The Henry Holt i know of was from Missouri. He married a woman named Jane, and together they had 11 children, 7 whom were still living in the 1910 Census. One daughter was a Harriet Holt, and the other was Cecil Holt, my great grandmother. They lived in Wright County, Missouri. The 1880 census states that Henry Holt, a farmer, aged 33, born in Missouri, living with his wife Jane Holt, aged 19 and born in Indiana. There are some older Holt children in the family who could not possibly have been the children of Jane, so I assume that this was at least a second marriage for Henry.

I have a stray William Holt born circa 1773, living in Macon County, NC in 1840. He's living near several Ledford's who name a lot of their son's William Holt Ledford. Also wondered if you might have your Benjamin and Sarah with daughters? What are their names.

Jack ,

I replied to your AOL account. Should have mentioned that my family is from this line. Benjamin Holt and Sarah Little is as far back have been able to track . However, I know Ambrose was born in Wilkes County and then moved to Russell. The rest is in the e-mail I sent to you .
All of the surnames look very familiar to me. My great grandfather was also born in 1865 in Russell.

Look forward to sharing .
I read your last post and I am wondering if your Great grandfather was Christopher Holt (aka C.C. Holt), born 1865 in Russell County Kentucky. He was married to Gertrude Lawless Holt. He is my Great Grandfather Christopher. His father was John Holt and married Matilda Coffey Holt. John and Matilda were married several years before the Civil War.I have a family picture of GGG John's surviving children, circa Late 1880s. All their Christian names were British sounding, one brother was named Sidney Holt. This is the Benjamin-Ambrose Holt line, from the Yankin Valley, in Wilkes County North Carolina. There were many residents who left Wilkes County after the Revoluntionary War and settled in Adair and Russell Counties, circa Late 1700s and early 1800s. Most of the settlers had Scot-Irish ancestry who came from Wilkes County. Common surnames, Jennings, Days, Baileys, Coffeys, Lawlesses and Harris. If any of these names sound familar, drop me a line and we can discuss in more detail.

Jack M. Holt, Jr.
cholt33433@aol.com

I would like to exchange information with you. I have information which can fill in some of your gaps in information. James Hines Holt, grandson of Simon Holt is buried in the Holt Cemetery in Washington County, Texas. He died in 1854. I have a lot of information on his descendants that was given to me by one of his descendants. Also, Nancy Singleton Holt married Henry Colquitt. Their descendant were well known in Georgia. After Richard Holt I died in 1693, David Holt became the guardian for William and Plunkett Harraway Holt, minors. David Holt resigned as their guardian and Richard Holt II became their guardian. Doris Duke was the daughter of James Buchanan Duke and Nanaline Holt. Nanaline Holt was a descendant of Simon Holt. James Buchanan Duke and Nanaline Holt are buried in the Chapel at Duke University.

You can e-mail me at BHEEvans@worldnet.att.net.

Brian Evans

If anyone is interested, the couple listed in this post of Dorothy Heywood Holt & Robert Holt, are mentioned in a book by Mary Beth Norton called "Founding Mothers & Fathers". Their names are in the index, but on pps. 344-345 there are some court records indicating that Robert Holt & wife Dorothy were having some marital troubles and this was due to Dorothy sleeping with Robert's business partner Edward Hudson, and later there are court documents alluding to the three of these people living in a menage a trois situation... Some interesting history can be derived from this material. I believe I also descend from this Holt Line, via 3 subsequent generations of Richard Holts leading to a Simon Holt who migrated into Georgia at the start of the 19th century.. http://holt.casey-genealogy.com

Take care,
DLC

Jack , Thank you , it is good to know there are some like minded people.
I did have a moment to read your post regarding The Knights Templar. This is a rich story and an extraodinary part of history. Our Holt men were Mason's , I also discovered the DNA matches I have encountered also had father's and grandfather's that were Mason's. A common thread perhaps for a specific line? I do not know.
I agree with you regarding the DNA, we have been placed in a specific " Halpogroup" however ............. other men with the exact same 43 markers have been placed in the same one and some in others. It is confusing to say the least.
My Holt line is from ( and again I would not bet my life on this ) however, my supporting documentation and photos of other DNA matches that do indeed bear a strong resemblance to my great grandfather's generation point to a strong connection . My great grandfather was born in 1865 in Kentucky. His father as well and his grandfather was born in Wilkes County North Carolina, before this Virginia and from there, well........ you read the other post so you know I am a skeptic when it comes to saying anyone is German or English, if this is the case our names are English and none of the German traditions were passed down. But I remain open to any information that can either prove or disprove my thoughts. I did notice that they have Jonas Hold and he is a very close match to Thomas Holt, I am almost 100 % where we fit, but would welcome sharing anything I can . It is refreshing to find someone who is open to the possibility that some of the documentation may not be as accurate as we would like. It has been a great lesson in learning for me . If the Holt's who have the humor end up in my tree, then I am fairly sure this is where they belong! At least I hope so .

"Amen" fellow Holt, for your most recent post. You said it very well. There is a lot of old, not updated family tree information on the net. Usually property tax information (we have always been taxed), marriage licenses, wills, surveys, ship's manifests and the witnesses (nationalities) associated with these documents give a good indication whether the Holts came from the British Isles or Germany. Some Christian surnames can (and I emphasize the word "can") help. Yet, I question the DNA test results in their extensiveness or lack of. It seems like everybody now days is running a DNA lab operation. I think you should use these results with caution. It is a tool just like any other aspect of genealogy research.

I have traced my British Isle Holts back to about 1750 in Virginia and North Carolina, with proper legal records and also their British Isle "in laws," friends and communities. If you have any legal records on the Moravian Colony German Holts expanding out of Virginia in the 1700s, I would be interested in trading information.

Jack Meredith Holt, Jr.

Holt family from the South

There seems to be some confusion with the Holt family. There are men who came over from Germany and England , if these were the countries they started from is in question.

Many many people have family bibles and photographs. They also have diaries. The only true way to know which line you come from is to have a (CLOSE )meaning , brother , first cousin , father etc. do the DNA test. This is the only way to know for sure.
As we all know our ancestors endured many hardships , war, disease and women died given birth more often then we would all like to believe. For this reason ................. I encourage anyone who is doing research ( especially those who are depending on a family Bible from 100-200 years ago, to not be too quick to judge those of us who do have our DNA and have matched to other Holt men.
It is an emotional thing for many . Myself included.

Because many of us who are a DNA match were raised thinking we were English and some German , this needs to be sorted out .
How this can be done I have no idea. We are always pleased to share whatever we can. If someone posts something that is not correct. Please , kindly ( operative word here ) point this out to them and give them the correct information.
We are all trying to have fun and one bad apple ( Lone Star ) can spoil the whole bunch. Our Holt line has DNA, photos , diaries , bibles and lots of men ( they are alive ) . So please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or constructive input. It is always welcomed.
Do not be so myopic that you fail to see what is in front of you .

I have Richard S. Holt and Harriett F. Ellis as having five children named Henretta C., Richard William, George, Almita, and Fanny. I have no information on the parents of Harriett F. Ellis. Richard S. Holt's parents were John Holt of Amelia County, Virginia and Sarah F. "Sally" Clardy. They were married in 1799 in Amelia County, Virginia.

John Holt's parents were Richard Holt and Lucy Phillips. Richard parents were another Richard Holt and Mary (Last Name Unknown) Richard Holt's parents were Plunkett Harraway Holt and Elizabeth (Last Name Unknown). Plunkett's parents were Richard Holt and Margaret Plunkett. Richard's parents were Robert Holt and Dorothy Heywood of St. Mary's, Maryland and Rochdale, Lancashire, England.

Sadly, I have five Joseph Holts in my index which I have no further information. I have not birth date or wives for any of them. The other Joseph Holts in my index either have different middle initials or names or they have different birth dates. Also, I have no Dale Holts in my index.

HELP! I just found out that my maiden name is really not Spence. I have started research on my dad's side of the family and finally located the names of my 3rd great grandfather's mother and father. My 3rd great's name was Charles that married Rachel Davis. We have all the documentation on that per the family bible and archives. His father's name was Alexander Spence, so we thought. It looks like Alexander's name was Holt and his mother's name was Elizabeth (Betty) Holt. She married James Spence, Sr. in 1769 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her son Alexander to the Spence name when they married. I am trying to find out if Holt is a maiden name for Elizabeth or if it is a married name for her. I would like to know after 60 years what my real maiden name is.
They lived in Sussex County Delaware around Northwest Fork Hundred.
Thanks, Marilyn.....please feel free to email me at teacheriam@verizon.net

Hi,

I already sent you a reply for a different post, but as I find more info from you I am sure that this is the same family. I have that James Newton Holt was born July 2 1846 in Springfield Missouri, he died in 1913 and is buried in Palestine Cemetery, Relief Township Arkansa near Batesville. His wife was Sarah J. Mosier who was born Aug 16 1875 in Marion County Arkansa, she died in May of 1954 in Willits California, their children include Ruth, Douglas (great grandfather) Ray, Icie, Katie, and Nola. Lets share our info, Alana

I see on several public member tree gedcoms that the rumor is that this Elijah Holt was married to Elizabeth Minerva Holt. NOT TRUE. He was married to Jane. I have very carefully researched and documented my family for years. I own the family Bible. I shared information with a person on the promise that she would keep it confidential at this time, and now has done everyone a terrible injustice to the Holt family in inputting the information incorrectly not only on Elijah and Jane, but others as well. Please correct your gedcoms.

You can see groupings of people who match.

If you are interested in participating check out
www.familytreedna.com. I just did the 12 marker test...which I got via national geographic genome project and later I decided to share the results...which is how my data got to familytreedna.com

I am hoping that someday...I can find the English link and also prove the papertrail link to Nicholas Holt
sorry for taking so long

Keryl, has any male Holt in your family done the Ychrom. DNA test by any chance? I am trying to determine where my Holt (Nicholas Holt) who came over to New England around 1634... was actually from.

It would be interesting to see if your family connects with one of the 5 or so different Holt branches in the US.

If you have family interested in pursuing the dna thing...check out www.holtfamilydnaproject.com for how a number of us compare or www.familytreedna.com to get a test.
If we can get more UK Holts involved... we might figure out how we all tie together...or not
Thanks

Mary Carter's father was Nathan... it appears she may have been widowed...lists her name as Mary Eaton..says she is from Wilmington and Joseph from Reading.

If over the years you haven't found more...let me know and I will check more to see the rest of the tree... but this is the Nicholas Holt tree

My Holts came via Mass. to NH to Maine... to Minnesota.
I had hoped to get around to going to cemeteries etc... but didn't get around to it. Ironically I have no children... got into the genealogy thing because my parents misplaced their files.... so in recreating the info... I got hooked.

I have interviewed my parents to get their stories... it is a good thing you have been proactive in recording your info. I wish my husband had done the same with his family.

Which Holt line are you connected to?

Yes, Ed I know... but they only go back to the mid 1700s... not sure how Nicholas links in. There doesnt appear to be any new additions since late '08... I was hoping to get more people involved... particularly from Lancashire...in the hopes of finding people who can go back earlier... in the hopes of finding how Nicholas links in.

Thank though...
I am related to Nicholas Holt of Andover Mass. He came over from England in 1634. My father's Y chromasome ancestry is linked to another Holt family from Lancashire. Unfortunately they only can trace their family back to the 1700s.

I am trying to figure out where Nicholas's descendants are from... and am hoping that more Holts who trace their ancestry from Holts in the Lancashire area have or will do the y chromosome DNA testing.

It would be great if we could link up the Holts from New England to Holts in the UK.

My GGG Grandfather is Charles Holt b.1762 in Prince William County, VA. Using DNA I have connected to John Holt who appears in Granville Co. NC on Tax rolls as early as 1764 with Charles living nearby in the NC 1786 census. Here I am stymied since I can't locate John earlier than Charles' birth in VA. I am beginning to think that this John Holt is my immigrant ancestor from the UK.

Pepperdog, if you will look at our Holt Surname Project membership results we have a member living in the UK who's DNA is close enough to some of our Nicholas members to say that there is a relationship. Check on member 63919.
Ed

No, I have given it up because of some health problems and a need to get some other things in my life back on an even keel. Mimi has finally taken it over and I am just standing by in case she runs into a problem. I also
haven't worked on my own genealogical research in ages.
I just got through writing a 65 page autobiography for my kids and grandkids. I based it on the "42" different addresses that I have had in my 79 years trying to let my descendants know what my lifetime has been like. In May my present wife and I drove through the Midwest gathering pictures up there of the many towns, houses, and schools I lived in, and attended as well as the churches that my dad served. This was her first trip into that area. We drove 4,000 miles in the last 2 weeks of May and first week of
June.
Ed
