Deb, was wondering if you would please share a copy of his obituary with me in an email? Might you also have one for his spouse, Sara Mae Kibel? She was my second cousin a couple of times removed. I have been researching the "Kibel" family for some years.

Hi again. I decided to finish up my thoughts for this morning, and I tried to summarize what Suzanne said. IF I have not understood the information correctly, please let me know.

This is a brief summary of Suzanne's 2nd posting - of probable line of HOMERs:

Possible grandparents:
Richard HOLMER, b1606, and Margaret WRIGHT in ENGLAND
Unknown son..
Grandson:
Edward HOMER b16? and Elizabeth WILKES,
m. 1628 (He d1681; she d1685 ENGLAND)
Edward (III?) HOMER, b1634 and Anne GIBBINS
John HOMER (1665-1717) and Margery STEPHENS
m. 1693 (She d.1762)
Michael HOMER and Sarah KNEELAND
Jacob HOMER
Eleazer HOMER, b1761

This is the Eleazer mentioned in this posting who married Mary BARTLETT (b1770). Their first 2 sons were Jacob HOMER, b1787, and Eleazer HOMER, b1789, and then 3 daughters, and then another Eleazer, b1796, and then 7 more children. All in Boston. MA.

I am descended from Jacob HOMER (Capt.), b1787, who married Elizabeth LORING in 1816. They had one child, Betsey HOMER, who married into the HUTCHINSON family of (now) Winchester, MA. I am descended from their son, Jacob Homer HUTCHINSON. (The HOMER name continued as a middle name to a son and grandson.) (And the LORING name continued on. A great-grandson was named Leslie Loring HUTCHINSON. In the first half of the 1900's he was a Podiatrist in Cambridge, MA, and was known as Dr. L. Loring HUTCHINSON.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hi Suzanne. I'm just finding your posting from 2003, and I want to thank you very much for posting the information. (and from the 2nd message).

I am descended from Jacob HOMER (Capt.) who married Elizabeth LORING. They had a daughter, Betsey HOMER, but Jacob "died at sea" either while his wife was pregnant or shortly after his daughter's birth. I'm saying this from memory, so I'll have to find the details later.

I posted a query about this couple in Feb. 2009.

I just printed out your 2 messages, and I will organize the information in my mind later in the morning.

In my Feb. posting, there is additional information about Elizabeth's 2 more marriages, and more children from the 2 marriages.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hi John. I don't research my HOMER ancestors very often. But, I decided to look in the archives of this Board this morning. And I just found your posting from 10 years ago. I noticed no one responded about your GLEASON question. I have the "history of Billerica" and just looked up your Sarah.

There is a short paragraph on GLEASON in the Genealogy part of the book. It starts out with:

Thomas GLEASON, of Watertown, Cambridge, and 1662 of Charlestown. He m. Susannah ______, and they had Thomas, Joseph, and John, who lived in Sudbury; Mary, b in Cambridge in 1657, and prob. Isaac, etc. This short paragraph is hard to understand. I think it says after Isaac was William. .. William married Abiah _____ and they had a child in 1687. Then? Joseph, John, and Elizabeth and in 1690 Isaac. Isaac m. Mary LIVERMORE, of Watertown, and lived in Sudbury, and they had a son, Isaac, who was the father of .. William, 1. .....

William, 1: The name first appears on the tax-list of 1754. He leased the College Farm and later purchased it. It remained the family home until 1850, when he moved to the Center. William m. Mary SEGER, who d. 1776; he m. secondly, 1780, Mary, widow of James GOSS. She d. 1817, and he d. 1818, age 88. CH: William, b1756, Mary, b1758, Hannah, b1760, William, b1763, Rebecca, b1765, Joseph, b1768, Ruth, b1770, Sarah, b1772, Lucy, b1776, Lucy, b1782. ... Sarah m. 1801 William HOMER, Boston, and had: William, Lucy, Augustus, Aaron, and Francis.

NOTE to others; this is a family to make note of:

William and Sarah (GLEASON) HOMER of Boston?, who had children: William, Lucy, Augustus, Aaron and Francis HOMER during very early 1800's. But, the previous message says that the father, William, was born in England !

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(Researching: Capt.

Hi again. I forgot to say that Capt. Jacob HOMER reportedly died at sea ~1786. I believe it was while his wife was pregnant with their daughter, Betsey. Or he died shortly after her birth. Betsey was born in 1786 in West Cambridge, MA (now Arlington). So, there were no additional children for Jacob HOMER and Elizabeth LORING.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

FYI:
The widow, Mrs. Elizabeth HOMER, remarried to John WINNECK and had 4 more children. They divorced ~1802. She then remarried to Jeduthan WELLINGTON and 4 more children. They lived in a large home in Belmont, MA.

(Because of "his" children, "her" children, and "their" children, there were probably close to 20 children in that home in the early 1800's.)

Families in Boston or Cambridge, MA, 1700's

Hello. Someone has gotten me thinking about my ancestors, Thomas HUTCHINSON and "Betsey" HOMER, who married in West Cambridge, MA, in ~1813. I have been researching the HUTCHINSON family for 15+ years, based on notes of that family ~1900. But, the HOMER ancestors are a mystery.

Betsey's parents were (Capt.) Jacob HOMER (b~1760 MA) and Elizabeth LORING (b~1766 MA). This month I have found out that there is at least one "LORING book," and Elizabeth seems to be the daughter of David LORING and Elizabeth FAIRSERVICE. (David descended from Thomas.)

But, I've been searching on-line this morning, and I'm not finding information on Jacob's parents. Does anyone know who his parents were?

I did find on-line that there was a Jacob HOMER born later in the 1770's in Boston, MA (?). There is a posting about him on-line.

Were there 2 HOMER families in the early 1700's? Or, was there one family with several HOMER sons?

Thank you for your time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Elizabeth Barrett Homer married Thomas Poole on February 25, 1828 (according to records taken from the Nathaniel Homer Family tree). Thomas Poole died on September 28, 1860 in Philadelphia, Pa and was buried on September 30, 1860 in Glenwood Cemetery. Elizabeth Barrett (Homer) Poole died on July 4, 1887 and was buried on July 8, 1887 in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Benjamin Homer died sometime before June 27, 1861 and was buried on that date in Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia. His wife, Elizabet Barret died on June 1, 1845 and was buried on June 6, 1845 in Monument Cemetery.

Benjamin was the son of Nathaniel Homer and Sarah Davis. He had several siblings. After Sarah Davis died, Nathaniel married Amelia Cresswell and had several more children including my ancestor Mathias Homer. If you need any more information, feel free to contact me.

Hello Jane,

We had the opportunity to share information several years ago. It's nice to be in touch again.

James Homer and my ancestor, Mathias, were brothers. Mathias was a founder and first Burgess of Merchantville, New Jersey and was instrumental in the formation of several Merchantville institutions, including Trinity Chapel which was a Presbyterian Church. I have not seen any connection with the Unitarian Church, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't one. It is rather interesting that James and Eliza aren't buried in the Unitarian Church yard, isn't it?

Fran

All I have on Sarah Davis is that she died about 1794 in England (Birmingham?) because Nathaniel came to America with his second wife, Amelia, around 1832. He and Amelia had six children. He is said to have had four children with Sarah Davis, Benjamin being the eldest.

Nathaniel is said to be the son of Samuel Homer and Elizabeth Read. Samuel and Elizabeth were married on June 4, 1759 in Birmingham, Worcestershire, England. (Source: Letter to American Consular Service written by William R. Hood, November 23, 1929, describing marriage certificate # 127, Rowley Regis Vicarage, Birmingham, England). I have not personally seen this source, but received it with information passed to me by another Homer researcher. I have found their research to be sound and reliable so I don't doubt that the information is accurate.

The only information I have on Elizabeth Barrett is that she was born (according to the previously mentioned family tree) on November 11, 1785 in England. I do have some information on Benjamin and Elizabeth's children. Benjamin's will shows that he remarried after the death of Elizabeth. His second wife's name was Hannah, but we haven't been able to determine her surname.

Have you come across any connection between this line of Homers and those found in the Boston area, in particular, Winslow Homer, the famous painter? My grandmother claims that there was a connection but I have not been able to find it.

Fran

The Thomas, Charles, and Albert Homer you asked about came from Iowa in about 1891-2; they came to Craig County Oklahoma and settles in township 2. Their mother was Sarah Lane, second wife of Benjamin T Homer. Benjamin died in late 1890's. Sisters, Gertrude and Grace also came to OK. Benjamin and first wife lived in Gallands Grove, Iowa. First wife, Patience, died and is buried in Gallands Grove. Benjamin, Sarah, Tom, and Albert are buried in Edna, Kansas (just across the border from home in OK). Charles is buried in a Craig OK cemetery. Tom married a Sarah; I don't know where she is buried. Albert was divorced from Mary. I have more info if you are still interested. J Jones

Re: Looking for Stalybridge Homers

although I am a ´Homer´I doubt I am related - my family came from Aston, Birmingham (England).
But when I read your email I thought you may be interested in the Lancashire Births Marriages and Deaths website - it is very detailed and may help your search around Staleybridge.
good luck Pat
Nathaniel & James Homer - Birmingham England

Can anyone help me track down Nathaniel's first marriage? He was born about 1790, to James, a button maker & ?, and married at least three times. He was a bookseller. I have the names of wives 2 & 3 but I am descended from his son James who must have been the issue of the first marriage but cannot establish who James' mother was. He was born in Birmingham & married an Elizabeth Allen.

On the IGI there is a marriage of a Frances Ashby to a Nathaniel Homer in Leicester in December 1808 but I cannot prove the link either way.

Any help appreciated!

Benjamin & Sarah Ann Homer

This is in hopes James_Hopkinsmbe reads this. I am a decendant of Albert Victor Ernest Homer (b 1885). I have just stumbled upon your family tree. Mary Elizabeth Homer was the sister of Albert Homer. You have him down as Ernest Homer. I don't have a lot of information yet. Sarah Ann Dawes and Benjamin Homer were his parents. If you get this let me know. Any info exchanged would be great. Thanks
