1. Hans Jacob Holtzclaw's parents were Hans Henrich Holtzclaw and Gertrud ?. Some say that Gertrud's maiden name was Solbach but I have seen no proof of that in the German church records. Hans Jacob's first wife is correct as you have it listed. His second wife was Catherine ? (surname unknown). His two eldest children were born and baptized in Germany (Johannes/John and Hans Heinrich/Henry).
2. Archibald Holtzclaw was a son of Joseph Holtzclaw and Catherine James and a great-grandson of Hans Jacob. I have seven children listed for him.
3. Benjamin Holtzclaw was a son of Johannes/John Holtzclaw and Catherine Russell (widow of a Thomas) and was married to Catherine Melinda Russell. I don't know if there is a connection between the two Catherines or not. I have the following children listed for Benjamin and Catherine-Hosea, Catherine, Mary, Jemima, Sallie, Elizabeth, Amos, Abner, Josiah, Benjamin and Martin.
4. Joseph was a son of Hans Jacob Holtzclaw and his second wife Catherine. Elizabeth Zimmerman was his second wife. Mary Thomas was his first. I haven't researched the children of Reuben and Jemima so I can't help there.
5. I have no information that would indicate that Mary G. was born in the VA colony. Culpeper wasn't established as a county until 17 May 1749. I am aware of only one child for Mary and her husband John; his name was Jacob. There is a very extensive chancery suit involving this family in Fauquier County in 1759. Others state there were other children but I haven't seen the documents to support this yet, so I don't know.
A number of books have been written about these families and published by The Germanna Foundation. Unfortunately, most of these books are lacking proper and complete documentation so it is very difficult to determine the accuracy of the information presented. I have found it best to consult the original records and draw my own conclusions.

I know this is an old thread but I am curious about what you may have come across.
My grandma and grandpa Holtzclaw were in Smithville, Mo - Clay County. They are both deceased but they had four children and out of all the grandchildren there was only one boy. He had sons though so we still have some Holtzclaws in the line.
Anyhow, what I found most interesting about this particular thread was the combinations of surnames. I am pretty sure my grandma's maiden name was kilgore. She was Mary Frances and went by Polly, He was James Demond and went by JD.
I will see if my aunt has any family history info. but I am quite curious what you have come across. I haven't really gotten into geneology but got online looking for a copy of the book that my grandma used to have.

I have run into a woman named Frances Holtzclaw (born abt 1779) and I seem to have two sets of parents for her. Some say her parents were Jacob Holtzclaw and Milly Dodson, but others say it was Jacobs BROTHER, Nathaniel Holtzclaw and his wife Isa Gibson. I really am not sure which one to believe, but maybe you guys know. My theory is that people who say it was Nathaniel, because he served in the Revolutionary War, and for some reason that's a big deal.

Re: Nancy Holtzclaw

My grandfather was Major Jack Davis b. in Shelby, AL in 1865. He had a brother named Holtzclaw Davis, who died young in Wichita Co, TX. The families of William Henry Davis and his oldest son Francis Marion Davis had moved from Shelby, AL to Wichita Co, TX shortly about 1867. William Davis was born about 1811 in Abbeyville Dist, SC (tombstone) and his age would fit him into the Leach m. Holtzclaw family. There is a marriage record of a Ruben Davis (unknown to me) who married the daughter of Ann/Nancy Holtzclaw Leach in 1808. This would be a perfect fit for me, but I have not been able to locate the Leach family in census records. Did they go to KY or SC or GA? I am also searching for Warren Davis, possible father of William Henry, who is reported to be from GA, county unknown. I would love to share research with you. Please reply also to me directly at seiter01@charter.net. Thanks, Linda

Re: Elizabeth Ann Holtzclaw / John L. Duncan

Hi Patricia:
I have a Blanch Duncan, b. 1810, who married Catherine Reed. Blanch is the son of John & Rhoda Duncan, John is the son of John L. Duncan & Elizabeth Ann Holtzclaw. My mother was Susan Reid, daughter of James Reid & Elsie Meadows....my grandfather spelled it Reid. Everyone from my Gr-Grandfather, Eli, back spell it Reed... We have Morricle, Duncan, Altizer, & Reed in our ancestry, but to my knowledge, no Shelbourne, Weaver, or Burnette. Do you have "Akers"? All of my Reed relatives are from Floyd County. We are definitely cousins. You are the first Holtzclaw connection I have made on the I-Net. My research shows John L. Duncan born in Scotland & Elizabeth Holtzclaw born in Germany.....do you know if this is correct? I was born in West Virginia, lived most of my life in Washington, DC & now I live in Fort Lauderdale.

There is one white male over the age of 16, two white males under the age of 16, and two white females enumerated. Has anyone researched this Henry to see where and/or if he connects into the Holtzclaw family of Virginia and South Carolina?

I have been researching Holtzclaws about 12 years and have read many of the early church records in what is now Germany. I have found variant spellings such as Holtsclaw, Holdsclaw, Holsclaw, Hottsdaw, etc.

Thank you for the reference to the real estate file. I have searched a number of records in Spartanburg County but not that particular one. The George Holtzclaw estate mentioned is the George Holtzclaw, son of Stephen Holtzclaw and brother of Ethel, right?
The children that I have so far for Mary McCravy are Hannah, Sara, Mary and Nellie. Interesting that George W. Holtzclaw, son of Ethel, was named guardian ad litem. George W. is my greatuncle; he was a much older brother of my greatgrandfather, J. D. Holtzclaw.
Also in my notes, John Quincy McCravy married Mary Holtzclaw first and after her death married Emily Fredonia.
I have no further information about Eliza Jane, sister of George R. Holtzclaw. I have some further information about George Rutherford Holtzclaw and descendants that I have gathered from death records and obituaries.

Does this match your information? Since I posted this request in 2002, I have found more information but still don't have much information about George's father other than his name, William S.
I have an Emily Holtzclaw also. Mine married John Mitchell in Wilkes CO, GA in 1817. John later moved to Clay Co, AL and had two more wives after her death. This Emily also had a daughter named Emily who married Sanford Gravette.

Who are the parents of this Emily marrying in 1817?
