HOPE RELATIVES EMIGRATED FROM UK 1967 - 1970

My cousin Ann and her new husband Philip emigrated to Australia between about 1967 and 1970 (possibly Berkley Vale NSW). Ann and Philip had two children (names unknown), and my Father visited them as a family in Australia but has forgotten where they lived at the time. These children (1 boy 1 girl?) would be about 30+ years now, probably with families of their own. I would dearly love to know something about them and what happened to them after their mothers' early death in 1979. According to records I believe Ann to have a gravestone at Point Clare Cemetery, but other than that am stuck. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi Everyone,

I'm desperately looking for any information on John and Sarah and their children. I believe that they reached New York in 1850, and I believe that their son John Hope is my gggrandfather. I'm trying to find any references to what they did after reaching America, or any records that can help me go beyond their generation.

I have years of birth as 1806 for John, and 1807 for Sarah. Their children were Mary, Ellen, John, Elizabeth, James, and Sarah.

Thanks,
Kevin Hope
Martha Jane Fodrill (Nelson) from Patrick County, Virginia

I have been searching for so long, and have had no results in finding anyone else with the name Fodrill in Patrick County, Virginia, even though the records show she was born in Patrick County, Virginia. Martha Jane was 1/2 Sioux and 1/2 White. I found her living with Thomas Lambert and his wife, Melanie Lambert when she was 8 years old on the 1860 Census. They had Melanie Lambert's father, Isaac Thompson, born 11/17/1774 in Maryland, living with them and their children, Lucinda Lambert, born 1849, Columbus F. Lambert, born 1843, and Martha Fodrill, my Great-Grandmother, who had initially been listed by her married name on the Census Record, as Martha Jane Nelson, in the 1850 Census. She and her husband, my Great-Grandfather, moved to Wilkes Militia #165, sometime before 1870, and already had an 8-year old child, Mary Ellen, John Henry Nelson, 5, Sarah Frances Nelson, age 3, and an un-named infant, who is Martha Jane, 7 months old. If anyone could tell me something about my ancestor's name, kindly let me know.

No genealogist in the past 20 +/- years has found any link between the Quaker Hopes and the Presbyterian Hopes in Chester County PA. All evidence actually supports that they were two completely seperate and unrelated faamilies.

Below is a Chronology that I did several years ago of all documentation on Hope surnamed persons in and around Cester County, you will notice there is a distict seperate path for the Quakers and Presbyterians and that they co-existed in Chester County for decades.

=====================================================

Original: 18 July 2002
Revised: 8 October 2011

HOPE CHRONOLOGIES Chester County Pennsylvania
1685 - 1791

This is an attempt to set the record of the “Hope” surnamed persons in Chester County Pennsylvania out in a logical order so as to facilitate the research of these persons.

Transcribed by Richard Hope 18 July 2002 from several reference documents. This document is as accurate as I can make it, however it is not perfect, in many cases I am relying on work done by previous persons who are unknown to me and I do not know how accurate their work was. Also, it is possible that I have not transcribed everything perfectly. I have tried to leave all spelling, sentence structure, punctuation as originally written.

•	1685: Thomas Hopes and John Hopes arrive onboard Unicorne from Bristoll 12/16/1685,
•	1690: Chester County Court record; Nicolass Piles delivered a deed in oppen court unto Thomas Hope for one hundred acres of land lying in Thornbery, dtd thirthyeth day of the ninth month one thousand six hundred and ninety,
•	1693: Chester County Court record; Thomas Hoape, bound over R.E. wheither Mary Matin was with childe by Thomas Hoape.
Re: Thomas Hope 1701-1777

I have been studying the abstracts of wills from Chester County PA in regards to the Hope family. I noticed that in John Hope's will from 1749 he leaves "To son Thomas, 250 acres whereon he now dwells being part of a tract my brother Thomas Hope left me by will."

I'm thinking that the Thomas Hope who was married to Elizabeth and who died in 1708, was the brother of John Hope who died forty-one years later. Thomas' will mentions leaving his brother John land and then John's will specifies that the land he is leaving to his son Thomas was willed originally to him by his brother, Thomas Hope. This would indicate that Thomas of 1708 died fairly early in life which would help to explain why he did not list any children in his will.

Further, I believe that the Thomas of Sadsbury who died in 1777 was the son to whom this land was left by John Hope in 1749.

Does this fit with any of your records or DNA testing?

James Edward "Jim" Hope 1934-2012 Bellville, Ohio

James Edward "Jim" Hope

BELLVILLE, Ohio: It's not that Jim Hope ever sought out the hard way through life - the hard way through life just found him. An early bout with polio left him with one leg shorter than the other. A bonfire accident once left him badly burned. And then there was the time when he jumped on a pitchfork. When life gave Jim Hope lemons - he made lemonade.

" 'Can't' died in the poor house" he'd tell his kids, a glimpse into the work ethic of man who never allowed himself to fall victim to his circumstances, even when the odds were against him. "You're not sick unless you can't walk" he'd tell them…words from a man who knew sickness.

A man remembered for his loyalty, work ethic and sense of humor, Jim passed away Sunday morning August 12, 2012, in the home he built, on the hill he loved, on the property of his birth. He was 77.

Born James Edward Hope October 11, 1934 to Irvin and Gertrude (Winegar) Hope, Jim was a 1952 graduate of Bellville High School, the vice-president of his senior class.

On March 5, 1952 he married his childhood sweetheart Janet Sue Snyder in Janet's family home: the former Snyder Funeral Home. They recently celebrated 60 years of love, commitment and devotion together.

Jim started his career working in the lumber yard of Home Materials, and later worked at National Seating before accepting a position with Gorman Rupp. He served Gorman Rupp 35 years, was active with the Quarter Century Club, and retired in April 1998 from the engineering department.

He was instrumental in founding the Bellville Youth Baseball League, and building the Bellville baseball fields. He and Janet even ran the concessions at the youth fields for years.

An avid lifelong camper, he'd whine and growl about packing up to head to Florida - they wintered in Ft. Myers, Florida for ten years - because it took him off "his hill."

Whenever he was away, he longed to go home to his hill, to cut wood, to sit with family and friends and tell jokes, or to just drink-in the scenery of his lifelong property.

He is survived by his wife Janet Hope; their children Debra & Robert Robinson of Bellville, Connie & Robert Pore of Butler, Ohio and William & Karen Hope of Bellville, OH; grandchildren Denise & Benji Bethea of Bellville, Brett Banbury of Mansfield, Ohio, Jeff & Debbie Robinson of Fredericktown, Ohio, Tracey Sheriff of Butler, Ohio, Randy & Deanna Pore of Butler, Kevin Pore of Westerville, Greg Pore of Butler, Christopher & Jill Hope of Fredericktown, Ohio, Angie Hope of Lexington, OH and Allison & Christopher Walker of Beaver Creek, OH; 12 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; brothers and a sister-in-law Jack & Patricia Hope of Hillsboro, Ohio and Robert Hope of Roanoke, VA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Robert & Dorothy Snyder of Canon City, CO, Betty & Bill Ritchie of Tucson, AZ, Helen Snyder of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Gifta Snyder of Bellville, Madelyn Snyder of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, T. Arthur & Joyce Snyder of Mansfield, J. Paul Snyder of Bellville, Patricia & Larry Hoffman of Colorado Springs, CO, and James & Pat Snyder of Bellville; nieces, nephews and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his sister Faith Ann Pickens.

The Hope family will receive friends Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home.
A celebration of his loyalty, work ethic and sense of humor will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Pastor Joel Warner will officiate. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.

Contributions in Jim's memory to Clear Fork Athletic Boosters or Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad may be made at the funeral home.

Private condolences to the Hope family may be made online at: www.snyderfuneralhomes.com

Richland

Hi

I can give a quite round-about link. Not sure if it's the one you're looking for. It goes like this (and all the people mentioned below came from the villages around Bishop Auckland) :

Benson Abbot (1843 - 1927) married Phillis Hope (1842 - 1919).

Their grandson, Richard Abbot married Annie Sarah Makinson in about 1911.

Annie Sarah Makinson had a sister, Dora, b 1880 who emigrated from England to South Africa just after the Boer War to marry (Tommy?) Foster who had gone from England to fight in the Boer War and had decided to stay in South Africa.

If you would like any more details, please let me know.

Sue Wessels (born Abbot)

Hi Everyone,

This is a bit of a repost, as I'm trying to get back on track with my research. Originally posted about two years ago, with no luck:

I'm looking for any information on John and Sarah and their children.

Thanks,
Kevin Hope

HOPE (ENGLAND/NYC) AND BURNS (SCOTLAND/NYC)

I'm trying to figure out how the Hope Family that Immigrated about 1800 from England is related to the Burns family that started to immigrate from Scotland late 1840's. My great grandfather was born Thomas Hope Burns in NYC 20 Dec 1874 to Scottish parents. There is also a Thomas Hope Burns that was born in 14 Jun 1892 in NYC to Scottish parents. I think both of these Thomas Hope Burns are somehow related to the Hope family of England as Thomas Hope Burns doesn't seem to be a very common name.

I'm missing a few links between these families and am hoping some one that has reasearching these families can fill in some of the details.

I have found several instances of family members of Thomas Hope Burns DOB 1892 living with a Thomas Hope Boat Pilot born about 1800.

In 1850 census Thomas Hope, boat pilot age 50 is living with Elizabeth Burns of Scottland (dob about 1823). Elizabeth Burns is Aunt of of Thomas Hope Burns (born 1892). Elizabeth would always use the name Burns in the US census until 1900 when she was going by the name Elizabeth Hope. I don't believe she was ever married to Thomas Hope but I suspect she might have married one of his cousins or nephews. Many Hope family members were boat pilots or port wardens. Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1874) would spend most of his life working as cook or deckhand on boats in New York harbor. The Thomas Hope Burns born in 1892 would become an auto mechanic.

In 1860 Thomas Hope is running a hotel on 206 E 125th ST. He appears to have a wife now named Mary (not sure if Mary is a Burns or not). Also living in the hotel is a Mary Burns of Scotland who is grandmother to Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892) and Alice Burns who is the Aunt to Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892)

From census records it appears Mary Burns has at least two other sons from Scottland living in New York. She may have other Burns children living in NYC that I'm unaware of. The chidlren I know of are William a printer and Thomas Burns (DOB 1840). I think the Thomas Burns DOB 1840 could be the father of Thomas Hope Burns (DOB 1892). I'm fairly certain my great grandfather Thomas Hope Burns DOB 1874 is not the father of Thomas Hope Burns (DOB 1892)

In the 1910-1920 census Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892) is living with Aunts Elisabeth Hope or Alice Burns (never married). His parents likely died when he was young.

I'm hoping someone knows how the Hope and Burns families are related. Burns is a very common name in NYC but Hope is less common. There is another Hope merchant family of Scottish orgin in NYC during this time frame but they don't seem related at all to the Scotish Burns.

Some of the information i'm looking for is:

How did the Burns family of Scottland come to be associated with the Hope family of England in NYC?

When did Thomas Hope, pilot and innkeeper die?

What was the maiden name of the Mary that was living with him when he ran the inn in 1860?

Elizabeth Burns was single most of her life, which member of the Hope Family did she marry after 1880 and when did her Hope husband die?

Who are the parents of Thomas Hope Burns (dob 1892)?

Dave

Strusty,
Are you a descendant from Ben and Prudie? I have a bunch of photos you might be able to help identify if you are. I inherited them from my mom, as well as have copies she gave to my niece before she passed away; she was a daughter of Carl. I started one blog on the family but messed it up and am starting another. I'm going to be posting every picture I have of the deceased individuals. There are so many I can't identify though. By the way, the parents of Thomas are John Hope and Elizabeth Richards. Between myself and another cousin we can fill in some blanks. And Dillie was born in Kansas by a second wife of Thomas.
