's real name of anna norwestern, that is good information. I cannot find any reference to William Holstine in West Virginia records, but I am still searching. Take care, hope you get this as your posting was back in 2003. Your friend and relative.

Tiffany: What is your husband's first name and I'll figure it out. Perhap's your husband's grandfather or grandmother was my grandmother's (her name was Orpha) sister or brother? ...Or perhaps, I have chosen a bad day to quit Prozac... I gave Kay somewhat a myopic account of my recollections of my great grandmothers' family, as I recalled them during my early travels guided by Samual Adams, Jack Daniels and our good friend, Jim Beam. Such are the musings of an irreverent young mountain lad... I have stories, and some may even resemble the truth (or not). Hope to hear from you all, signed Dan aka Dangerous Dan McGrew (not my real last name nor a reasonable first name).

Kay: Good guess, Ed is my first cousin. My mother was Anna, Orpha's daughter and my name is Dan. I remember you as a pup when Susie and Sam brought you into their home. Susie was without a doubt my favorite great aunt; she was fun. I had to live with my Grandma Moore after Gramdpa Moore died, and had to live there until I graduated from High School and went off to the military and to college. Grandma Moore was very religous and a stern woman and quite frankly I was a %$&& raiser as a young man, so she and I had many disagreements.

I am still unable to find Great grandfather "Poppy" Holstine's grave at the Brounland Cemetery, must not have a marker...

I remember as a small child going to Aunt Cora's store, I believe it must have been in Hurricane (at least somewhere in Putnam County), she's seemed quite the spry woman as I remember. Of course having a store with candy was not a bad thing for a child to visit either. I also recollect that Susie and Granda Moore had taken me down there on that big trip. (my memory is very good memory). I remember as a three year old, being at Aunt Nola's apartment where and on the night Grandma Holstine died. I also remember an even earlier time being with Granda Holstine and my mother picking mulberries on the hill above Grandma Holstine's home. I can still draw up her (Grandama Holstine) image in my mind if I concentrate hard. My mother loved Grandma Holstine; I believe more than she did her own mom.

Grandma Holstine's home was very humble, quaint, and was actually made out of logs, very rustic but neat. After she died, Uncle Emory's family lived there until they moved to Olcott...I remember all of your cousins, some better than others, i.e. Charlie and Edward (Emory's sons) and I played basketball a lot on the week ends in the mid-70's. I also went all through school with Joe's kids, Donald (he was a bit older than me) Patricia and Sandy. I also remember going to Uncle Howard's home in Alum Creek as a child and his wife, Juanita, gave me a whole watermelon (I guess I liked food). Then they "up and moved" to Indiana when I was very young and the watermelon disappeared. The only one I did not know or meet was uncle Charlie, he was killed before I was born.

I am not much of a telephone talker but I am a very writer. I am somewhat a hermit and outdoorsman. But I do have good computer and research skills. I will be pleased to share any of my stories (there are many and unless I embellish too much, some are even true) about the Holstines that I recollect and try to answer any questions you may have. Your knowledge of the family may be equal or better than mine. Well I hope you are well and that life has been kind to you. I remember you as being a very nice young lady and wish you well. Talk to you soon. Dan.
